Wordful Wednesday - DRDC Roller Derby

Some husbands and wives play golf together. Some enjoy a night at the movies. My brother and his wife do things a little differently. They bond over Roller Derby.

Lanae has been on the DRDC Roller Derby team for a couple years now and my brother just recently became the Bench Coach for the team.

I attended one of the home bouts last year and got such an adrenaline rush from it. I was finally able to attend a bout this year on Saturday night. Me and my kiddo, Adam, made it a mother/son date night.

Dark River Derby Coalition (DRDC) competed against Crash Test Dolls in a zombies vs. unicorns bout. Some spectators rooting for DRDC showed support by wearing zombie makeup and people who were for Crash Test Dolls dressed as unicorns. The half-time show even featured Unicorn races.

I give huge kudos to the girls who do roller derby. They have to be watchful at all times and they take some major beatings. The bumps and bruises are quite evident. All monies raised from the bouts go to local charities or organizations.

My brother Donnie, otherwise known as Bloyd on Da Trac, used to be a referee during bouts but got promoted to Bench Coach. He has definite passion for the sport.

I'd like to say Donnie doesn't always look that scary but I'd be lying. Even our mother says she'd ignore him at all costs if she didn't know him. He has a "psycho on the loose" look about him. He's got a heart of gold though and would do anything for us. I'm proud to call him my bro.

This is a pic that would make a mama proud. The theatrics don't do him well and this is one of the most horrendous pics ever of me. Think I'm gonna have it blown into a full-size poster and give it to mama for Christmas!

There's one home bout left for the season and it's in October. I'm stoked to go back and watch.

My sister-in-law Lanae, also known as Lanaecious, also has a passion for the sport and gives it her all. She's a "no holds barred" kind of gal.

DRDC lost the bout but gave it a good shot. Have you ever been to a Roller Derby event?

Very exciting, and a complete adernaline rush. Our closest team is "the burning river roller girls".

I've never been to a roller derby, but I want to check it out someday. I know the circuit is big down in Providence, RI, which is fairly close to me.

I would LOVE to be on a roller derby team! I don't think we have any of them close to where I live though :(

I've never been. It looks like fun though.

It's great that they are loaded with pads. My Dad fell once skating when someone pushed him on accident from behind. He broke bot of his elbows. OUCH!
