Getting A Diagnosis On Shelby

Shelby, my oldest daughter, is 19 years old. She no longer lives at home (although most of her things stay there), she works two part-time jobs, and goes to a community college. Legally, she may be an adult. But in my heart, she'll always be my baby.

I don't like to see any of our kids ill or have to be subjected to medical procedures, but Friday I will be holding my child's hand as she goes to a specialist to have an EEG done. I'll be the strong one on the outside while my heart breaks on the inside.

As a backstory, Shelby used to have periodic blackouts and dizzy spells when she was in her early teens. Doctors passed it off and it wasn't such a hindrance in her life that it elicited an alarming response. Recently, though, the blackouts and dizzy spells have become more frequent. She's also passed out for brief periods several times within the last few months. A visit to the doctor garnered a referral to a specialist.

I've never had an EEG and have never been around anyone who has, but my research tells me that it's a harmless procedure in which electrical impulses from the brain will be recorded via electrodes. Shelby is not allowed to sleep for 24 hours prior to the test.

With much luck (and God's blessings) we'll be able to find out what's wrong with "my baby girl". Any and all prayers are appreciated.

I know exactly what you are going through and I do hope the doctor's can help your daughter. It is so scary. My 20 year old son has been having dizzy spells this year and passed out 2 weeks ago briefly. We are now in the process of getting heart tests done and then will go from there. We have been to many doctors also. Good luck and hope we both can find out why this is happening.

Praying for your beautiful Shelby. It's a shame that her doctors didn't take this seriously in her teens.

I have had a lot of them done and so has my mom, sister and husband, less stress than an x-ray. Very simple and pain free! Hope she is ok and they find out why it's happening.

I've had 3 EEGs and they're not painful at all. I hope the test gets a diagnosis for Shelby. Your family is in my prayers.

Prayers coming your way! My 3 year old son had to have an EEG a month ago. Very different for a 3 year old because, as you can guess, they do not want to lay still. As a parent, it is hard to see it happening to your child because all you want to do is wrap them up in your arms and keep them safe.

If you ever need to talk or want more info on EEG's please let me know. My son will go in a couple weeks for a MRI on the brain.

EKGs are easy compared to a lot of tests - better than a colonoscopy. Good wishes to you and your daughter.
