Wordful Wednesday - World Fuel Alter Nationals

Last weekend me and Adam went with Jason to World Fuel Alter Nationals at Eddyville Raceway in Iowa. We spent Friday and Saturday there, while staying at a Super 8 hotel nearby during the night. My friend, along with her husband and daughter, went with us. It was fueled with lots of loud cars and spectators.
Jason raced his car and made it to second round on Saturday before being eliminated. Believe it or not, there's a lot of science that goes into drag racing. It's not head-on racing like some people perceive. If a car goes too fast or dials in a time on their car that isn't close to how fast they say it will go, that car loses. A car is also automatically disqualified from the get-go if they "red light", meaning they cannot go at any time before the green light. Even if it's thousands of a second.
Jason, along with several of the other drivers, keep a log book on hand of the speed and reaction times of their cars during each pass. They also keep track of wind, humidity, air altitude, and other weather conditions.
In addition to the regular races, World Fuel Alter Nationals was held over the weekend. The are the big dogs with LOUD cars and a lot of horsepower. Adam was stoked as he got to meet with a few of the drivers and get several posters with autographs. One of his faves was the driver of "Hot Rod From Hell".
Most drivers are extremely particular about their cars, and with good reason. It's a super expensive hobby and most cars have top-dollar paint jobs and parts. Adam couldn't have been more excited when a driver approached him asking if he'd liket to sit inside his car. Adam says it was easy getting in but a tight squeeze getting out.

The weather was perfect, the cars were awesome to watch, and the company was good. Couldn't have asked for a better weekend.

Have you ever been to a drag race?

I don't think we do drag races around here? I've seen them on tv, though, and they look cool.

We used to live by a drag strip and the weekends were so loud! This post certainly brings back some fun memories :)

You know when I was in HS we would go to the drags all the time. most of the boys would race.

I never knew about all that went into it.

What cool cars!

That's cool that he got to sit in the car!!

My bff in school (of course we didn't call them bff's back then, lol) had dad who used to race and we spent tons of time at the track. Fun stuff. :) That man's kids' kids race now, so I guess the time spent with him rubbed off (in a good way). ;)
