To help pet parents understand the health risks of dehydration, PetSafe brand has developed an infographic outlining important facts about pets and proper hydration. The infographic illustrates the recommended daily water intake for pets – one ounce per pound of body weight – as well as the steps to take if a pet becomes dehydrated.
“Dehydration occurs when fluid levels drop to less than normal, due to either reduced water intake or increased fluid loss,” Wallace said. “Always make sure your pet has access to plenty of clean, fresh water, especially when traveling or exercising with your pet, or whenever they’re outside for any period of time.”
Another way to ensure pets are receiving enough clean, fresh water daily is with the use of a pet fountain. Some pets, specifically cats, prefer to drink from a moving water source. Giving pets filtered, oxygenated water entices them to drink more and get the proper hydration that is essential to their health.

I knew that my pet needed plenty of water every day but I didn't know that the guideline was one ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. I also wasn't aware of the benefits of a pet fountain. I learned that fountains constantly circulate and filter the water so it stays cleaner and tastes fresher. I had been using a stainless steel water bowl for my dog but recently received the Drinkwell Everflow Indoor/Outdoor Fountain by PetSafe and Helen has been happily drinking out of it.
Inside of pet fountain
This particular pet fountain model is intended for indoor household use or seasonal outdoor use. It comes with a bowl with pump, a cord with anti-bite cover, float valve, charcoal filter, indoor plugs and washers, foam filter, and hose quick connectors.
The charcoal filter is meant to remove bad tastes and odors, while the foam filter traps larger debris before it reaches the pump.
Helen drinking out of her pet fountain
The pet fountain itself requires some assembly. The instructions were handy, but they're important to read thoroughly. Some of the pieces are for indoor use and some are for outdoor use.
Although we've had the pet fountain outside a couple of times, it's been mostly inside. Outside, it gets connected to a garden hose. A continuous, quiet stream of water flows out so Helen can get a fresh drink when she wants. Once she learned what the pet fountain was all about, Helen was very eager to drink out of it. I like it better than a standard water bowl and I'm pretty sure she does too.
One person will win a Drinkwell Everflow Indoor/Outdoor Fountain. (ARV $99.99)
