Random Tuesday Thoughts - Mission Trip and Summer Reading

Yippee! It's another edition of Random Tuesday Thoughts, hosted by Stacy Uncorked. She'd love for you to link up and share your randomness.
--------------
Life's been pretty busy these days. I'd like to say it's because I'm exploring the ocean waters and smashing Jager Bombs, but that's just wishful thinking.
---------------
I signed up for the Summer Reading Program at our local library. My two teen boys did too. The more books we read, the more raffle tickets we earn for gift basket drawings. Right now I'm reading Contaminated by Em Garner. It's a YA novel about people who've become contaminated and act semi-sorta like zombies. It's pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Speaking of libraries, ours is pretty spectacular. A new one was built a couple years ago and I could spend hours in there, glossing over books and other materials.

Do you have any good book recommendations? I'm looking for some to pick up at the library. I'm up for most genres, with the exception of romance. If it's a Harlequin, I'm out.
------------------
My ears hate me. Simply put. I've had problems with them since I was a wee one. Just recently I lost most of my hearing. I found that reading lips isn't my forte. Off to the doctor I went. Both of my ears are severely infected and impacted. So, antibiotics and ear drops it is.
--------------------
In other doctor news, my mother just found out a few days ago that she's no longer in remission. The lung cancer has spread to her bones. More specifically, her spinal area. Between the doctor's impossible accent and my hearing loss, I didn't completely comprehend what he had to say about it all. What I do know is that mom will be starting daily radiation treatments again. Chemotherapy and surgery are not an option because she's too weak and ill. From what I gathered (although I hope I'm way wrong) the radiation is only for pain control. There's nothing further they can do as far as trying to rid the cancer. It's a disease that will eventually rob her. She's taken care of me her whole life, and it's been my turn to take care of her. I HATE CANCER! I HATE CANCER! I HATE CANCER!
-------------------

My son, Adam, went on a LoveTheLou mission trip over the weekend. He, along with a group of high schoolers, went to the inner city area of St. Louis and did lots of outside work that included moving lawns, tending gardens, staining decks, and more. He came back with such excitement and gratitude. The squelching heat and dirty work was beyond him. He loved being able to help others, and I really think it humbled him. Yeah, I'm a proud mama!
--------------
Me and Jason took off over the weekend and spent time with another couple at a campground. It was uneventful and I was quite all right with that. Jason got his relaxation from fishing and I got mine from sitting outside on the deck. I was able to recharge and rejuvenate. It felt good.
----------------
Happy RTT! What's your randomness for the week?

I signed up for that reading list for my boys and I as well. Mica's a huge reader. He always has a book in his hands.

Cancer sucks :( I'll be thinking of your mom in prayers for peaceful and pain-free days.

I'm reading a collection of short stories that are very interesting, sometimes creepy, sometimes sad, sometimes just plain strange. The collection is called Stories (not very original, right?!) edited by Neil Gaiman if you get the urge to check it out. I agree with you on the Harlequins---no thanks, I have this box of cereal here that I'd rather read! lol

That warms my heart about the mission trip!

My prayers are with your mom and family.

##$U@ cancer!!! I am so sorry to hear about your mother.

I am a big fan of Nora Roberts, but I am so far behind on reading that I have no idea what her latest would be. I like romance, but not the Harlequin kind - I prefer more epic Historical Romances.

What an amazing thing your son did!!! good for him.

We do the summer reading list here too. The last good book I read was All The Bright Places. I think it's a YA book. It does deal with some heavy topics- abuse, depression, bullying, suicide. But overall, it was pieced together beautifully. I just loved that book.

I love libraries! My favorite authors are James Patterson, Michael Gimenez, Phillipa Gregory, Jodi Picoult, and John Grisham. fiction, mystery, historical fiction, trending issues, legal thrillers. That's my cup of tea! Camping sounds like the perfect way to rejuvenate.

Oh dear, Terre! I hate hearing the news about your mother. Obviously, it's been a long time since visiting you. I'm hopping over from Stacy Uncorked a bit late this week. I will certainly be praying for your mother and the time you have together in this life. I had terrible problems with my ears as a child and although I haven't lost my hearing I do struggle to understand sometimes given the environment. I can relate somewhat to your frustrations. Saying a prayer that your infection clears up, too. Enjoy your summer and when you can I hope you'll stop by to read...10 get-to-know Cathy facts #A2ZRoadTrip #music.
