It's Official: I'm a Skater Tot!

I posted a couple weeks ago that I was going to take a huge leap and try out for the roller derby team. My brother is the coach and his wife is a roller girl. They nagged me enough that I went for it.

I'll admit, I was wary at first. I'm almost 37 year old, overweight, and out of shape. Who in their right mind would want me on their team?!! With lots of coaxing and support, I went to tryouts. And I loved it!

I grew up on skates and could spend hours circling the rink. That same feeling came back when I put on the skates for roller derby. It was exhilarating and refreshing to be back on the rink.

Roller derby is a brutal sport and I've quickly learned that to be true. It's much more than throwing on a pair of skates and bumping into a few girls. There's soooo much to learn and the workouts work muscles I didn't know existed. It's very time-consuming and expensive. There will be times when I'm living, eating, and breathing roller derby.

Dark River Derby Coalition (DRDC) is an actual charitable organization that abides by laws and guidelines. I will have to pass a strenuous physical and written test before I can bout. I will make no money for doing this. In fact, all monies raised go to local charities.

I received word last night that I was voted in to be a member of the team and I'm now officially a Skater Tot. After passing my tests, I'll be Fresh Meat. My skates came in the mail yesterday and I was like a kid at Christmas. The rest of my gear (knee pads, mouthguard, helmet, wrist pads, elbow pads) comes in next week.

I've barley started Roller Derby and it's already one of the hardest things I've done in my life. It's challenging me in mental and physical ways I've never endured. And I'm totally stoked to continue and become a full-fledged roller derby girl.
