Camping....The End of A Five Year Hobby

Jason and I, after a detailed talk, have made the big decision to end our camping hobby. We will be putting our camper up for sale sometime this week. The decision didn't come lightly and I'm a little saddened by it. But more so, I'm ready to start a new chapter in our life.

We've been campers at Whispering Oaks almost every weekend for the last five years. We've forged many friendships and had some amazing times. We've also seen marriages decline and rapports fizzle. I promise, reality TV has nothing on Whispering Oaks.

After Jason's baptism yesterday (which I'll post about soon, YAY!) we discussed the pros and cons of camping. The close of the conversation came to the conclusion that it's time to move on. My sister, who camps next to me, is very saddened by the situation. I assured her she'd still see my face and I'd still be up to visit once in a while. Can't quit completely cold turkey.

There are several reasons why we came to this decision, with the top three being:

1. Camping is an expensive hobby. We pay campsite rent every month and make a camper payment every month. That's not to mention the activity fees and supplies we purchase every weekend. It eats up our wallet quickly.

2. Me and Jason are crazy on any given normal day, he more so than I. We won't apologize for being who we are. But we have kids we have to be examples to and a God to answer to.

3. I don't go to camp to be talked about or be surrounded by drama. I'm not on a soap opera and sometimes the plots play out much like one. I graduated high school a long time ago and don't want to keep up with the everchanging cliques and grade school behavior.

You could still pitch a tent and go camping once in awhile. Then you won't abandon it all together. It's a much cheaper way to go.

I have always thought it would be fun to do what you guys do. I suppose it's like the rest of life...there's good alongside the bad. Sorry it's the end of your regular camping thing, but I'm sure you'll replace it with some other interesting hobby to write about here! ;)
