Wordful Wednesday - Halloween Party

Last Saturday a couple we are good friends with hosted a Halloween party in their home.  I dressed up as Flo from Progressive, complete with apron and nametag.  Granted, it wasn't an exact match but people got the idea.  I even went around sporting a red eye all night because the blood vessels in my right eye had burst.  I looked more like Flo's twin gone wrong.

Flo from Progressive, Swiss Miss, a bumblebee and a cat

Me and my man
A beekeeper and his bumblebee

Guess the outdoor music was up too loud.  The homeowners got a written warning for noise.  Oopsy daisy!

Animal Helpers: Wildlife Rehabilitators - Children's Book Review

Book Synopsis:

Like humans, animals can get sick or hurt. People see doctors. Pets have veterinarians. What happens to wild animals when they are injured, become ill, or are orphaned? Often, wildlife rehabilitators are called to their rescue. This photographic journal takes readers “behind the scenes” at four different wildlife rehabilitation centers. Fall in love with these animals as they are nursed back to health and released back to the wild when possible. This is the first of a photographic series introducing the different ways and the many people who care for a wide variety of animals.

My Review:

Shown with actual photographic images, Animal Helpers: Wildlife Rehabilitators gives children insight on the tasks required of wildlife rehabilitators.  It is a beautiful book that will help young readers learn about this special job occupation.  In the "Creative Minds" section in the back of the book is a compare and contrast of Rehabilitators and Veterinarians, help on determining if an animal is orphaned or just left alone, and true or false questions on injured animals.

Animal Helpers: Wildlife Rehabilitators is a Fall 2012 release from Sylvan Dell Publishing.

The Watch - DVD Review

DVD Synopsis:

Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade take male bonding to hilarious new heights in this outrageous, no-holds-barred comedy that gets funnier every time you watch!  The Watch will release on DVD and Blu-ray November 13, 2012.

There’s trouble brewing in peaceful Glenview, Ohio. That’s why four civic-minded citizens, armed with flashlights, walkie-talkies and spiffy new jackets, have teamed up to safeguard their community. But the guys find more than they bargained for when they uncover an alien plot to destroy Earth, and now these bumbling heroes are Glenview’s only chance to save the neighborhood — and the world — from annihilation!

My Review:

I viewed The Watch with my husband and thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.  The movie stars Ben Stiller who plays a Costco manager named Evan.  Evan discovers a security guard murdered in the store and decides to form a neighborhood watch.  Three men join Evan in the neighborhood watch and form a bond of raunchiness, slapstick humor and immaturity.  It is later found out that aliens are the ones who have done the murder and have a plan to destroy the world.  It is up to Evan and his team of vigilantes to save Earth.

Vince Vaughn had me laughing hard throughout the movie.  He was my favorite actor, especially when I took notice that he kept calling one of his cohorts different vulgar nicknames throughout the scenes.  Ben Stiller did a good job as well but his humor fell flat.  This movie is for adults and definitely not recommended for children.  There is profanity, nudity, and raunchiness throughout.  It appeals mostly to men but I, for one, got several laughs out of this movie.

I received DVD for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Random Tuesday Thoughts - Pumpkin Carving

Hello and welcome to Random Tuesday Thoughts.  If you'd like to post your random thoughts and play along, you can link up at Stacy Uncorked.
Friday night me and Adam went to a friend's pumpkin carving party.  I'd like to say that we are master pumpkin carvers but it could be further from the truth.  The pumpkins we carved turned out with crooked eyes and cockeyed mouths.  It's the experience that counts, right!

Someone brought these festive appetizers to the pumpkin party.  I thought they were pretty neat.  They're deviled eggs with spiders on them.  The spiders are made from cut up olives.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by Superstorm Sandy.  My heart especially goes out to all the emergency workers.  I saw on TV where 911 Telecommunicators in New York took in almost 10,000 calls in half an hour.  I work for 911 and would be absolutely bonkers if I had that call volume.  Everybody, please be safe if you're in the storm's path.
-------------------------------------

My 14 yoa son is a dorkus.  While I was in my vehicle last week he hopped on my lap and strapped us both into the seatbelt.  He then proceeded to pretend he was driving.  Ahhh, the things he does for fun...and to torture his mom!
----------------------------
Are you prepard for Halloween?  I always enjoy seeing people dressed up in costume.  I work Halloween night so I doubt we'll be doing anything special.

Happy RTT!

Purex plus Oxi - Review and Giveaway

Purex plus Oxi, a new stain-fighting liquid laundry detergent from Purex, is the most powerful Purex detergent available.  The three stain-fighting enzymes in Purex plus Oxi each work against different types of stains; In fact, it works against over 101 different stains.  Purex plus Oxi is specially formulated to work in both high efficiency washers and traditional washing machines.

I have six kids and a husband who are bound and determined to attract dirt and stains to their clothing.  I've used Purex laundry detergent for a while now, due to its affordability and ability to clean clothes, and was enthusiastic to try the new formula.  Purex plus Oxi has done a pretty good job at removing almost any stain that's clung to fabric.  Rather than use a separate pretreater, I've been using Purex plus Oxi by pouring it onto the stain and letting it sit for a few minutes before putting the clothes in the washer.  By doing this and using Purex plus Oxi in my wash, I've noticed that I don't have to stress so much about stains coming out of clothes.  The laundry detergent is successful at removing dirt, food, and sweat stains from my family's clothing.  Purex plus Oxi is available in one scent, Fresh Morning Burst.  I like the smell of the detergent but the scent doesn't seem to stay on clothes very long.  All in all, I have a favorable impression of new Purex plus Oxi.

Win It!

One person will win two coupons for free Purex plus Oxi laundry detergent.

Green Giant Seasoned Steamers - Review

Green Giant has come out with Seasoned Steamers, flavorful vegetables available in six varieties:

•Backyard Grilled Potatoes: roasted potatoes with peppers and onions

•Tuscan Seasoned Broccoli

•Mediterranean Blend of Potatoes, Zucchini and Carrots

•Brussels Sprouts with sea salt and cracked pepper

•Honey Dijon Carrots

•Honey Roasted Sweet Corn, with peppers

Seasoned Steamers are premium vegetables seasoned with unique chef-inspired seasonings, packed in convenient easy to steam bags.  You can find Green Giant® Seasoned Steamers™ at a retailer near you.

I've tried two of the varieties of Seasoned Steamers, the Backyard Grilled Potatoes and the Tuscan Seasoned Broccoli.  They came in a microwavable bag and were easy to make.  All you have to do is pop them in the microwave and nuke them for the amount of time indicated on the bag.  The potatoes and broccoli tasted fresh and were very flavorful.  They had the right amount of seasoning, not too much and not too little.  I think that one bag of Seasoned Steamers would sufficiently serve 2-3 people, but additional bags would need to be purchased if feeding more than that.  I plan on purchasing the other varieties and trying them out.  I think they'd be a delicious side dish to take to work and consume.

Scary Side Effects of Halloween Contact Lenses

While many kids play it safe on Halloween, it is becoming increasingly popular to don elaborate costumes, including decorative contact lenses – ones that give you a “cat eye” or “white out” for example. The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns parents and teenagers about the dangers of wearing non-prescription decorative contact lenses, which can lead to eye damage or vision loss due to improper fitting.

To keep your child’s eyes safe:

· Kids should receive a complete eye exam yearly by an eye care professional and obtain a valid contact lens prescription, even for cosmetic lenses

· Decorative lenses should never be worn without an eye exam and a prescription

· Contact lenses should never be shared with another person

· Be sure to wash hands thoroughly with mild soup before insertion and never wear them for longer than recommended

· Examine lenses before putting them in your eye – they should be moist, clean, clear and free from any nicks or tears

· Remove lenses immediately if you experience eye discomfort, excessive tearing, vision changes and redness and consult your eye care professional immediately

Introducing the VIPeas and A Fruity Faux Sushi Recipe

Bean Sprouts is all about healthy food and happy tummies.  Bean Sprouts is on a mission to create a viral VIPea phenomenon featuring good-for-you-food.  They are introducing VIPeas, with the newest one being Nori Spelling (a play off the famous actress).

Courtesy of The Kitchn, here is a Fruity Faux Sushi recipe.

makes 4 rolls

Ingredients:

4 slices whole wheat bread

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 Granny Smith apple or 1 mango, sliced into 1/4-inch strips

1/4 cup raisins or 1/4 cup toasted coconut

Juice of 1/2 lemon (optional)

Equipment: sushi mat, plastic wrap, rolling pin or tortilla press

If you're using apples and won't be eating the rolls right away, toss the strips with a little lemon juice.

For the rolls, start by flattening the slices of bread. We used a tortilla press lined with plastic wrap, but a rolling pin would work fine too. Cover the sushi mat with plastic wrap. Spread peanut butter on one slice of bread, covering the whole slice. Add desired fillings horizontally on the bottom third of the slice.

Using the mat, carefully roll from the bottom of the slice, tucking the ingredients under. Pull back the mat and plastic wrap and finish rolling the bread. Use the mat to shape and secure the roll. Slice into 5-6 pieces. Repeat with remaining slices of bread.

Tail Towns Friends - Facebook Game Review

I participate somewhat regularly on Facebook but have never joined any of the social media games associated with it.  I was invited to try Ganz Tail Towns Friends, a new Facebook gaming experience and have been checking out the storylines, challenges, and adventures.

Tail Towns Friends delivers a gaming experience with custom-designed collectible fully hand-painted figurines, combining the real world and virtual world.  A game created for grownups, Tail Towns Friends offers players storylines and photo-realistic art.  Players help friends and supply city businesses admist unfolding tales of drama.  Players have the ability to create the ultimate landscaped country getaway.

Of the collectible figurines, I received the Gardener with a secret code.  By registering the secret code on Tail Towns Friends, I was able to unlock the character's exclusive storyline and "Secret Diary Goals" which provide insight into the character's life.  Each figurine rewards users with an exclusive specialty virtual item.

The purpose of the game is to run an orchard and complete goals.  Players are able to "buy" and "sell" items  and complete challenges to earn money and energy.  I've completed a few goals and have enjoyed where I'm at so far in the game.  The storylines are fun to read and the characters are cutesy.  One disadvantage, I feel, is that certain goals require asking for help to do things from other members, or friends, of the game.  I don't know of any of my Facebook friends who play the game so it is quite difficult for me to complete those goals.  Ganz Tail Towns Friends is an interesting gaming experience, and I look forward to playing more with my special character to build my property and learn more about the virtual world.

Solar System Forecast - Children's Book Review

Book Synopsis:

Freezing temperatures, scorching heat, and a storm bigger than planet Earth is just some of the wild weather you will encounter on your trip through our solar system! Get your fun facts along with your forecast for each major planet, as well as the weather on dwarf planet Pluto, and Saturn's moon Titan. Any child with an interest in space is sure to love Solar System Forecast, and parents will love the educational “For Creative Minds” section in the back of the book. My Review:

Solar System Forecast takes you on a journey with a weatherman who tells the weather of all of the planets.  Children learn which planets are livable, which are windy, and even which one is raining  methane.  The book is enjoyable and teaches children along the way.  In the 'For Creative Minds' section of the book, more learning and education is taught with a Solar System Compare and Contrast, The Sun: Heat and Light, and Thinking It Through: Life and Basic Needs.

Solar System Forecast is a Fall 2012 release from Sylvan Dell Publishing.

CAT Job Site Machines - Review and Giveaway

Adam, my 13 year old son, doesn't play with toys much anymore but he's still interested in some things, like toy cars and vehicles.  He's always had a thing for moving machines and I doubt that desire will ever leave his blood, regardless of his age.  Toy State has some fun Cat Job Site Machines that are great for children who are interested in vehicles or interested in what it's like to operate a CAT machine.
Adam received a CAT Job Site Machine from Toy State.  There are four machines available for sale at Amazon.com, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target.  Adam got the Bulldozer and has been mighty impressed with it.  The construction vehicle resembles what a real CAT bulldozer would look like and is much more than a toy vehicle.  There are four buttons on top for interactive play.  One of the buttons plays jammin' music, another turns on working headlights, and the others allow the construction machine to move backwards or forwards.  The bulldoze piece even lifts up and down.

What Adam likes about this toy is that it does more than just move back and forth.  He can have hours of continuous play and it moves over mildly rugged areas.  I like that it is so detailed and made of quality plastic.  I also appreciate that batteries are included so it can be played with as soon as it's taken out of the package.

Win It!

One person will win a CAT Job Site Machine Bulldozer.

Crooked Arrows - DVD Review

DVD Synopsis:

You’ll stand up and cheer for this feel-good sports thriller starring Brandon Routh (Superman Returns). The ancient sport of lacrosse has been part of their tribal heritage for centuries, but the Native American players on the Crooked Arrows high school team are long-time losers. When former star player Joe Logan (Routh) agrees to coach the rag-tag group to seal the deal on a lucrative casino project, he sets out to turn the chumps into champs and, in the process, learns the value of loyalty himself. If the Arrows can learn to shoot straight and challenge their prepschool rivals, these fast-breaking warriors may just pull off the ultimate upset and win it all!  Crooked Arrows will be available on DVD and Blu-ray October 23rd.

My Review:

I don't generally pick movies with sports as the center theme when I'm looking for a flick to watch.  In spite of that, I'm glad I watched Crooked Arrows with my family.  The plot is pretty predictable but it's a movie that has you rooting for the underdogs and feeling victorious in the end.  I was intrigued that the film revolved around lacrosse, a sport that you don't see many movies about.  My 14 year old sports-obsessed son was particularly indulged by this movie and has recommended it to several of his teenage buddies.

The Most Dangerous - Children's Book Review

Book Synopsis:

Dangerous animals from all over the world gather for the Most Dangerous Animal of All Contest. Snakes, spiders, sharks . . . who will the winner be? Deadly poison, huge teeth, razor -sharp horns, and fearsome feet are just a few of the ways that animals kill. Predators mean to kill. Prey simply defend themselves. And yet, the unexpected most deadly-animal doesn’t mean to harm at all!

My Review:

Filled with illustrations of terrifying animals, The Most Dangerous revolves around a contest where dangerous animals vie to win a trophy.  The animals explain why they're dangerous and why they should win to the judges.  You'd be surprised at who is the most dangerous of all!  In the Creative Minds section of the book is educational material on dangerous adaptations, how animals use adaptations, and a map that lets readers know where dangerous animals live around the world.

The Most Dangerous is a Fall 2012 book release from Sylvan Dell Publishing.

Monthly Menustral Flow Maintenance - #KotexMom

Over the past few months I've been discussing periods and preparing for them to my tweens.  The time will come, any day now, when two of my step-daughters will start their periods.  It's a life transition that I want the girls to be prepared for and not scared of.    U by Kotex has a website page for period questions that could be helpful for tweens and teens.  The Kotex site is also a great reference to prepare for your talk with your daughter.  I've browsed both sites with the girls and found an abundance of information, tips and advice on what to do to prepare for menustral flow and how to take care of it when the time arrives.  I've used the information on the websites to get recommendations on how to explain monthly maintenance and how to deal with mood swings.  I've also explained the importance of hygiene and changing pads when needed.

Some of the things that I learned on the Kotex site and talked to my daughters about was making sure they know to continue normal bathing routines.  Although there is a flow from down below, it should not deter them from washing and cleaning themselves.  I also explained that it's important to change pads frequently and always have extras on hand.  There's nothing more embarassing than having an overflow and not having extras on hand to freshen up.   I also explained that having an odor is natural.  This was the most concerning to my girls but I explained that it's not always the case and usually the odor will only be noticeable to them, as long as they continue to use proper hygiene and bathing practices.  We also went over the importance of letting me know when an accident happens that causes stains on their clothes.  I assured them I wouldn't make fun of them or cause a scene, but rather want to know so the problem can be solved quickly and the clothes can be laundered.

Because I've anticipated the upcoming changes in my tweens, I'm able to be more open with them and help them with any questions they may have.

I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by Kotex Tween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate. The opinions within this post are of my own. Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services. Your opinions and results may differ.

Wordful Wednesday - Haunted Forest

*If bloody zombie babies or killer clowns scare you, turn back now and don't read this post.  It contains pictures of things that go bump in the night.*

Last Friday was the Haunted Forest at the campground.  Several campers dressed up alongside creepy mannequins to scare the dickens out of anyone who dared enter.  I crawled on the wooded floor and giggled as people screamed their way through.  I had leaves and sticks in places they shouldn't have been by the time it was said and done, but it was so much fun.

This is my son, Adam, ready to jump out and frighten anyone who dared cross his path.

This is me cloaked in a black and purple robe with a face to match.

My nephew, Ozzy.........or is it a killer clown?!!

Off with its head!
