Memory Boxes of My Mom

Jason getting all crafty and stuff

My mother passed away just a little over a week ago.  It's been the hardest days of my life.  I keep expecting that I'm going to get a call from the hospital, telling me she's been discharged and I need to come pick her up.  Losing a mom sucks, period.
I wanted to do something in remembrance of my mother but wasn't quite sure what.  After a lot of brainstorming, my husband came up with a Memory Box idea.

We headed out to Hobby Lobby and purchased ten shadow boxes, five of one size and five of another.  We also purchased the stuff needed to preserve flowers.

The larger memory boxes were made for mom's kids and my daughter.  The others were made for grandkids' families.

Jason preserved flowers from the casket spray or 9-1-1 floral arrangement.  Those flowers were put in to each memory box, along with a laminated obituary or funeral program.  Also included in each was a brooch that mom would wear.

The backing for each memory box was a shirt.  Jason cut up shirts that mom wore most often and fit them to the back of the frame.

This particular memory box is the one made for me.  The Crossing tshirt is the one mom wore when she was baptized.  It's also the same shirt she wore in to the hospital during her last admittance.

I think the memory boxes turned out beautifully and are a perfect remembrance piece of a life well lived.

What a great idea to honor your mom-- and how awesome that your husband is not only caring but crafty too! Your boxes turned out nice. I hope soon you can look at them and smile with fondness instead of sadness.

I love these memory boxes you made. It is wonderful that everyone was involved. I made one each about my mom and dad also. I keep changing them around. But you gave me some nice ideas.

This is great. I'm so glad you got different ones for everybody. She would be proud of you!

I helped with a non profit one year to make pillows out of the loved one's t-shirt, memory boxes, and we let butterflies go. It was for little kids that lost a loved one. :(
