Reading a bedtime story to your child is a perfect way to spend time snuggling together, and it also helps him or her wind down for the night. But did you know that those nighttime tales that you enjoy together can also help boost a preschooler’s brain development and language skills?

We all have fond memories of our favorite picture books from childhood and they’re still special to us – even today. Below are three beautifully-illustrated books that are sure to become a beloved part of the bedtime ritual for families from coast-to-coast. And each of these three authors decided to create and release their books through Amazon’s indie publishing platforms, Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) for e-books and CreateSpace for print, so that readers around the world could share the tales with their children.

Little and the Moon by Justin Gloe: Little embarks on an amazing adventure into dark caves, across misty lakes, and through the snowy wilderness as he searches for a friend – and finds one in the last place he expects.

The Girl and the Moon by Bella Woodfield: A small girl stares at the moon and wonders what it tastes like. Pizza? An ice cream cone? Grapes? So she sets out with her faithful toy companion to find out the real answer!

Go to Sleep Kitty by Kim Bourgeau: In this sweet rhyming story, a small orange kitten is very tired but doesn’t want to stop playing, even though Mama Cat says it’s bedtime.

It's Chuggington Fire Patrol Rescue Day!

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of m y own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Sound the alarm! The newest action-packed Chuggington DVD, “Fire Patrol Rescue,” has come  down the tracks, today on March 31st, from Anchor Bay Entertainment!

In this latest collection of Chuggington adventures, Wilson sets out on fire patrol duty with his new friend Asher and learns to use a fire hose in a rescue! Also, there is a friendly contest of Chug Patrol versus Speed Fleet; Hodge find himself in a high-rise jam; and all the Chuggers practice emergency drills at the roundhouse. In these six exciting episodes plus New Chugger Spotlights, a Bonus Badge Quest Episode, and coloring sheets Wilson, Asher, Brewster and the others discover the importance of community service and working together.

The DVD features six short episodes, with a total viewing time of 62 minutes.  Children who are fans of Chuggington, or of fire rescue, will delight in viewing the talking trains as they practice drills and put out fires.  Included with the DVD, Chuggington: Fire Patrol Rescue, is a limited edition train that resembles a fire truck.

In honor of “Chuggington Fire Patrol Rescue Day,” and to help keep your family and young trainees safe all year-round, here are some important tips from Firechugger Asher and the National Fire Protection Association:

· Asher says, “Plan ahead!”

Create a home escape plan so every member of your family knows what to do and where to go if there’s a fire. Designate a meeting spot, such as a tree or mailbox, that’s a safe distance from the home. And practice your home fire drill both at night and during the day.

· Asher says, “Stop a fire before it starts!”

Keep matches and lighters out of sight and out of reach from children. Store them up high, preferably in a locked cabinet or drawer. It’s also important to teach kids that lighters and matches are tools for adults only and that they should tell a grown-up if they see these items lying around.

· Asher says, “Cool it in the kitchen!”

Always keep an eye on the stove while you’re cooking, and use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on. Create a “kid-free zone” around the stove as well as areas where hot food and drinks are prepared. And make sure to keep anything that can catch fire, including oven mitts and towels, away from hot appliances!

· Asher says, “Sound the alarm! “ Smoke detectors are a key part of a home fire escape plan. Make sure to install smoke detectors on every floor of the home, especially inside and outside bedrooms. Don’t forget to test all smoke alarms at least once a month!

· Asher says, “Stay low and stay out! “

If, during a fire, you have to escape through smoke, get low, go under the smoke and close the doors behind you as you leave each room. It’s crucial to remind children that, once outside, they should never go back inside for anything, including pets or toys. It’s best to wait to call the fire department until you get outside and are a safe distance away from the fire.

Asher says, “Follow these blazin’ safety tips and you’ll be in control and ready to roll if there’s ever a fire.”

Random Tuesday Thoughts - The Death of Stuffed Animals

It's been a few weeks since I've participated in Random Tuesday Thoughts, hosted by Stacy Uncorked.  I actually kinda missed it.  If you'd like to play along, head on over there and link up.
Poor Paddington

My dog has an obsession with stuffed animals.  Don't dare leave them lying around.  They will be annihilated!

But, she does have a method to her madness.  The face always goes first, starting with the eyes and nose.
----------------------------------
We've been seeing an influx of snakes around my house.  They like to hang out on the east side.  I'm not particularly afraid of snakes, but don't like that they use my yard as their playground.
--------------------------
I took myself to the hospital the other morning.  Thought for sure I was having a heart attack.  It felt like an elephant and its cousin was sitting on my chest.  Turns out my heart is healthy.  But the muscles around my chest wall are inflamed.  It's a matter of taking it easy and ingesting some pills for a while.
-----------------------------------
Jason went to the specialist the other day regarding his varicose veins.  It's a good probability he'll need surgery to close off the veins that are no good so the blood can be rerouted.  But first, because of the wonderful insurance system, he has to wear medical compression socks for three months.  Which wouldn't be so bad, except it looks like he's wearing thick pantyhose.  If you recall the movie Mrs. Doubtfire where he/she lifts up her/his dress to show the hose, you'll know what I'm talking about.  If that wasn't enough to take my husband's man card away, the compression stockings came in a pink and white box bearing the image of a smiling woman.  My husband isn't a woman, and he sure isn't smiling about it all.  It's gonna be a long three months for him.
-------------------------------
Logan received his baptism certificate in the mail the other day.  For every person that gets baptized at our church, they receive a tshirt on the day of and a certificate and DVD of the baptism is mailed to them a couple of days later.
-------------------------------
One of my nieces turned five years old the other day.  Her parents had already secured a party setup at the roller rink.  But Zoe was adamant that she was having a bday party at her aunt Terra's house.  Being that I couldn't say no to her request, we held a small party at my house the day before her real party.  We fixed her up a feast of meatloaf, green beans, corn and potatoes, and cornbread.  My husband baked her a cupcake cake and she received a few gifts.  It felt really good when she exclaimed "This is the best birthday party ever!"  It was simple but, to her, it was perfect.

So, tell me, what's your randomness for the week?

Radical Redemption: The Real Story of Manny Mill - Book Review

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Book Synopsis:

"I could have been dead so many times. I always spent more money than I had, I was always in over my head, and I was always involved in too many things at one time...Everything I did was with me in mind." - Manny Mill

Descending into a life of debauchery, Manny Mill found himself teetering on the edge of personal and financial disaster.

In this candid and vividly personal book, Manny tells how his pursuit of pleasure led him to the depths of human despair. A declared fugitive of the law, he was running from the FBI when he ran into Christ and a life of radical redemption. Manny's experiences will thrill you. His faith will inspire you. And his words will challenge you to think about your life, your relationship with the God of the universe and your need for a radical redemption.

My Review:

It interests me to hear people's accounts of how they came to know and accept Christ.  Radical Redemption: The Real Story of Many Mill tells of one man's account.

Many Mill, a man born in Cuba, seemed to have some hardships as a child, but life was pretty bright for him as a young adult.  He was well-known as a dancer and he became a womanizer who thought only of himself.  In other words, he got caught up in the "fame".  Due to some bad choices, Manny spent time behind bars.  It was right before his sentence that he came to accept Jesus Christ into his heart.  Prison taught Manny lessons in obedience, and it gave him the time to learn more about God's word.  While in prison Manny turned his life around and became a minister and mentor to others.

There's a lot of speak of the people that Manny has encountered throughout his life and how they've affected his behavior.  Although I doubt this particular book will radically change anyone's life, I think Radical Redemption is a good account of how one person's life has been blessed by God and how a person can be saved no matter how bad they are deemed to be.

Purex Crystals ScentSplash - Review and Giveaway

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
Purex Crystals, first released in 2010, became a regular addition to my laundry due to how they provided an added boost of fragrance to clothing.  Now there's Purex Crystals ScentSplash, the next evolution laundry in-wash fragrance boosters.  The difference between Purex Crystals and Purex Crystals ScentSplash is that the first is crystals while the latter is liquid.  Both are great at infusing clothes with wonderful fresh fragrances.

Purex Crystals ScentSplash will be available for purchase in April and it will come in three scents - Fresh Mountain Breeze, Fresh Lavender Blossom, and Fresh Spring Waters.  They contain refreshing scent beads that release bursts of fragrance with freshness that lasts.  This new Liquid Crystals formula is convenient and versatile enough to be used directly in the washer or in-wash tray, and is safe for all wash fabrics.  I've found that one capful is plenty fine for each load.  Although I've only tried one scent (Fresh Spring Waters) I can say that I am fond of the fragrance and how it makes my clothes smell oh-so-good.

One person will win two free product coupons for Purex Crystals ScentSplash.

Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel - Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Me and my skin don't get along very well. It wants to stay dull and get old while I want it to look youthful and feel moisturized. I've been doing everything I can to give my skin, especially around my face, a younger, renewed look. Some products have worked for me, while others haven't given me the desired results. I can say that Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel has given my face a more refreshed look and glow.  It's not the Fountain of Youth, but it works well enough to appease me.

Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel is a vitamin-enriched formula that multi-tasks to provide a sheer and easy alternative to traditional foundation, primer, color corrector and powder.  Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel is water and transfer-resistant and is applied by patting onto the face, then blending out with fingers.  It should not be applied over moisturizers that contain silicone, as pilling will occur.

Available in five colors, Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel can be used under makeup as a primer, over makeup for the look of natural skin, or by itself as an alternative to traditional foundations.  A 1.0 FL OZ tube retails for $48, so it is a bit on the pricey side.  I've used the "Radiant" shade, which is brown in color, and it blends in well.  I've mainly used Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel as a concealer and primer.  I have normally dull skin and have noticed a suggestive positive change after applying Per-fekt Skin Perfection Gel.  The areas under my eyes don't look so tired and my skin doesn't look quite as shallow.  It goes on smoothly, blends easily, and helps disguise my fine lines.

Mom's Cancer Remission Celebration

My mother is nothing short of a living miracle.  She was diagnosed with lung cancer last year and fought quite the battle.  It got to the point that doctors were ready to call in hospice.  And now, here she is, alive and sorta well, with the cancer in remission.

With a donation from the local college basketball team through their Creating Memories program, mom was able to celebrate her remission with a family dinner at the Senior Center.  About 45 people were in attendance to honor mom and her courageous fight.  A bounce house was set up for the kids and a large meal was feasted on by all.
Great-niece, Ayala, jumping in the bounce house

My mom sitting between my two uncles

Although they live less than two hours away, mom doesn't get to see her brothers much.  It was a blessing to have B.J. and Curt come down for the festivities.

Me and my husband

Two of my girls, Emma and Juliann

The menu consisted of pulled pork, potato salad, cole slaw, corn on the cob and cupcakes.

Emma with her door prize win

A door prize drawing was held both for the kids and the adults.  Both were baskets created by my sister, made up of Scentsy products.

The kids were also treated to several games of Bingo and the winners were given prizes.

Other than it being a wonderful day of camaraderie, my favorite part was when my uncle brought out his acoustic guitar and played tunes for the audience.  He has a natural raw talent and a knack for bluegrass/folk music.  I could've sat and listened to him for hours.

My mom is still weak and requires a lot of care, but she's come back from some dark days and she's definitely a fighter.  I was honored to take part in her life celebration.

The Dovekeepers: A Four-Hour Limited Event Series on CBS - Review

This post was sponsored by sponsored by the Role Mommy Writer's Network.  I received compensation for this post.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.  This post contains an embedded video.  Photo credits courtesy of CBS Television Network.

CBS ANNOUNCES “THE DOVEKEEPERS,” A FOUR-HOUR LIMITED EVENT SERIES FROM EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS ROMA DOWNEY AND MARK BURNETT, WILL BE BROADCAST TUESDAY, MARCH 31 AND WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 2015

Based on Alice Hoffman’s Bestselling Historical Novel About a Group of Extraordinary Women Whose Lives Intersect In a Fight for Survival at the Siege of Masada in 70 C.E.

The project stars Cote de Pablo, Rachel Brosnahan and Kathryn Prescott in the title dovekeeper roles, Sam Neill as first-century Jewish scholar and historian Josephus, and Diego Boneta as a star warrior of the Jewish army at Masada. The series is based on Alice Hoffman’s bestselling, critically acclaimed historical novel about a group of extraordinary women whose lives intersect in a fight for survival at the siege of Masada.

Set in ancient Israel, THE DOVEKEEPERS is based on the true events at Masada in 70 C.E. After being forced out of their home in Jerusalem by the Romans, 900 Jews were ensconced in a fortress at Masada, a mountain in the Judean desert. Besieged at Masada, the Jews held out for months against the vast Roman armies. The project will recount the events from the perspective of a few extraordinary women who arrive at Masada with unique backstories, but a common bond for survival. Additionally, these women, who work together daily as dovekeepers, are all concealing substantial secrets.

Hoffman’s novel was published in 2011 by Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, earning the New York Times’ bestseller status and widespread critical acclaim, including being hailed by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison as “a major contribution to 21st century literature.”

I was given the opportunity to watch an advanced preview of The Dovekeepers, and was impressed with what executive producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey compiled.  I was previously an admirer of Mark and Roma's work with Son of God and The Bible, and they didn't let down this time either.

The Dovekeepers is a compelling story of three women who have strong secrets.  Aziza is a warrior and expert archer, Yael is an outcast, and Shirah is accused of witchcraft.  Their stories are woven around Mesada, a mountain fortress created by a king.  The story is beautifully written and the visual effects are stunning.  Some scenes in the series are harsh and in-your-face, and a couple of the love scenes are steamy (but not raunchy).  The three women's stories of survival will draw you in and the overall cast performances are unforgettable.  The settings felt like I was taken back in time.   Although I've already previewed this series, I'll definitely be watching it again on CBS March 31st and April 1st.  I highly recommend that you tune in and watch as well.

Will you be viewing The Dovekeepers when it airs on CBS?

Expect Beautiful Skin with Belli - Review

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Just so we're all clear, I'm not pregnant and the chances are slim to none that I will become pregnant. From first looks, one would think Belli skin care products are for new and expectant mothers. While that is certainly the case, Belli's line is also applicable to those beyond motherhood or for females who aren't into motherhood at all.

Belli skincare products combine efficacy, luxury, and most importantly, ingredient safety for expectant mothers and new moms. Belli supports expectant and new mothers through changing times by providing soothing, balances skin car products that pamper and protect. Their collections - Belli Pregnancy, Belli Motherhood and Belli Baby – consider the specific needs of each stage. I was able to assess some of Belli's products.

Belli Healthy Glow Facial Hydrator is a light daily moisturizer that is rich in botanical humectants that refine and soften skin texture. It provides the antioxidant boost of vitamin C and grapeseed oil for radiant, healthy looking skin. The formula is rich with soothing chamomile which helps neutralize skin irritants.

Belli Anti-Blemish Facial Wash is formulated with green tree extract, cucumber, and lemon peel oil.  It also contains lactic acid to cleanse and exfoliate acne prone skin.  It can be used daily.

I've been using the Belli Healthy Glow Facial Hydrator often and am pleased with the results.  It  softens my facial skin and makes it look more radiant. The Anti-Blemish Facial Wash body wash provides a pleasant smell and a clean feel.  I, as well as my two teen girls, apply it to our faces when we take a shower.   I like that the products don't contain any artificial dyes or fragrances and don't irritate our skin. Belli is a company that cares about all stages of life, from pregnancy to motherhood and beyond.

Colgate Optic White for a Brighter, Whiter Smile - Review

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Colgate has introduced a new revolutionary product to the Optic White line, and it's Colgate Optic White PLATINUM Express White Toothpaste.  This breakthrough formula is Colgate's fastest whitening toothpaste to date giving users whiter teeth in three days just by brushing.  The toothpaste contains two times more of the whitening ingredient, Hydrogen Peroxide.  Having a radiant and polished look is quick and easy with Colgate Optic White PLATINUM Express White.
I'm not vain but teeth and eyes are the first thing I tend to notice about a person. I love the beauty of white teeth and a nice smile. I also know the confidence that comes about from a pretty smile. I've struggled with the look and health of my teeth for a long time. Because of what I've been through, I take extra care of what natural teeth I have left and I also make sure my children (tweens and teens) don't skimp on oral hygiene practices.

Shelby, my 20 year old daughter, always gets complimented on her good looks. I may be bias, but I agree she's a pretty girl. She has a beautiful smile, but her teeth are somewhat yellow. She was super excited to try out the Colgate Optic White PLATINUM Express White Toothpaste.  With a fresh mint taste, this toothpaste deeply whitens below surface stains, for teeth that are brighter in a matter of days.  There's also the added benefit that this toothpaste protects enamel and contains anti-cavity fluoride protection.  Shelby likes how it makes her teeth feel sparkly clean and she's noticed a whiter smile.  I've also used this toothpaste and have experienced the same results.

In addition to Colgate Optic White PLATINUM Express White Toothpaste, I've been cleaning my teeth with the Colgate® 360°® Optic White® Toothbrush.  It is specially designed to whiten teeth by removing surface stains. Whitening cups hold toothpaste to help effectively remove surface stains for a naturally whiter smile, and polishing bristles help to whiten teeth by polishing away surface stains and cleaning hard-to-reach areas.  In addition, a cheek and tongue cleaner comfortably removes odor-causing bacteria.  I believe the toothbrush is a little more effective than a normal, everyday toothbrush because toothpaste sticks to it better and the bristles are designed to remove food particles from hard-to-reach areas.  The bristles are soft and don't hurt the gums.

After some use, Shelby and I have noticed that our teeth are recognizably whiter.  It's not so much that we'd be cast for a commercial but we have noticed that they are whiter than when we first started using the products. I'd say the toothpaste and toothbrush are worth buying if you want to see some improvement on the whiteness of your teeth without paying a large price for a professional whitening system.

Bunny's First Spring - Children's Book Review

I received book for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Book Synopsis:

When a bunny is born in spring, the world is green and new and full of hope. But as the months pass the breeze turns cold, the leaves on the apple tree fall, and the swallows leave the barn. The little bunny begins to worry that everything is dying.

Illustrated by New York Times Bestselling award-winning illustrator, David McPhail, Bunny’s First Spring celebrates the joy-filled rebirth and renewal at the heart of Springtime. As the earth thaws and the robins return to their nests, the little bunny discovers hope, transformation, and the miracle of new life everywhere around him.

My Review:

Spring has sprung!  And with it comes new growth and new beginnings.  With lovely illustrations, Bunny's First Spring is a comely book for a newly arrived season.  Younger children will delight in hearing of a bunny explore its surroundings and reveling in the novelty of a budding occasion.

Piper's Perfumery - Fragrance Mist Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Whether you are spending a day near the water or a night out with friends, smelling yummy is a must.   Piper's Perfumery mists are fun, flirty, and the perfect handbag addition.

Piper's Perfumery believes that every woman should have access to a full range of fragrances that allow them to express their attitude, mindset and lifestyle without breaking the bank.  I was able to test one of their fragrances, Moroccan Dream.  It is a tropical and fruity blend with top notes of Exotic Mango, Pink Grapefruit and Tangerine Sugar lead into mid tones of Tropical Melon, Orange Hibiscus and Juicy Mandarin, and end with dry notes of Sunrise Vanilla, Sensual Woods and Malibu Musk.  I liken the scent to a combination of fruity, floral, and sweet.  The fragrance is very feminine and noticeable, but not overpowering.

Piper's Perfumery fragrance mists are available only at Walmart stores and Walmart.com. I don't normally shop Walmart so that's kind of a downer for me, but I do have a good impression of Piper's Perfumery.  The price point is practical and I'd be up for purchasing some of their other scents.

Which of the nine collections from the Post-it Brand World of Color Collections is your favorite?  How do you use Post-it Notes to stay organized?
