Have A Healthy Trick-Or-Treat Experience

Are you as excited about Halloween as I am? I'm ready to take the younger kids trick-or-treating and maybe go to a couple haunted houses. Going through the treats and sorting out all the goodies is part of the fun. But common sense should still come into play and healthy eating habits should still be followed, even during this time.

Nutritionist and registered dietician Mary Gocke from the Center for Health and Healing in New York warns against feeding kids too much candy as overconsumption of sugar can lead to decreased immune function, mood swings, anxiety, depression and fatigue. Mary suggests the following tips for parents to make sure their kids enjoy Halloween without suffering from the effects of too much sugar:

· Have a Big Dinner – Make sure your kids have a healthy dinner before going out trick or treating. Being full means they’ll be less likely to gorge on candy later that night.

· Nuts and Cheese – Keeping tasty treats such as almonds and string cheese handy and make sure your kids snack on these low-glycemic foods throughout the night; It'll help lower their blood sugar.

· Drink water – Water not only helps wash away the sugar from the teeth and help avoid cavities, but it also helps combat blood sugar levels.

· Avoid sticky candies – These sweets linger longer on your teeth and increase the risk for cavities.

· Try these instead! - Plain chocolate bars (especially if they contain at least 65% cocoa), Sweet Tarts, Smarties and Pixy Sticks are better for your teeth.

What tips do you have for a healthy trick-or-treat experience?

Alexa's Angels - Review and Giveaway

Alexa's Angels is a jewelry and accessories company that conveys positivity, inspiration, and meaningful messages through its products. Each item has meaning behind it.

With negativity surrounding us in all facets of life, it's important to remind ourselves that the world is full of good people and hope. It's also vital to let others know their special roles in our lives. Self-esteem, respect, manners, and compassion for others doesn't have to be a lost art. My children are not "angels" by any means, but I want to feel complete with my life in knowing that I raised them to be good citizens of the world.

What I like about Alexa's Angels is the message the company conveys. Their jewelry and accessories are gorgeous, affordable, and supportive of all things good. They want people to know they are loved and want people to help spread the love.

The posi+ivi+ty bracelet set I received included three black stretch nylon bracelets with the "posi+ivi+ty" reminder. The reason for having three is so you can keep one and pass the other two on to friends, loved ones, or strangers.

Myself, along with my two teenage daughters, wear a bracelet on our wrists everyday to remind ourselves to think and act positively. We've all had people ask about our bracelets and the message it represents. It opens up conversation on spreading a positive attitude. The bracelets stretch to fit on your wrist and they fit each one of us perfectly.

If you were to purchase a posi+ivi+y bracelet set or anything from the posi+ivi+y collection, five percent of your total purchase would be donated to a charity. You'd get the decision to have that donation go to Gift For Life, Girl Scouts of Colorado, or Realities For Children.

Christmas In Canaan - DVD Review and Giveaway

Synopsis:

Released on DVD on October 5th by Vivendi Entertainment and RHI Entertainment, Christmas in Canaan is about an unlikely friendship that blossoms between two 10-year old boys from different backgrounds in the racially charged backdrop of rural Texas, 1964.

Widower, Daniel Burton (Billy Ray Cyrus) is doing his best to raise his three children without prejudice. Despite all his efforts, his 10-year old son, DJ (Zak Ludwig) has made an enemy of his classmate, Rodney (Jaishon Fisher) simply because Rodney is black. In an attempt to remedy the situation, Daniel, along with Rodney's grandmother Miss Eunice (Candus Churchill) decide to force the boys to spend time together. It is then that the two kindred spirits learn about compassion and overcome racial tensions, forming a lifelong bond. Amid the spirit of Christmas, the boys experience the gift of friendship, the power of hope, and the true meaning of family. Christmas In Canaan is based on the book co-written by Grammy Award winner Kenny Rogers.

My Review:

In less than two short months Christmas will be here. One thing that my family enjoys doing to get in the spirit is watch Christmas and holiday movies. Christmas In Canaan is a holiday movie, but it's much more than that. It's a story of struggle, friendship, compassion, and family ties.

Don't hate me all you country music fans, but I never was a fan of Billy Cyrus' music. It's not him personally; I'm just not a lover of that music genre. With that said, I do like his acting abilities. He plays the role of the father in this movie with great conviction.

The movie shows racial prejudices, which opened up conversation between me and the kids about tolerance and things that happened during that time period. There are some scenes in this movie where you'll want to have your Kleenex handy. Christmas In Canaan will pull at your heartstrings, put you in the holiday mood, and remind you that color is only skin deep.

Keepin' Company Thursdays - Week 21

Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore. It's been waaaaay windy in my neck of the woods lately. I'm hoping the weather is a little nicer for Halloween festivities this weekend.

I've come across my first review product that I don't feel I can write anything positive about. I've never had this happen before. There's been cons to some products I've reviewed, but I simply can't find anything positive about this one. I'm supposed to do a review and giveaway for this particular product and cannot, with a clear conscience, recommend it in any way, shape, or form to my readers. For review bloggers who have come across this situation, how did you handle it with the company?

Photobucket>

Now on to Keepin' Company Thursdays. If you'd like to participate, please follow these guidelines:

* Create a Keepin' Company Thursday post. Please include the Keepin' Company Button in your post.

* Follow the first two blogs, which are the hostesses: Heck of a Bunch and Traci66.

* Follow any of the other blogs you choose to and let them know you found them via Keepin' Company Thursday.

* If you get a follow via Keepin' Company Thursday please follow them back.

* Add your blog name and the URL to your Keepin' Company Post to the link below. There is no need to add your link twice. You can do so either on my blog or at Traci66. It will show up at both regardless.

* You can also grab the blog hop code to add to your post if you want the thumbnails to appear in your post.

* If you add the Keepin' Company button to your sidebar and leave either of the hosteses, Heck of a Bunch or Traci66, a comment letting us know where to find it we will randomly draw a blog to be in the #3 spot next week. This week's #3 spot goes to Tifani's Mom.

Smead - Organizational Products Review

Bloggers, you know what I'm talking about when I say that there's a lot to keep track of. Reviews, giveaways, sponsorships, ads, and everything else in between. I can't imagine how anyone could do it without an organizational system.

I don't have a room dedicted to my home office (someday, in my dreams, I will) but I have an area set up by the computer in my bedroom that is especially for my blog materials. There's a method to my madness. Because I want all my records to be kept in order and to be around when needed, I want office and organizational products that are a cut above.

One need that I have for me is folders that will withstand my piles of paperwork. Smead, a company that is known for its environmentally responsible products and organizational systems, sent me their Tuff Folders and SuperTab Oversized-Tab Folders for review. They're not covered in patterns or designs but they are made to last.

The SuperTab Oversized-Tab Folders have a 90% larger label area and extra-wide oversized tabs. I like this because I want to be able to write large and see what each folder is for. Sometimes I label my folders in more than one word. With these I don't have to use miniscule writing skills. By golly, I can see what I write!

The TUFF Hanging Folders with Easy Slide Tabs are seven times stronger than other competitor's hanging folders. They are specially designed with reinforced rods and are 40% stronger to resist bending and paper tearing. Replaceable white tab inserts are included. I've used many a folder that either tears at the crease or falls apart after just a short time. So far these have withheld my many papers.

Not only do I like that this company makes something as simple as a folder more beneficial and convenient to the user, I also like that Smead uses recycled material for their products and their packaging.

Smead Organomics has a Facebook page where you can win some of their products. You can also get participate in challenges to get your office space on track.

Whether you work from home or in an office, consider Smead products for your organizational needs.

I received products for review and a Target gift card. The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way. Please do your own research before purchasing products. Your opinions and results may differ.

Wordful Wednesday - Two Birthdays and A Betterment

Only one week left until camping season's over. I think I've finally come to terms with it and am ready to move on until April. It's been tons of fun but I need a few months to recoupe.

Last weekend we kept busy with my sister's birthday, my nephew's wife's birthday, and a "betterment" event for a camping friend.

My sister is ten years older than me. We haven't always been real close due to the age gap but camping has brought us more together.

This is my niece and great-nephew at the birthday party. Look at the sleeping puppy wearing the birthday hat. Don't you just want to cuddle him up!

My sister wanted family photos of the day, so her son had everyone posing in all sorts of ways. The wind was fierce so our hair was blowing in all sorts of directions.

My daughter Shelby (on the right) hardly ever makes it to camp anymore due to job obligations. She snuck up there for a couple of hours and surprised me with her presence. Her and my step-daughter, Allyson, are BFFs.

The generosity of the campground was evidently shown Saturday night during the "betterment" for a friend with spina bifida. It's like a second family at camp and we always have each other's backs. This is my kids and a friend dancing with him, showing love and support.

Sunday we attended a birthday party for my nephew's wife. She's eight months pregnant. I'm thrilled that I'll be a great-aunt again soon.

Pillsbury Flaky Cinnamon Rolls - Review and Giveaway

Weekends are the busiest for our family. For the majority of the year, camping is our weekend life. Breakfast at camp on Saturdays is usually a large outdoor cooked meal with all the fixins'. Sunday we are preparing to pack up and head home so large breakfasts don't usually happen on that day. Having something that is fast to make, yet delicious to eat is a big consideration for our Sunday breakfasts. Pillsbury's breakfast foods fit that category.

Pillsbury recently introduced Flaky Cinnamon Rolls with Butter Cream Icing. Along with their other cinnamon rolls that we've tried before, these are very easy to cook and are rich in flavor. The cinnamon aroma that emits from the oven almost makes our mouths water. Cooking them to the right temperature gives the end result of a delicious, flaky cinnamon roll.

There are eight cinnamon rolls to a can, so I always have to purchase two in order to make sure that everyone gets a couple each.

If you'd like to try Pillsbury Refrigerated Flaky Cinnamon Rolls, you can print a coupon for $0.70 cents off a can through MyBlogSpark.

One person will win a Pillsbury Flaky Cinnamon Rolls Prize Pack that includes a coupon for a free can of Pillsbury Flaky Cinnamon Rolls, a scrapbooking kit that includes embellishments and pages, scrapbook scissors, and glue.

Handbag Heaven - 15% Friends and Family Discount

Last year for Christmas I got a handbag for my mother-in-law and a cosmetic case for my teenage step-daughter from Handbag Heaven. They must like them because I still see them being used almost a year later.

I'm not a purse fanatic like some women are, but I always want to sport a stylish and functional purse. I carry one with me at all times and usually rotate between them every six months. Handbag Heaven has a never-ending (or so it seems) assortment of handbags in every style, color, and size imaginable.

Christmas is here in just two months. Make your loved one happy with a new handbag and save money by using my Friends and Family Discount to get 15% off your purchase at Handbag Heaven.

Educational Insights - Stix & Stones Review and Giveaway

I have a closet shelf that is lined with games. Me and the kids like to get them out for some friendly competition. One that's been a favorite since we've played is Stix & Stones. It's a different variation of a game where you have to guess a picture before time runs out.

The game includes plastic sticks and stones, which are used to make a picture. I'm not an artist by any means, so it's fun to try to create an image out of simple pieces. The 75 game cards have 450 words of varying difficulty so players of all ages can play and you don't quickly run out of images to create.

The game is played by rolling a die and choosing a challenge card to find a word. Each person playing says out loud how many pieces of sticks and stones they need to make the picture. The person who says the lowest amount is the one who has the challenge of making the picture well enough for the other players to correctly guess. It's not like you have all the time in the world to come up with your idea to get people to guess. There's a timer for added pressure. The first team to fifty points wins the game.

Imagination and creativity definitely come into play with this game. It's been lots of fun and many laughs have come out from seeing how we try to make a cat, a car, or other pictures. The game comes in a box, but also includes a burlap sack to put the pieces and instructions in. It makes it easy to carry to different places.

This isn't the first time I've reviewed for Educational Insights and it's not the last. Every time I browse their site for educational toys, I always find something that my kids will enjoy.

Don't Lose Your Soul This Halloween

Halloween is this weekend and there will be many festivities to mark the event. Trick-or-treating, parties, carnivals, bonfires, and haunted houses make me shiver with excitement. Halloween is one of my favorite things to celebrate. I don't overanalyze it or read into it; I just like to have fun with all that surrounds this "holiday" that celebrates the dead.

Just because I like to celebrate Halloween and "see dead people" doesn't mean I want to be a part of burying a real body. Make no bones about it; Driving while impaired is frightening. I don't care if you're ten sheets to the wind or just two drinks in, there's no reason to get behind the wheel after drinking.

I have a full-time job. Add that in with six kids and a husband who sometimes acts like one. I think that gives me a pass to indulge in an alcoholic beverage every now and again. And guess what....I do!

What I won't do, even if I've had one drink, is drive anywhere. I'm all about keeping my life, thankyouverymuch. And I don't need my conscience to eat me up for taking anyone else's.

If you plan on drinking during Halloween, or anytime of the year for that matter, I plead with you to have a DD. That stands for Designated Driver, NOT Designated Drunk. Be kind to your designated driver and offer them non-alcoholic drinks. The Designated Driver Drink List offers fifty non-alcoholic party drink recipes. If you're unable to find a DD, the Alternative Ride Locator gives a list of nationwide alternative ride programs.

The Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving website has an interactive game that stimulates the effects of buzzed driving. You can also sign a pledge not to drink and drive, and watch a real-life video about how buzzed driving changed one woman's life.

If you are going to drink, don't dance with the devil.

I received no compensation or product for this post. In exchange for this post, I will be eligible to win a gift card courtesy of Global Influence. The opinions within this post are of my own and yours may differ.

May As Well Do the Haircutting Myself

My husband says he hears the words "I hate my hair" at least twice a month. It's not because I don't know how to style it. It's because I don't like the style of it. I used to make regular visits to different salons in town to get it cut or shaped but always came back saying the inevitable dreaded words of "I hate my hair".

Whether I ask for a razor cut, side swept bangs, or texture it seems I come out as unhappy as I came in. The last few times I've taken to cutting my hair myself. Looking like Edward Scissorhands, armed with a pair of hair shears, I snip and clip until I get the desired result. I'm a professional by no means, but it's how I've decided to take things into my own hands for now.

I have a standard set of hair shears that get the job done, but I think a pair of Kamisori Scissors would make my in-home salon experience more pleasurable. If I'm going to cut my own hair I may as well do it with the right tools.

The Garfield Show: Odie Oh! - DVD Review

Synopsis:

Garfield is back! Join the fun-filled, lasagna-loving feline as he plays amusing tricks on his not-so best friend Odie the dog. And watch as Garfield finds himself in sticky situations and going through "cat issues” all while learning a valuable lesson at the end of the day.

The Garfield Show: Odie Oh! DVD, brought to you by Vivendi Entertainment, released on DVD October 5th. It contains six segments.

My Review:

When I was a kid, I watched Garfield and Friends pretty faithfully. Now that I'm older, I'm glad to see that Garfield still lives on. Now airing on Cartoon Network is The Garfield Show and my kids watch it from time to time. They were happy that a DVD released that they can watch anytime they want.

I'll admit I watched this DVD with the kids and can see why the lazy Garfield, gullible Jon, and ever-so-happy Odie remain a classic. Back in the day, Garfield and Friends came in cartoon form. The Garfield Show comes in CG animation. I think it makes the characters seem more realistic. The updated version doesn't take away from the originality of Garfield.

This DVD brings amusement as Garfield gets into his usual antics and Odie tags along, remaining the faithful friend through it all.

Courtesy of the General Mills Pssst... Network I recently held a Chex Mix Snacks "Game Day" GetTogether. We had a few family and friends over to watch a friendly game of football. We all had our favorites to win and we had our favorite flavors of Chex Mix.

During the game we munched on the three Chex Mix flavors of Honey Nut, Traditional, and Turtle. With the Traditional Chex Mix, I added dried apples and soft caramel candies to add to the flavor. It also gave a small tasteful introduction of autumn.

The three bags of Chex Mix didn't last long. In fact, the football game lasted longer than the Chex Mix. Each guest ate their snacks on football themed napkins and plates. Everyone also received Chex Mix coupons to redeem at a later date.

From now until December 31st, Chex Mix is having a Ultimate Chex Mix Game Day Sweepstakes on Facebook where you can enter to win $10,000 in cash and prizes to make your place the ultimate Game Day spot.

Flat Irons Are Our Friends

We have a few flat irons at our house. It's a good thing too because myself and all four of the girls like to use them to straighten our hair or add volume. Flat irons are almost like everyday essentials and we tend to get crabby if we don't have one at our disposal when we want it.

Each of us girls seems to have our favorites when it comes to flat iron brands. My favorite thus far is the Karmin Flat Iron. My hair seems to be less frizzy and styling is easy when I use it.

Now if we only had more than one bathroom to do our hair in!

Jockey No Panty Line Promise Luxe Collection - Review and Giveaway

For the first time in my blogging career I did a video review. Twenty takes later and I'm sure I'll never be in the acting field. I imagine that I'll get a call from Tosh.O for a web redemption. I don't particularly like how the video turned out but what I do like is Jockey's No Panty Line Promise Luxe collection.

I was already familiar and happy with the Jockey brand, but I think the company raised the bar with their new collection of camisoles and panties. I've been wearing this collection for a while now and have noticed five key components that make it exceptional. I know the video only notes four, but that's due to me having video pressure and freezing up.

1. Soft - Made of nylon and spandex, these undergarments feel like smooth silk against your skin.

2. No Tags - You ever notice that when someone's tag is sticking out, you become fixated on it until it's tucked back in? Since this collection has no tags, you don't have to ask your friends "Hey, is my tag sticking out?" Itchiness and scratchiness of tags isn't a burden with these.

3. Form Fitting - Picking your underwear out of where the sun don't shine isn't exactly flattering. Not once have I had to partake in that embarassment with these panties. Nope, not once. And the camisole stays in place. The straps don't fall down and the bottom doesn't ride up to make a halter top.

4. No Panty Line Promise - There's a reason they called it the No Panty Line Promise Luxe collection. You guessed it, no panty lines. Slacks, sweatpants, jeans, shorts...you name it. It's all free from panty lines.

5. Ability To Wear Sheer Blouses - I have a handful of blouses in my closet that are thin enough to see through. I've tried wearing them a few times with other undergarments but it seems they then show through. The shirt I wore in the video sat in my closet for over a year because I couldn't figure out what to wear underneath it. I slipped the camisole on, then the shirt and found relief that I could wear the blouse again without it feeling like people are seeing things they ought not.

The camisoles and panties can be machine washed and dried. My normal routine consists of washing them in the machine, then hanging them to dry. However, one time a pair of the underwear slipped through my spy eye and made it to the dryer. I'll admit, I was a little concerned about the elasticity when they came out, but they were just as good as when they went in.

I have noticed that they tend to wrinkle up when they are dried. They look like they could use an ironing job, but I'm serious when I say those wrinkles seem to disappear once I put them on to actually wear.

The Jockey No Panty Line Promise Luxe collection comes in neutral colors of black, white nude, wink blue (the camisole color I own), and rose petal. While I like the neutral colors and think they work well with a lot of clothes, I'd like to see the collection expanded to include colors with designs and patterns.

The Jockey® No Panty Line Promise® Luxe Sweepstakes is going on until October 31st where you can enter to win a 4-night spa vacation for two at Canyon Ranch in Arizona or Massachusetts. Who couldn't use a spa getaway?! I know I could and that's why I entered myself.

From October 18th to the 29th, Jockey is randomly going to cities for their "Random Acts of Luxe" campaign. They will drop in unannounced at spas across the country and foot the bill for ladies getting spa treatments. They'll also give ladies free No Panty Line Promise Luxe styles. The cities they'll be going to are Chicago, IL, Gainesville, Miami, FL, Boston, MA, Denver, CO, and San Francisco, CA.

Keepin' Company Thursdays - Week 20

I'll be facing off with my biggest fear next week - the dentist. Petrified doesn't even begin to explain it. Giving birth is more preferred for me. The only reason I'm doing it is because I could be a stand-in for a jack-o-lantern at Halloween and I'd like to get that problem resolved. Is anyone else as scared of the dentist as I am or have any advice on how to calm my nerves without downing a fifth of vodka?
