Peace Scissors Rock - Review and Giveaway

Paper Scissors Rock is such a whimsical place with neat objects like alarm clocks, magnets, and night lights that just make you smile.  All of the clocks and magnets are reproductions of original paintings by artist Pamela Corwin and are created in her studio.  Even though the artist's work has been featured in several magazines and television shows, I've never heard of her until recently.  Since browsing upon the online site with products of her reproductions I can see why she's a personage, with her flair for color and playful designs.

I received an alarm clock with a heart design for review. It measures 2" and is square with a round face. Although quite small, it is still darling. It came packaged in a white box and included the battery. The second hand is a small heart to count the seconds. The alarm clock sits atop my computer desk and I set it for the afternoons when I need to get up. It is loud enough to hear, but not offensive. It's both cute and effective.

Win It!

One person will win choice of alarm clock, night light, or set of magnets.

Capresso Froth Pro - Automatic Milk Frother Review

I don't mind going to a specialty coffee shop once in a while but it's far and few between.  I have enough addictions that I don't want to shell out exorbitant amounts of money on cappuccinos and lattes.  Learning about and using the Capresso Froth Pro has given me the leisure to make these kinds of drinks from home.
Designed to create frothed or heated milk for cappuccinos, lattes or hot chocolate, this automatic milk frother whips your milk to your desired temperature of hot, warm, or cold.  The set-up comes with a milk pitcher with lid, two frothing disks, one heating disk, and the base unit.  Two disks are stored underneath the base of the appliance while one of the disks is inside the milk pitcher.

To make the desired milk toppings for my drink, I place either the frothing disk or the heating disk into the bottom of the milk pitcher, then pour cold milk in.  The pitcher is then placed on the heating platform and I push the desired temperature setting of hot, cold, or warm.  The button lights up and the machine starts automatically.  When the milk has reached the maximum temperature, the appliance will automatically shut off and the frothing action will stop.  I then put the milk on top of my drink.

The weather has been quite warm so I've been using the cold temperature most to give my hot coffee a little chill and make other iced coffee drinks. My son, Adam, is a hot chocolate fanatic and has been using the heating disk to make his own heated milk on top of his chocolate drink. I'm able to make my own cappuccinos without having to wait in line or pay big bucks.  And they taste just as good!  The steps to make my own frothed or heated milk are simple and the machine is small enough that it doesn't take up much room in my kitchen. I do wish the cord were a little bit longer to make it easier to plug into my outlets. The Capresso Froth Pro isn't a kitchen necessity, but it's nice to have and uncomplicated to use.

Capresso offers a selection of espresso machines, grinders, and kitchen appliances.  For more information, visit www.capresso.com.

Wordful wednesday - A Boy and His Dog

We've had Cisco for just a little over a month and he's become a special member of the family.  He's so mild-mannered and a joy to have around.  The kids are especially attached to him.

Adam had to hang with us at camp last weekend because his foot was swollen.  Cisco stayed by his side.  I've never been much of an animal lover, but I couldn't imagine our family without this attention-loving dog now.

Superheat House Party - Skateboard Trading Card Game Review

Growing up, skateboarding was in my brother's blood.  He ate, slept, and breathed skateboarding.  I learned some of the slang and tricks from him.  My boys don't know a lot about skateboarding, but have shown a minor interest in it.  When we were chosen to host a Superheat House Party, Logan and Adam were excited to join their friends in a collectible trading card game that revolves around pro skateboarders.

Logan and Adam had a few of their friends over to our campsite Saturday to get acquainted with Superheat.  Each kid received a goody bag of playing cards, a game mat, tattoos, and other items.  My sister and I went over the rules of the game beforehand and I'll admit it took us a while to get the gist of it.  There were words like "throwdown", "tricks", and "runs" that we had to figure out first.  Thankfully, a glossary for the words was included and we were able to figure it out to teach the boys.  By the end of the party, everyone had successfully figured out how to play Superheat and had fun.

Superheat games are started with Pro Cards that feature a pro skateboarder.  Once a player has chosen th eir Pro Card, the deck is shuffled and four cards are drawn.  Trick cards are then played which display points, power, and path icons on the cards.  A run is created by connecting tricks together.  Line colors must match and have arrows facing in the same direction to be connected and the point value must be more than the trick before it on the run.  There are also Throwdown Cards in the decks that can help you and/or hurt your opponent.  When you lay a throwdown card, the player who laid it down follows the instructions on the card.  At the end fo the turn, you can either choose to keep the score you have to draw again to keep going.  The player with the highest combined score wins the heat.  Starter decks and booster packs can be purchased to trade with others or add to the game.

Rashaad and Ozzy proudly sported the official Superheat logo t-shirts.  They were a little too young to understand the game but really liked the trading card aspect of it.

Each child in attendance received a goody bag of SuperHeat Games items.

These are the cards as they were played.

Logan, Adam, and Dalton, the three older boys, liked both aspects of SuperHeat Games.  They liked playing the game itself as well as seeing all the cards they each had for potential trading.

Back-To-School Cool with Bath & Body Works and YBF

I've noticed that my girls are different than my boys when it comes to back-to-school time.  The only thing Logan and Adam cared about was the look of their backpacks.  The girls, on the other hand, had their own designs in mind for everything and "needed" extras.  After all, how is a girl supposed to get through school without new hair pieces, jewelry, and other accessories?!

One must-have item, especially for Shelby and Allyson, are Bath & Body Works PocketBac Hand Sanitizing Gels.  Using holders specifically for the hand sanitizers, the girls carry them around on their purses and backpacks.  You won't see them without one.

Spreading love and not germs has never been easier or more fun with Bath & Body Works Anti-Bacterial PocketBac® Sanitizing Hand Gel 5-Pack Lunch Box Bundle ($7.50; Bath & Body Works and www.bathandbodyworks.com.) Natural ingredients and powerful germ killers that get hands clean and lightly scented, wherever you go. Includes 5 PocketBacs, one in each of their new lunch box fragrances: Marshmallow Treat, PB&J, Honey Pretzel, Juice Box and Bag of Grapes. They are formulated to kill germs without water and condition hands with tahitian Palm Milk.  None of us have to be sold on how great PocketBac hand sanitizing gels are; We already know.  This new Lunch Box Bundle is a new set that coordinates perfectly for school.  The designs and fragrances remind us of school lunches and snacks.

Lip Gloss is must have for teens and mom’s alike. ybf’s Liplights Lip Glosses ($19.80; www.ybfstacey.com) come in a set of three perfect pink shades. They are universal enough for yourself or your teen.  I rarely wear lip gloss, but like pinkish colors when I do.  Shelby wears it daily and Allyson puts some on during weekends.  The tubes ensure easy application and the colors of this lip gloss set give enough to show that you are wearing lip gloss but no so much that it looks like you're going for a night on the town.  They are acceptable tints to wear to school.

GLEE: The Complete Second Season - DVD Giveaway

Glee Tackles the Tough Topics
Helping Kids Go Back To School

The TV musical sensation GLEE has been a magnificent success in its second series, bringing more show stopping tunes, dazzling dancing and witty one-liners. But most importantly, Glee has also brought to our screens contemporary issues in society and has tackled these tough topics in a sensitive yet effective manner. Here are some examples we have seen this series:

Bullying

One of the biggest issues Glee has covered this season is bullying. All members of Glee are continually subject to bullying as they are considered to be the ‘school losers’ and are frequently drenched by slushies. The New Directions have a strong attitude against the bullies and stick up for each other. Kurt in particular, played by Chris Colfer, experiences the brunt of bullying at McKinley High to the extent that he decides to move schools to Dalton Academy where a strict anti-bullying policy is enforced. It is testament to Glee and their effective treatment of this issue that Chris Colfer has gained leading status and reputable accolades including a Golden Globe award, demonstrating the worldwide appraisal of the series. Celebrities such as Miley Cyrus have admitted that they have been subject to bullying and Demi Lovato has openly spoken about being bullied. Demi has also created a ‘Teens Against Bullying’ video to increase awareness and to help combat the problem.

Sexual Awareness

The main reason why Kurt is tormented and antagonised at McKinley High is because of his sexual orientation and his strong nature to not conceal this from his peers. Glee celebrates Kurt’s self-assuredness and demonstrates to young teenagers who are confused about their sexuality that they should be proud of who they are. Blaine, Kurt’s love interest who fronts Dalton Academy’s Warblers, provides Kurt with help and reassurance and reinforces the fact that Kurt should be who he wants to be if it makes him happy. Santana and Dave Karofsky both experience mixed feelings about their sexuality and are not ready, like Kurt, to be open about this issue. Glee demonstrates the confusion that sexuality can create for individuals but helps to show the teenage audience that when the time comes, people will be there to help you through.

Effects of Alcohol

We’ve all been there, having one too many to drink the night before work or school the next day and walking around with your friends wearing matching sunglasses. Ok maybe the last part is just Glee. Whilst Glee portrays this issue in a humorous and light hearted manner, the message is still very prominent about the serious effects of alcohol. Finn provides an enlightening discussion about the different effects of alcohol: Santana is the weepy drunk, Mercedes and Tina are the hysterical drunks who find everything funny and then Rachel and Blaine share a drunken kiss. Yet Finn doesn’t touch a drop of alcohol, showing that teenagers do not have to bow to peer pressure and can abstain from drink if they choose to. During the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two, Daniel Radcliffe has also spoken about the damage of excessive alcohol consumption and the destructive nature it can have. Radcliffe states at one point he was dependent on alcohol but since giving it up has become a lot happier. Glee helps to shed light on these issues and have created fantastic role models for teenagers to look up to.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Cleaning every grape individually, organising pamphlets on the desk and turning rigid at the thought of anything being messy. These are just some of the examples Emma Pilsbury’s OCD, a condition that is often not acknowledged within TV series. Glee illustrates the different characteristics of OCD and shows the help that is available for those who are living with it, as Emma herself decides to finally accept medical advice to control the disorder in Series Two. However, it is refreshing to witness Emma’s approach to her OCD, accepting that it is part of her and part of her personality with the overall message hopefully helping those who are dealing with OCD on their own. Several celebrities also suffer or have suffered with OCD, including Jessica Alba, Leonardo Di Caprio and Cameron Diaz but all have made their peace with the condition to prevent it from ruling their lives.

Physical Appearances and Plastic Surgery

Growing up can be an extremely difficult time for adolescents and the pressure of physical appearance is growing to be an ever more increasing concern. When Rachel is hit in the face by Finn and breaks her nose, the singer uses the opportunity to consider plastic surgery to change her features, despite the protests from her fellow members in New Direction. However, Rachel comes to the conclusion that she likes the way she looks and does not want to revert to plastic surgery. However, unlike Rachel, Quinn has had plastic surgery and has no regrets about her decision. It is rare for a TV show to depict a story of someone whose life was changed for the better by surgery, but this further highlights the groundbreaking and genre-defying success of Glee. In fact, it is a more accurate depiction of real life, where plastic surgery can help benefit some but can also go horribly wrong.

In a school like McKinley High, being popular is a massive issue and the school social ladder is a continual theme running throughout the whole of Series Two; several characters including Santana and Quinn are desperate to be at the top and be the most popular girl in school. Yet Glee and the members of New Directions show that as long as you have a caring group of friends that will always stick by you and you are happy with yourself if doesn’t matter what your school status is. Being popular isn’t everything! And the ‘Born This Way’ episode epitomises this as the Glee members all wear t-shirts with their insecurities written on them. For instance, Finn’s says ‘Can’t Dance’ and Mike’s says ‘Can’t Sing.’ Parents should remember that Glee shows teenagers that they should embrace these and be proud of who they are!

191Unlimited - Men's Apparel Review and Discount Code

I've done a couple of reviews for 191 Unlimited in the past and they are one of my favorite for mens and boys apparel.  They're also one of my favorites for customer service. The reps I've worked with are personable and quick to respond to any questions. I've dressed my boys up in their apparel for birthday parties, wedding receptions, and holiday photos. They always look snazzy dressed in their duds from 191 Unlimited.  My boys have grown some since they last received shirts from 191Kids, the sister site for boy's apparel, so they have permanently graduated to the men's clothing at 191Unlimited and recently received three shirts.

Apparel from 191Unlimited arrive bagged and on a hanger. Logan and Adam have worn their newest shirts from 191Unlimited a handful of times now and have plans to wear them for school pictures.   Having already been satisfied with previous reviews, I knew that I'd have exceptional dress shirts for my boys to wear when they needed to look nice. Logan and Adam like that the shirts are comfortable and look "super cool". I like that the shirts fit them so well and give a distinctive style.

Logan and Adam are the same size when it comes to shirts. The three shirts received this time were in mens size medium.  That is usually the same size they wear for all their other apparel and the fit was normal. I haven't seen any shrinkage or deterioration of the shirts any time I've washed them. They are well-made.

191 Unlimited, a men's clothing company started in 2002 by friends Parth Sharma and Girish Karnani. The founders had 4 original principles by which they wanted each shirt to be made: 1) Awesome Fit, 2) Extreme Comfort, 3) Innovative Detailing, and 4) Affordability. 191 Unlimited still employs these four core principles in the making of all of its products.

Each shirt looks classy on the guys and the intricate detailing is amazing. 191 Unlimited does sell short sleeve shirts, but the ones we've received were long sleeved. They are still thin enough to wear in warmer weather but not so thin that they lack quality. The new arrivals at 191 Unlimited are in a higher price range while the last chance items are quite affordable. Ties, tees, and bottoms are also available.  Anytime I've received shirts for Logan and Adam from 191 Unlimited, I've always been happy with the design and quality.

Exclusive Discount Code:  Use code heckofabunch at checkout for 50% off your order at either 191Unlimited.com or 191Kids.com.  Offer expires October 10, 2011.

Carmex Lime Twist and Carmex Vanilla - Review and Giveaway

Carmex, famous for its lip balms, has been used by my family often.  The teenage girls like to wear it on their lips and my husband has even put Original Carmex on the heels of his feet to soften them.  I swear, it worked!

Carmex has come out with two new lip balms, Carmex Lime Twist and Carmex Vanilla.  Each moisturizing lip balm contains SPF 15 sunscreen.  Both have subtle flavors, vanilla or lime, and neither leave our lips feeling sticky.  There's a clicking sound when the lip balm is dispensed so you know how much you are applying.  Both flavors are pleasant, but me and the girls liked vanilla best.  There are additional moisturizers in these lip balms to make lips feel their best.

Scrabble Turbo Slam - Review and Giveaway

I remember, back in the day, when I would play Scrabble with my mom and grandma.  It was quality time that brought a lot of memories and some competitiveness to see who could score the most points.  There is now a new game, Scrabble Turbo Slam, from Hasbro that is a play on the classic game.

Scrabble Turbo Slam is a game of fast and furious word building.  Borrowing elements from the classic crossword game, Scrabble Turbo Slam offers fun for the whole family.  Speed is the name of the game as players race to create four-letter words and get rid of their cards as quickly as possible.

The objective of the game is to get rid off all the cards being held by using them to build on top of a four-letter word, creating a new four-letter word.  The first player to get rid of all the cards being held wins.

The game starts out with a four-letter word and the electronic Turbo Slam Unit is turned on to activate the timer.  Players begin simultaneously by slamming their letter cards on top of the base word to create new words.  For example, G-A-M-E becomes F-A-M-E.  Players yell the words they create.  During the game, players must race to be the first to hit the Turbo Slam unit when they hear the turbo sound.  The first to hit the SLAM button will get an action card.  The action cards can either help you or hurt you, depending on what it says on the card.  For instance, the Slam Dunk card means that you can pass three cards to any other player.

Word games are my favorite and this one feeds that addiction.  Scrabble Turbo Slam was played for hours yesterday between me and the kids.  It's a game for 2 to 4 players, so we had tournaments where the winners of each round took on new opponents in the next round.  We looked like a bunch of maniacs trying to slam down our cards and yell out our words.  It was a good time and the sound effects added to the silly fun we had.  It's a game of high-speed action and word association.  The rules were very easy to follow and each individual game doesn't take forever and a day to play.  The game does require 3 AAA batteries, which are not included.

Win It!

One person will win a Scrabble Turbo Slam! Game.

Bath & Body Works - Paris Amour Review

We have a small obsession with Bath & Body Works at my house.  Between me and the two older girls, there's never a shortage of Bath & Body Works hand sanitizers, lotions, or shower gels.  The price is affordable and the fragrances are long-lasting.

Bath & Body Works has launched a new signature scent, Paris Amour.  Feminine and romantic, Paris Amour captures those first fleeting moments of falling in love.  The latest addition to the Signature Collection, Paris Amour evokes the enchanting spirit of the namesake city. Envelop yourself in Parisian allure every day with a blend of sweet sparkling florals and warm, creamy musk. A part of Bath & Body Works’ “Romantic” collection, Paris Amour is formulated to make you feel elegant, beautiful and chic.

I received samples of the Paris Amour shower gel and lotion.  No sooner did it make it in the house when Shelby rubbed on the lotion and immediately mentioned that she was going out to Bath & Body Works to purchase products from the new line.  And, sure enough, she has!

Paris Amour has romantic packaging and the smell gives hints of florals and musk.  It's a feminine, dreamy product line that is an esteemed favorite among us.

Animalogy: Animal Analogies - Children's Book Review

Book Synopsis:

Compare and contrast different animals through predictable, rhyming analogies. Find the similarities between even the most incompatible animals . . . bat is to flit as eagle is to soar; dog is to bark as lion is to roar. Comparisons include sounds, physical adaptations, behaviors, and animals classes and are so fun, readers learn without even realizing it! Animals are to nature, as Animalogy is to fun!

My Review:

There are animals and species of all kinds represented in Animalogy:  Animal Analogies.  The book is a very quick read with analogies on diverse groups of animals.  The illustrations are gorgeous and the last page in the book is a sweet surprise.  In the "For Creative Minds" section of the book explains and has questions about analogies and there's a learning section on animal classification.

Animalogy:  Animal Analogies is a Fall 2011 release from Sylvan Dell Publishing.

I received book for review from Sylvan Dell Publishing.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products.  Your opinions and results may differ.
