ETHOS: A Time For Change - DVD Review

DVD Synopsis:

ETHOS:  A Time For Change is hosted by the two-time Academy Award nominated actor and activist Woody Harrelson.  This documentary lifts the lid on a Pandora's box of systemic issues that has proven to have a negative impact on every aspect of our lives.  From the environment, our democracy and our personal liberty to conflicts of interest in politics and unregulated corporate power, we cannot change our system until we know how it works.

With interviews from influential though-leaders including author and activist Noam Chomsky, Chalmers Johnson, Oscar winning documentarian Michael Moore and Howard Zinn to name a few, ETHOS:  A Time For Change will show you how to make meaningful and sustainable change in order to create a world where we can live harmoniously in a clean environment.  More information about the movie can be found at www.ethosthemovie.com.

My Review:

ETHOS: A Time For Change is just a little over an hour long, yet it's jam-packed with some eye-opening information.  This DVD, with information told in laymen's terms, will make you think about who's controlling our government, media, and corporations.  Some of what you learn may enrage you and even shock you.  This is a movie for anyone who wants to know about how our system is really managed and how to do their part in making a change.

I received DVD for review from Cinema Libre Studio.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products.  Your opinions and results may differ.

New JELL-O Pudding Snack Flavors - Review

Get ready for the newest flavors from JELL-O Pudding Snacks, S'more and Strawberry Sundae!  These new JELL-O Pudding Snacks feature dual layers and textures that combine to form exciting flavors.  They are made with real milk and no artificial sweeteners.  The S'more Pudding Snacks have creamy chocolate graham flavored pudding and whipped marshmallow flavored topping.  The Strawberry Sundae Pudding Snack is strawberry ice cream flavored pudding layered with a sweet strawberry sauce topping.

I received both flavors of JELL-O Pudding Snacks for review and was content with them.  Each package has six individual cups of Pudding Snacks and the kids seemed attracted to the bold packaging designs.  The way that the cups are packaged means that you can take an individual one with you while on the go. My husband's only complaint is that he can't stop at just one. He'd be thrilled with the cups being bigger in size so he could enjoy more of the delicious pudding at once. I, on the other hand, like the size of the cups because it helps with portion control.  I preferred to eat the pudding snacks by using a spoon and swirling it around the cups so that both layers were mixed together.  Both flavors were well-received in my household, with Strawberry Sundae having a slight edge.

Magic Kitchen - Review and Giveaway

I work a night job as a 9-1-1 dispatcher.  We have a full kitchen to cook meals in but there's not an oven and there's not a lot of time to spend in the kitchen.  There's no set meal time.  You fix what you can when you can and bring it back to your console to eat.  Because of this, I usually bring leftovers from home or grab something from a fast food joint before heading in.

I recently discovered a company that allows me to have quick, delicious meals at work that are delicious and nutritious.  Magic Kitchen sells healthy, chef-prepared meals that are created using top-quality fresh produce and ingredients.  The meals arrive frozen and all you have to do is defrost, heat, and serve.  All dishes are chef-prepared, fully-cooked, and flash-frozen to preserve all of the flavors.

I received a bountiful sampling of food from Magic Kitchen.  It arrived frozen, in a styrofoam cooler.  The foods I received were:

                   Portabella/Shiitake Mushroom Ravioli
Beef with Bordelaise Sauce
Tiramisu
Rice Pilaf
Creamed Spinach
Fresh Cut Corn Medley
Rosemary Potatoes

With the exception of the Tiramisu, each package was one serving of food.

At first, I wasn't sure how well I'd like the dishes.  The packaging reminded me of frozen TV dinners, of which I'm not a fan.  I was fooled by the packaging because the food was scrumptious.

For several days, I'd take a couple of the packaged dishes to work and heat them up for my meal.  I had to set them out to thaw in my fridge at home first.  Once I was ready to eat the food, all I had to do was remove the plastic wrap and place it in the microwave for 3-4 minutes.  With the exception of the Tiramisu, each dish was microwaveable.  With the Tiramisu, I left it in the fridge and would place a couple spoonfuls into a bowl when I was ready to eat it.

Each and every one of my food dishes from Magic Kitchen tasted fresh and delicious.  The Portabella/Shiitake Mushroom Ravioli was my favorite, with the Fresh Cut Corn Medley coming in a close second.  I've never had ravioli with mushrooms in it before and I couldn't get enough once I tasted it.  The only discontent that I had with any of the food was with the Beef with Bordelaise Sauce.  It has a very small amount of fat on the meat.  I'm extremely picky with my meat and don't like fat or gristle but other than that, the cut of meat covered in sauce was very flavorful.

Every food dish on the Magic Kitchen website has a comprehensive list of ingredients, heating instructions, and nutrition facts.  There's also a MK Meals Special Diets Menu with a list of diabetic-firendly meals, renal diet meals, portion controlled meals, and more.

I was very satisfied with the food from Magic Kitchen and would recommend it.  I think they'd be particularly good for people who live alone, someone who uses portion control, as a quick meal when you're in a hurry, or for any other reason  you want food that is full-flavored.

One person will win a $50 Magic Kitchen gift certificate.

Aprons&Smocks.com - Apron Review

As many of my readers know I camp every weekend for seven months out of the year.  I have my camper permanently parked at a nearby campground.  Every weekend is filled with activities.  Raffles, games, poker stands, and more keep us occupied.  The campground has a couple of ratty waist aprons with a home supply business logo that we use to collect money or tickets in.  The aprons do the trick but the new Black Button Bib Apron I received from Aprons&Smocks.com is a morale booster for the campground activities.

With three pouch pockets, this bib apron allows the wearer to keep supplies and money nearby and closely guarded.  Available in the color black, it has a snap closure neck adjustment that makes it easy to take off and on, and adjusts to different neck sizes.  The fabric is made of poly-cotton twill and protected by ProDura Soil Release finish.  The length and width of the apron provides ample coverage.  It ties at the waist and three buttons adorn the front.  I was able to customize the apron with embroidery in choice of color and had it embroidered with the words "Whispering Oaks", the name of the campground.  The apron has a mostly feminine look so I'm not sure how well it will be received by the men at the campground, but the ladies I've shown it to are excited to wear it to campground activities and are quite impressed with the embroidery and design of the apron.
Aprons&Smocks.com provides quality restaurant uniforms manufactured by quality uniform apparel manufacturers.  They specialize in hospitality and restaurant uniforms with a complete line of waist aprons, bib aprons, smocks, lab coats, chef coats, and more.  Screen printing, embroidery, and other customization services make the aprons and smocks personable to your company.

I received product for review from Aprons&Smocks.com.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Tooth Fairy 2 - DVD Giveaway

Top 5 Film Fairies

Inspired by TOOTH FAIRY 2

The comedy with bite is back and funnier than ever; TOOTH FAIRY 2 arrives on Blu-ray and DVD March 6 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The one man comedy phenomenon, Blue Collar Comedy Tour’s Larry the Cable Guy (Cars, Cars 2, and History Channel’s Only in America) sinks his teeth into this outrageous follow-up to the 2010 theatrical hit Tooth Fairy.

In TOOTH FAIRY 2, Larry becomes part of a long list of awesome fairies on film. This feature will explore our top five favorite fairies, including Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream and Tinker Bell in Hook.

Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Stanley Tucci stars as Puck in the 1999 film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In this adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, Tucci’s Puck is a clever and mischievous sprite, who, under the tutelage of King Oberon (played by Rupert Everett), plays tricks on unsuspecting lovers who wander into the forest which he inhabits. His hijinks include making people fall in love with each other, facilitating mud wrestling, and giving an amateur actor the head of an ass.

Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2

Jennifer Saunders voices the evil Fairy Godmother in 2004’s Shrek 2. This atypical fairy godmother is more of a self-involved business woman than the selfless fairy that people imagine, making shady deals, running a heartless factory, and using her magic for personal gain. However, Fairy Godmother’s shining moment may be when she performs a stellar rendition of “Holding Out For a Hero” at the royal ball, before being disintegrated by her own spell.

Tinker Bell in Hook

1991’s Hook follows a grown-up Peter Pan who has forgotten his childhood and all of the adventures it contained, but is forced to relive the magic of Neverland when Captain Hook abducts his children and holds them hostage there. In this revamp of the classic tale, Julia Roberts plays an especially fiesty version of Tinker Bell. Tinker Bell isn’t afraid to take controll of a situation, and often works to save Peter’s life because she is deeply in love with him.

Crysta in FernGully: The Last Rainforest

FernGully: The Last Rainforest is a 1992 animated film about a forest filled with magical creatures, and their struggle to save their home from pollution and logging. Crysta (voiced by Samantha Mathis) is a young fairy who meets a logger named Zak, and accidentally shrinks him down to her size. Crysta heroically battles Hexxus, an evil spirit that feeds off of pollution and destruction, and manages to defeat him and save FernGully.

Mandy in Ella Enchanted

In 2004’s Ella Enchanted, Minnie Driver plays Mandy, a kindhearted household fairy. Mandy is the only person, aside from Ella herself, who knows about Ella’s “gift” of obedience. While well meaning and helpful, Mandy’s spells often go awry. For instance, Mandy’s boyfriend, Benny, was accidentally turned into a book. However, in the end Mandy is able to help Ella reverse her curse of obdience and change Benny back into a human, making her an awesome fairy.

A Prayer Answered

It's been three weeks in a row that hubby has went to church with me.  That's a miraculous feat in and of itself.

I've went to church off and on throughout my life and my husband has never had a problem with me going.  But to get him to go was almost impossible.  I think Jason started going just to shut his boss up.

His boss started attending the same church I do a couple months ago and really liked it.  He started prodding Jason into going.  Rather than continuing to have to listen to it, Jason caved in and went.  And he's been twice since!

The series has been on relationships and marriage.  I posted just a couple weeks ago about this series and how marriage is not a couch.  I made a personal vow to work harder in my marriage and show more respect and love towards my husband.  Not that it's ever been downright horrible, but my marriage is the best it's ever been.  The lines of communication are more open and me and Jason are much more loving towards each other.  I think Jason's actually been listening to the sermon and applying it to our lives.

I actually haven't prodded or pushed Jason on the church subject other than to say that I'm glad he's been going with me.  I don't want to be overzealous.  He actually mentioned last night that things have been better in his life since he's been going.

It's been a dream of mine for Jason to attend church with me and now my prayers have been answered!

Disclaimer:  I'm a sinner.  I suck at obeying all the rules.  I do things that aren't right.  A lot of people would probably even scoff at me calling myself a Christian because of some of my actions.  Guess what?!  Don't care.  Despite my goofy behavior, Jesus loves me.

Chuggington: Brewster's Little Helper - DVD Review and Giveaway

DVD Synopsis:

Chuggington:  Brewster’s Little Helper, from Anchor Bay Entertainment, arrived in stores nationwide February 14, 2012.

“Brewster’s Little Helper” will have preschoolers honking their horns alongside their favorite trainees, Wilson, Brewster and Koko, through six energetic episodes. In the title episode, Zephie is determined to prove that she can pull her weight. After overhearing Brewster’s tasks for the day, she tries to take care of them all, but winds up chugging headlong into trouble. When Zephie is unable to complete the chores correctly, she realizes she still has some growing up to do. And, with a little help from Brewster, everything gets back on track. Each of the additional episodes – Koko Takes Charge, Brewster Knows Best, Zephie’s Zoomaround, Nurse Wilson and Wilson And The Paint Wagon – are filled with loads of fun and coupled with positive lessons for preschoolers such as patience, teamwork, responsibility, friendship, creative thinking and more.

My Review:

With it's CGI animation and likable characters, the engines of Chuggington are pleasing to preschoolers and their parents. With six adventures that each have a run time of approximately ten minutes, Brewster's Little Helper will keep the attention and entertain the minds of young children, while instilling some valuable lessons along the way.  The trains are just too darn cute and have a genuine like for each other. The other characters in the show, like the conductors, look and speak like real people. Unlike some shows that have characters who speak gibberish, the characters on Chuggington have a vocabulary that is plain and easy to understand.

Bonus features include coloring and activity sheets.

Win It!

One person will win Chuggington: Brewster's Little Helper on DVD.

Home Dreams

I'm pretty blessed with my life and where I live.  Can't complain too awful much.  But it doesn't stop me from dreaming of additions for my home that would make my life easier or more comfortable.  For instance, I have emerald green carpet throughout the bottom level of my home.  Having carpet stair treads outdoor would trap mud and water to keep me from having to be so careful and mindful of cleaning my indoor carpet all the time.  A one stop gardens greenhouse would be handy to grow and maintain beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens.  Of course, I'd have to get a green thumb fast!  While I'm dreaming of what would make my home even more beautiful, the elegant look of an old hickory tannery tiger sofa would look lovely in my living room.

What additions or add-ons would you like to have in your home?

Tropical Traditions - Liquid Soap Review and Giveaway

Tropical Traditions is a company I've become familiar with for their line of organic foods and healthy products.  Some of their products I've used and come to like is the coconut oil, palm shortening, and laundry detergent.  This time I was happy for the opportunity to review their Liquid Soaps.

Tropical Traditions soaps are made with Organic Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil as their base, and the scented varieties use only high-quality organic essential oils. Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil is traditionally made from fresh organic coconuts, and independent laboratory tests show that it has a higher level of antioxidants than other coconut oils. While other coconut oil soaps may exist in the market place containing refined coconut oil, few if any will be made with high quality Organic Virgin Coconut Oil.

Tropical Traditions Natural Liquid Soaps are made from 100% organic Virgin Coconut Oil, and nothing else. The scented varieties have organic essential oils added. They are packaged in a special foam pump dispenser that adds air to the soap, causing a rich lather of foam to come out.

There are three varieties of Tropical Traditions Liquid Soap - Unscented, Tea Tree, and Lavender.  I first started out with Lavender and the family has used it up.  Now the Tea Tree is being used in the bathroom while Unscented is in the kitchen.  One or two pumps squirted on your hands is all it takes to make my family's hands feel clean.  There's a generous white, foamy lather and the soaps are able to get rid of a good amount of grease and grime that generates on my husband's hands daily.  I prefer scent in my hand soaps, so Lavender is my favorite, but all three are fine for cleaning hands without drying them out.

Win It!

One person will win Tropical Traditions Organic Liquid Soap in choice of Lavender, Tea Tree, or Unscented.

The Legacy of Eden - Book Review and Giveaway

Book Synopsis:

For generations, Aurelia was the crowning glory of more than three thousand acres of Iowa farmland and golden cornfields. The estate was a monument to matriarch Lavinia Hathaway's dream to elevate the family name—no matter what relative or stranger she had to destroy in the process. It was a desperation that wrought the downfall of the Hathaways—and the once-prosperous farm.

Now the last inhabitant of the decaying old home has died—alone. None of the surviving members of the Hathaway family want anything to do with the farm, the land or the memories.

Especially Meredith Pincetti. Now living in New York City, for seventeen years Lavinia's youngest grandchild has tried to forget everything about her family and her past. But with the receipt of a pleading letter, Meredith is again thrust into conflict with the legacy that destroyed her family's once-great name.

Back at Aurelia, Meredith must confront the rise and fall of the Hathaway family…and her own part in their mottled history.

About the Author:

Nelle Davy was born in Grenada in 1984 and was raised in London within an Anglo-Caribbean family.  She studied English with creative writing at the University of Warwick and then undertook a master of philosophy degree in creative writing at Trinity College Dublin.  She currently lives in London with her husband, where she works in publishing.  The Legacy of Eden is her first novel and she is currently working on her second.

THE LEGACY OF EDEN Scavenger Blog Hunt

Each day in February, a section of the chapter will be featured by a book blogger which is listed in a guide.   In addition to the scavenger hunt, you’ll find reviews, author Q&A sessions, guest blog posts, and giveaways throughout the blog tour. Books featured in the hunt are on the edge of their release date – so you get to start reading it first!

My Review:
The Legacy of Eden details a lineage of family and how their behaviors and actions are carried on.  Sisters are forced to confront the past when they are contacted to make plans for the farm after a family death.  The family farm is revered as the central property for all to be envious of, yet many secrets lie behind its doors.  The author did a fine job of detailing the characters' emotions and interactions.  The storyline shows the domino effect that takes place from generation to generation within a family and how one person's past can shape another's future.  The ending left me wondering about a key element.  I'm fairly certain about what happened between two certain characters but it wasn't blatantly pointed out, so I feel it fell a little short there.  Other than that, the book was well written and I was immersed in the dynamics of the characters and storyline.

Win It!

Two winners will each receive a book copy of The Legacy of Eden.

Vet Depot - CET Dental Chews Review

I've never been much of an animal lover.  That changed about a year ago when we got our dog, Cisco.  Other than the fact that he likes to lay on the couch and wants nonstop attention, he's the perfect dog.  Cisco is a little over seven years old, and that's over the hill in dog years.  His health is generally good and I want to keep it that way.

Vet Depot sent me some CET Dental Chews for review and I was more than happy to try them out on Cisco.  CET Chews are nutritious dental hygiene treats for dogs and cats that help clean teeth, freshen breath, and prevent plaque and tartar buildup.  When used in conjunction with a regular home dental care program, CET products make taking care of your pets' teeth and gums easy.

The CET Chews for large dogs comes in a package of 30 treats made with an abrasive texture.  The bag opening is resealable.  Light brown in color, the treats are hard, thin, and long.  Although they're not a substitute for regular dental checkups, the chews are a worthy supplement.  Cisco is given one of the chews every day in the evening.  I'm pretty sure he likes them.  Every time he's given a treat, he'll go straight to the front room and chew on it until it's gone.  He seems to look forward to receiving his daily treat.
Vet Depot is a leading supplier of discount ped medications, pet supplies, and nutritional supplements for dogs, cats, and horses delivered direct to your door.

I received product for review from Vet Depot.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products.  Your opinions and results may differ.

The Rebound - DVD Review

Cuddle up with a captivating comedy, and learn that age is just a number with Academy Award®-winner Catherine Zeta-Jones* (No Reservations, Chicago) and Justin Bartha (The Hangover, National Treasure: Book of Secrets) in The Rebound, on Blu-ray and DVD, from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Upon discovering her husband’s infidelity, Sandy (Zeta-Jones) and her two kids move from the suburbs to pursue a new life in the big city. There she meets Aram (Bartha), a local coffee shop employee whose wife only married him as a means to getting her green card. The two strike up a friendship which eventually evolves into something more. But it isn’t long before they’re faced with the big question - “Is this real or just a rebound?”

The Rebound also features fantastic supporting performances from Lynn Whitfield (The Women, Madea’s Family Reunion), John Schneider (“The Dukes of Hazzard,” Lake Placid 2) and music legend Art Garfunkel.

My Review:

The Rebound is about Sandy and Aram, both people who are going through relationship transitions, and how they develop feelings for each other even though Sandy is older than Aram.  More a romance than a comedy, this movie is rated R for nudity and crudeness.  The characters are relatable and the plot is smooth but I expected to see more comicalness.  I'd recommend The Rebound as a movie you'd watch while hanging with your girlfriends, no kids allowed.

I received DVD for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Feuerwear - Shoulder Bag Review

I work as a 911 Dispatcher.  It is my job to dispatch fire, sheriff, police and ambulance, among many other job requirements.  When I first heard of Feuerwear, I was very intrigued because their bags, belts and wallets are made from recycled fire hoses.  To have a bag that was made of material used in lifesaving situations would be somewhat of an honor.

Every Feuerwear product is a one-of-a-kind piece.  Before the hoses are received by the company, they were used extensively by firefighters for many years.  They were dragged through soot, grease and mud, in extreme heat and fire, and had to transport thousands of cubic meters of water.

I received a Dan Shoulder Bag for review from Feuerwear.  It is now what I carry around everyday.  Made of fire hose, recycled PVC sheet (similar to truck tarpaulin), and safety seat belt material, this bag is spacious with lots of details.  Concealed outside pockets and various inside compartments help organize and locate all the contents of the bag.  Handles on the bag make it easy to carry by hand.  There's also an adjustable shoulder strap so you can carry it on your shoulder.  If you don't want the shoulder strap at all, it can be removed.  There are two ways to close the bag, either with a snap fastener or a zipper.  The outside of the shoulder bag is easy to clean. I've spilled soda on it and was very easily able to wipe it off.  The Feuerwear label is sewn on the outside of the bag.

The detail of this bag is amazing, inside and out.  There are several sections to place your items and know where they are located.  Some are an exterior front pocket with a zipper across the width of the bag, a  hidden zippered pocket in the top of the outside, a large side pocket inside with a zipper, and a compartment for your cell phone and pens.  Attached is a key finder so you can clip your key ring and not have to hunt for your keys.

The white material on the outside of my shoulder bag has the word "GEPRUFT".  I looked the word up and it's German for certified or inspected.  All Feuerwear production is done in Europe and the fire hoses are not from America, so the words on the bags may be unfamiliar to some.  The front side of my shoulder bag shows signs of dirt and grease. All materials are cleaned thoroughly before the bags and accessories are put together, but there's still signs of built-in grease and soot.  It's supposed to look like that and that's part of the individuality of the bag.  I've had a couple of people approach me and tell me that I should get a new bag or clean this one because it looks worn out on the front.  It's then that I proudly tell them the story behind the bag.

I adore my Feuerwear shoulder bag for the design, for the history it tells, and for the uniqueness of it.

Hips & Curves - Plus Size Lingerie Review (18+)

*Although this post contains no graphic content and is tasteful in writing, there's a possibility you could be offended by talk of lingerie and similar subject matter.  If that's the case, please continue on to the next post.  If not, read on!*

I'm a girl of thick stature.  Always have been, probably always will be.  I know nobody wants to see my muffin top.  Heck, I don't even want to see it!  Midriffs are out of the question.  But just because I'm plus size doesn't mean I don't want to feel good and look good.  My husband still thinks I'm rockin' it and I know he'd prefer to see me in alluring undergarments and lingerie once in a while.

Hips & Curves, a company that offers the latest and greatest in plus size lingerie, knows that plus size women want to celebrate beauty and sensuality as much as their smaller counterparts.  Hips and Curves was kind enough to send me a couple of their pieces for review.

The Soft Lace Plus Size Bra has unpadded underwire cups and soft fabric lining beneath lace detail, with black lace trim.  I won't mention what bra size I wear but I received this bra in my size and it fits comfortably.  The straps stay in place and the underwire doesn't poke my skin.  It doesn't provide much cleavage but does provide much coverage.  It's a very feminine bra that makes me feel more sensual.

The Football Jersey Babydoll is short sleeved knit chiffon with the words "Tackle Me" and the number 69 printed on front in shimmering pink.  It comes with a matching black thong.  It's now one of my favorite pieces of lingerie.  The way the top fits my body makes me feel flirtatious rather than silly.  It doesn't squeeze out my jiggly parts and instead gives an appealing look to my figure.  Due to the sheerness of the fabric, I hand wash the babydoll rather than put it in a washing machine, to preserve the material.  My husband isn't much of a football fan but he always wants to tackle me when I'm wearing this!

It's refreshing to know of a company like Hips & Curves that wants women, regardless of shape and size, to show off their spicy side.
