INVICTA Challenge's Flash & Thunder - Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
Have a kid who's interested in history?  Want them to be more involved in learning about American leaders?  Then INVICTA Challenge's Flash & Thunder would make a great gift for them.  A combination of an action figure, novel, maps, and operation packet, Flash & Thunder challenges kids to read and lead by immersing themselves in historical situations where they make decisions that determine success or failure.

Flash & Thunder tells the true story of a Native American Paratrooper, Turner Turnbull, during WWII and his role in the Allied invasion on D-Day.  The package includes a 108-page graphic novel written in a format where the reader chooses the outcome.  There's also two detailed maps and an operations packet with cards that feature information about Allied and Axis forces, their equipment and other scenarios to complete the mission.  After reading the operations packet and studying the maps, kids tackle the mission and play the role of Turner Turnbull, making the decisions he and others actually faced on D-Day.  A collectible paratrooper figure makes the play experience even more real.

A free INVICTA app contains a strategy game that continues the D-Day challenge.  The app is interesting and engaging but makes a lot more sense after kids read all the materials.  If they haven't done that, the app won't be as logical.

There's so much interaction with Flash & Thunder.  I'm a fan of this for so many reasons.  For one, it's based upon a real American hero.  Secondly, it makes history even more exciting and helps children understand what a war hero went through in battle.  The action figure is very detailed, with a hat, backpack, and gun as accessories.  The figure is also has moveable joints.  The novel gives children the option to choose different endings, and the maps help them tackle missions.  It brings history to a whole new level!

The apps are at a delay right now.  Once available the free app requires a tablet or computer and has to be downloaded.  Until then, the game can be played at invictachallenge.com/play/.  In the game, users have to make decisions and place squads in strategic places.  It's either a mission accomplished or a mission failed outcome.

INVICTA Challenge's Flash & Thunder became available November 2nd and is the first in a series of Leadership Decision Challenge boxed and app-based games.  Flash & Thunder is available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com and specialty retailers.

In honor of the first hero portrayed by Invicta Challenge in Flash & Thunder, the company helped create a Turner Turnbull Scholarship with the Chahta Foundation, a nonprofit that works alongside the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. The company donated a portion of its in-app sales to this scholarship supporting a Choctaw Nation student in his or her 2nd year of college. The company kicked off the scholarship drive with a donation of $1,000 at a Dec. 3 event in Durant, OK with the Choctaw Nation.
