How My Hair Did With Aluminum Foil Curls

Exhibit A

A few days ago while browsing through Facebook, I ran across a video of a young gal doing a tutorial on aluminum foil curls.  Never heard of such a thing before.  I hardly know how to comb my hair right sometimes, let alone make it look good, but I figured I'd give 'er a go.

As you can see in exhibit A, my hair is generally straight with a couple cowlicks in the back.

To make aluminum foil curls, you need a straightener and well, yeah, aluminum foil.  Start by creating small square strips out of the foil.

I was in somewhat of a hurry so I didn't get all methodical with the method.  The ideal situation is to twist a curl of hair around your fingertips, then neatly fold a square of aluminum foil over that piece of hair.   Your hair should lay flat.

Because of my lack of time and patience, I had my aluminum foil dreads going in all directions.  And I didn't cover my whole head.  Ah well, maybe next time.

My hair was super soft that day and didn't curl around my finger very well to begin with.  I suggest that if you're going to try this, either lightly hairspray your hair first or do it on a day when it's a little dirty.

After you've covered your head in foil that's covering hand-made curl, take your heated straightener and press down on each piece of foil, going over it a couple of times.  Once you've heat straightened each piece, take out the foil.  I just had to gently tug to get it to come off.

The desired end result is lots of springy curls.  Mine didn't exactly turn out that way.  Then again, I didn't exactly do it the right way.  What I did find, though, is that my hair had more curl than before and lots more body.  So, as Mythbusters would say, this theory is confirmed - you can create curl with aluminum foil.

Have you ever curled your hair using the aluminum foil method?

Dino Treasures - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Just as some people dig and look for pirate treasure, some scientists dig and look for treasures, too. These treasures may not be gold or jewels but fossils. Following in the footsteps of Dino Tracks, this sequel takes young readers into the field with paleontologists as they uncover treasured clues left by dinosaurs. Readers will follow what and how scientists have learned about dinosaurs: what they ate; how they raised their young; how they slept, fought, or even if they ever got sick. True to fashion, the tale is told through a rhythmic, fun read-aloud that can even be sung to the tune of Itsy Bitsy Spider.
My Review:

Youngsters interested in dinosaurs will relish in the illustrations and stories of creatures past in the book Dino Treasures.  The words are in cadence, making the story even more fun.  Fossils, dung, and tracks have helped scientists become versed on how dinosaurs lived, ate, fought, and more.  This book shows how scientists have discovered the ways of the now extinct animals and what they've learned from them.  The "For Creative Minds" section in the back of the book explains the difference between a biologist and a paleontologist.  There's also an extensive section on how fossils have given clues of physical proof of dinosaurs' existence.

Dino Treasures is a 2015 release by Arbordale Publishing.

Bed Buddy Warming Bear - Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.   Your opinions and results may differ.
Snowfall and low temperatures mean winter is here to stay – and the last thing we need during the harsh weather is a sick person in our household.  Personally, when I don't feel well, I'm temperamental and want to be babied.

Designed with 100% natural grains in his belly, feet and hands, Bed Buddy Warming Bear can be used cold or hot to provide soothing comfort to a minor ache, or to keep you warm through those cold nights.
To heat up the bear, it needs to be warmed in the microwave.  It is important not to exceed two minutes heating time and you should check for hot spots before use.  Although the bear is a perfect warming companion for children, adults and seniors it should not be used on infants or people who are unable to remove it away from their body.  Bed Buddy Warming Bear should be laid flat, and not upright, when heating it in the microwave.

Bed Buddy Warming Bear is weighted due to the natural grains, so it stays in place wherever you put it.  Around its neck is an attached blue bow, and the bear itself is adorable.

I've used the Bed Buddy Warming Bear a couple of times when I've had minor aches.  Although it didn't rid the pain completely, it did minimize the hurt and it felt good against my skin.  My mother has used the bear the most.  She gets very cold very easily and having the heated bear against her skin helps provides warmth.

The Bed Buddy Warming Bear by Carex makes things more "bearable".

Animal Partners - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

From the “crocodile’s dentist,” to the “mongoose spa,” Animal Partners takes a whimsical look at symbiotic relationships of animals large and small. Although many animals live in groups of the same kind, here you will learn how some animals form unique partnerships with different species. After all, don’t we all need a little help from our friends?
My Review:

Told in rhythmical form, Animal Partners is a delightful book that shows the symbiotic relationships within the animal species.  Some of the partnerships are shown of animals helping and depending on each other and some show how one animal wins in a relationship by hurting another animal.  This is a book where children may not know right off hand what kind of animal partnership is being shown, but a further discussion after the reading will help them register and get the idea.  The "For Creative Minds" section in the back of the book is one area that helps children decipher because it explains the difference between "win-win", "win-stay the same" and "win-lose" relationships between animals.  There's also a couple of fun matching exercises where readers can match animal partners and animal habitats.

Animal Partners is a 2015 release by Arbordale Publishing.

Salamander Season - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

One cold, rainy, spring night, a young girl and her scientist father participate in “Salamander Night” to follow hundreds of spotted salamanders as they venture into a vernal pool to mate and lay eggs. Together, the father-child team studies the salamanders through their complete amphibian metamorphosis, culminating in the adult salamanders' disappearance into the woods in late summer. In easy-to-understand text, the girl relates the tale through her illustrated, photographic journal.
My Review:

While driving along one day, a girl and her father notice several salamanders emerging from hibernation.  Throughout a period of months, they return to the vernal pool to journal the life cycle of salamanders.  A couple of the amphibians are even returned to the father's lab for study.  They are observed during different growth stages.

Salamander Season shows both realistic and juvenile, undeveloped illustrations of salamanders.  It's a good teaching tool for children to learn the life process and behaviors of salamanders.  The "For Creative Minds" section in the back of the book enlightens children on Salamander Classification, Spotted Salamander Life Cycle Sequencing, and Salamander Nights.  There's also a page that talks about the author's experiences as an Environmental Biologist.

Kohl's Cares Disney Pixar Collection‏ - Review

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

When I walk into our local Kohl's store one of the first things I notice is the Kohl's Cares merchandise display. I'm drawn to it because the products are very affordable and monies from the sale of the collection supports children's health and education initiatives nationwide. It's a win, win!

The newest collection for Kohl's Cares is Disney Pixar.  From now until April 4th, Kohl's Department stores is offering exclusive merchandise from Disney Pixar for just $5 each. The new Kohl's Cares Disney Pixar plush and book collection is available now through April 4, at Kohl's stores nationwide and on Kohls.com.

Through the Kohl’s Cares program, 100 percent of the net profit from the sale of this collection supports children’s health and education initiatives nationwide.  Finding Nemo, Cars, Toy Story, Wall-E, Up, and Monsters, Inc. books and plush are available for purchase.

I received the Disney Pixar Cars Lightning McQueen plush and book.  The plush is simply adorable and looks just like the character from the movie.  The book is hardback.  The storybook is a fun read all on its own, but the plush gives an added touch. The books and plush would make wonderful gifts for small children. I'll be making a trip to Kohl's in the near future to purchase more merchandise from the Kohl's Cares collection to give as gifts for birthdays and upcoming holidays.

Have you ever purchased anything from the Kohl's Cares collection? Which Disney Pixar movie is your favorite?

There's the option to type in and search what you're looking for or click on a picture shown to learn more about it.  The visuals are stunning and the explanations are easy to understand.  Quizzes and videos are also part of what makes the site so interesting.  New content and functionality will be added throughout 2015.

The Ghost of Donley Farm - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
Rebecca, the red-tailed hawk, is not afraid of ghosts! One night, she bravely ventures into the barn to meet the famous ghost of Donley Farm. But when she finally meets him, Rebecca is surprised to discover that this “ghost” is much more familiar than she’d expected. Join Rebecca as she stays up late to talk with her new friend and find out what they have in common and how they are different.

My Review:

This book, with appealing illustrations, tells the tale of a red-tailed hawk who has heard stories of a ghost living on a farm.  Not afraid, the hawk sets out to explore.  What she finds is not really a ghost; it's a barn owl named Bernard.  The two then learn more about each other and how they're so much alike, yet so different.

The Ghost of Donley Farm does a great job of telling a story while also educating children on the similarities and differences between a hawk and an owl.  The "For Creative Minds" section in the back of the book has lessons on raptor diets, the difference between diurnal and nocturnal, raptor adaptations, and raptor fun facts.

Random Tuesday Thoughts - Trivia and Weight Gain

Hey, Mike!  Hey, Mike!  Know what day it is?  Nope, not Hump Day.  It's Random Tuesday Thoughts Day.

If you'd like to play along, link up your randomness at Stacy Uncorked.
--------------------------------
I swear, I had to have been a bear in my former life.  A big, fat brown bear.  Every single winter, my body resorts to foraging food and gaining weight while doing nothing else but sleep.  It's a vicious cycle.  I can't wait until Spring gets here so I can come out of hibernation, lose some weight, and not be in a constant sleep fog.
------------------------------
Saturday night I joined a team with five others for DRDC Trivia Night.  It's a fundraiser for roller derby.  Our team, Insane Brains, placed 2nd out of nine teams.  Not a bad finish!  Although, I'll admit that it was two members on the team that carried most of the weight.  I realized I'm not so smart.
-------------------------------------

Emma went to her first school dance last weekend.  She looked so pretty all dressed up.  Our youngest isn't so young anymore.
---------------------------
I received the best news last Thursday.  My mom is in remission!  Gone are the days of daily chemo and weekly radiation.  She still has lung cancer but the cancer is not active and it has shrank tremendously.  She's still weak but is gaining strength a little each day.  It's seriously a miracle.  Thanks to everyone who has kept her in their thoughts and prayers.

That's all I've got for randomness this week.

Do the seasons affect how you feel?  Have you ever taken part in a Trivia Night?

Esther: Royal Beauty - Book Review and Giveaway

I received product for review from Family Christian.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Book Synopsis:

When Xerxes, king of Persia, issues a call for beautiful young women, Hadassah, a Jewish orphan living in Susa, is forcibly taken to the palace of the pagan ruler. After months of preparation, the girl known to the Persians as Esther wins the king's heart and a queen's crown.

But because her situation is uncertain, she keeps her ethnic identity a secret until she learns that an evil and ambitious man has won the king's permission to exterminate all Jews--young and old, powerful and helpless. Purposely violating an ancient Persian law, she risks her life in order to save her people...and bind her husband's heart.

My Review:

Those familiar with the Bible likely know the scriptures that tell of Esther, although I must admit I had to go back to the Old Testament to recall the biblical account.  Although the book does well with weaving in the actual Bible story, Esther: Royal Beauty isn't a factual account and shouldn't be taken as such. But what the book does is weave scriptural report into a story of what Esther's life might have been like.

Esther (also known as Hadassah) starts out as an ordinary girl dreaming of riches and beauty.  She lives with her cousins who try to teach her humbleness and meekness, but that doesn't stop her of wanting bigger and better things.  She refuses to believe that the king is abusive and sometimes even wonders what it would be like to live within the royal palace.  When Esther is but a teenager and already set to marry someone else, she is captured by slave traders and is primped to become a woman.  Other girls are also captured and the same primping is done to them.  Esther catches the eye of the king and becomes the one he chooses as Queen.  It is some time after that the king sends out a death warrant for all Jews, not knowing that Esther and her cousin, Mordecai, are just that.  Esther draws up courage and approaches the king while facing possible death to save her people.

Esther: Royal Beauty is told from two points of view - Hadassah's (also known as Esther) and Harbonah, a eunuch.  Because the names are so close in visualization, I sometimes had to pause to make my mind click with who exactly was narrating.  Harbonah, the eunuch, has worked for King Xeres for some time and his point-of-view tells of what life was like inside the palace and what reasoning was behind some of the king's actions and behaviors.

Author Angela Hunt does a fantastic job of engaging the reader.  She writes the story in a way that allows your mind to be transported to the events and easily comprehend what's happening.

Trees: A Compare and Contrast Book - Review and Giveaway

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
Trees grow in many habitats, all around the world. Some trees are short and some are tall. Some grow in hot deserts and others grow on cold mountains. Some have leaves that are broad and wide and others are short and narrow. Some trees stay green all year round while others have leaves that change color. Compare and contrast the different characteristics of trees through vibrant photographs.

My Review:

With realistic photos and simple wording, Trees sharpens kids' minds with the different kinds of trees there are and how they look in various environments and elements.  This is a brisk read filled with beautiful photos.  The "For Creative Minds" section at the back of the book helps children learn more about trees with lessons on how trees help you breathe, how they become natural resources, and how they are important to animals.  There's also educational information on tree parts.

Valentine's Day At Scentsy Spring Sprint

If my sister EVER tells me I don't love her, I'll remind her of the time I spent seven hours at a Scentsy convention with her.

Don't get me wrong, I like buying Scentsy merchandise.  I'm particularly fond of their warmers and melts.  But I'm a customer; not a consultant.

Valentine's Day I traveled with her for 3.5 hours to Kansas City, MO to attend Scentsy Spring Sprint, one of many "tours" that were held by Scentsy.  I had no idea that there were so many people that were invested in the company.  I'm sure there were over 500 people in attendance just at this one particular convention.
Not to mention that my husband, her husband, and their 10 yoa son came along for the travels.  Only the guys hung out at an indoor water park.  I'm not sure who wanted to slice their wrists more.  Me of boredom, or my husband from having to listen to a trillion screaming kids.

The Scentsy Spring Sprint brought together consultants and their guests to learn how to throw successful home parties, get people to buy, and recruit for the team.  The actual consultants received boxes of Scentsy swag that were actually pretty impressive.

If it hadn't been for my sister and other friends I knew there, I would've lost my mind all together.  Don't get me wrong, there were a couple of wonderful speakers.  But the rest was just Blah, Blah, Blah, Yadda, Yadda,  Yadda to me.  Very little interaction, and a whole lot of talking.  I about tossed in the towel when we were asked to get out our crayons and color our goals, all while listening to meditative music.

As the picture above proves, I wasn't the only one who found the sessions to be a little dry.

I think the convention was wonderful for anyone who was straight out of the gate and has never, ever been an independent consultant for a home based business.  There were a few tips and pointers that were probably relevant to the novice consultant.  But, having been a direct consultant for other companies in the past, it was all stuff that anyone who's ever done that kind of stuff should already know.

No one ever talked about the merchandise at any of the sessions, but there were displays in the hallways of new and upcoming Scentsy products.  I've already started a budget.  There's a couple of warmers I've got my eye on.

As a side pitch, I definitely recommend my sister Traci as a go-to person for online orders or questions about Scentsy.  She's passionate about the company and its products.

Have you ever been a consultant for a direct sales home based business?  Are you familiar with Scentsy?

Softsoap Fresh & Glow Body Washes - Review and Giveaway

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Showering should be a time for stress-free relaxation, right? Yet believe it or not 67% of people are spending their time in the shower thinking about work and household chores*. (*The Scoop On Showering, MarketWired.com)  I'm guilty and consider myself a part of that percentage.

To celebrate the launch of the new Softsoap Fresh & Glow body wash line, Softsoap is challenging you to take back your shower. After all, the shower is the few moments you have to yourself each day to escape! Clear your mind, wash away your stress and take back your shower by using the new Softsoap Fresh & Glow body washes while listening to a relaxing playlist of your choice.  I've compiled a list of my favorite songs that help me relax.  I tend to lean more towards songs with vocals rather than white sounds.  What songs help ease your mind?

Heck Of A Relaxing Playlist

1.  Killing Me Softly - The Fugees

2.  The Hanging Tree - Jack Hawitt (also voiced by Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games movies)

3.  Sunday Morning - Maroon Five

4.  Thank You - Dido

5.  Hallelujah - Rufus Wainwright (can also be found on Shrek soundtrack)

Here to help you relax and make your skin feel good is Softsoap Fresh & Glow Body Washes.  There are currently two in the collection, the Hydrating Shower Cream and the Exfoliating Fruit Polish.

Softsoap BRAND Fresh & Glow Hydrating Shower Cream is made with 100% real extracts sourced from milk, coconuts and almonds.  It is formulated to lock in long-lasting moisture to hydrate skin, leaving it soft and radiant.

Softsoap BRAND Fresh & Glow Exfoliating Fruit Polish is made with 100% real extract sourced from kiwi and orange.  Its formula is packed with apricot seeds that exfoliate, giving you smooth healthy-looking skin.

I've used Softsoap's liquid hand soaps and body washes several times over the years.  I'm fond of the two new body washes added to their line.  I like the fragrances and the way my skin gets clean. The scents are true to what the bottles indicate. Softsoap Fresh & Glow Exfoliating Fruit Polish has tiny little beads of apricot seeds that are dispensed with the body wash.  It gives a light scrub to the skin, exfoliating it.  The Softsoap Fresh & Glow Hydrating Shower Cream has a creamy consistency and feels silky.  The flip-top lids are easy to open, and the body wash lathers up nicely. My family likes Softsoap because it doesn't irritate our skin and it gives our bodies a nice, clean feeling. It's not too feminine or too masculine.  It has a fair price point and can be found at mass retail, drug and grocery stores nationwide.

Lush Decor - Bedding Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
Not many rooms in my home are themed but my master bedroom resonates mostly with tribal décor.  The bedding set I'd had on my bed for years did its job and looked nice but it didn't necessarily match the rest of my room.

Recently, I was able to change out my bedding when I received the Tribal Dance 8 Piece Comforter Set from Lush Décor.  It matches my bedroom scheme so much better, and it has a very modern, sophisticated look.

The entire bedding set arrived in a large bag with handle and zipper.  Although I don't plan on putting away my bedding anytime soon, the bag is roomy enough to keep and store other items.  Constructed from brushed poly and plush, the comforter set comes with a king size comforter, oblong decorative pillow, square decorative pillow, a bed skirt, two euro shams and two pillow shams.

When I took the pieces out of the bag, they were not wrinkled and were ready to be put on the bed.  I love the way it all coordinates so well, and the animal skin design brings out color.  I don't have any pillows longer than regular size so the euro shams were too big for them but I've still kept them in use and just fold over the extra material when I make my bed.  The comforter provides warmth, without being overly heavy.  The entire set is quite lovely.

Lush Décor products have been seen at Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohl’s, Boscov’s, Sears, and other brand stores.  Their merchandise includes modern, fashionable bedding, shower curtains, window treatments, and more.
