Cookshack Spice Kit - Review and Giveaway

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
It doesn't matter if the grass is plush green or the ground is covered in snow, my husband loves to grill. He has one charcoal grill and one smoker, with the dreams of someday owning a premium grill. Cookshack is a company that manufactures premium pellet grills and owning one would be a dream come true for my husband.

When my husband grills food outside or even when he's cooking in the kitchen, he flavors foods with spices and sauces. A plain piece of meat can really be flavorful when the right spices are added to it. Cookshack also sells rubs, mixes, and sauces that my husband has been using almost daily since receiving them. Spicy Chicken Rub, Rib Rub, Brisket Rub, Chili Mix, and Spicy Barbecue Sauce made by Cookshack all contain a perfect blend of spices and herbs to enhance the flavor of meat.

My husband has been using the same chili recipe for years, rarely altering it. He made a stock pot of chili the other day and added in Cookshack's Chili Mix instead of his regular seasoning. Because he has a heavy hand and was making a lot of chili, Jason added almost half the bottle of Chili Mix to the concoction. It was superb! There was hardly any chili left at the end of the night. His chili was good before, but the Chili Mix brought it to a whole new level.

I don't care much for spicy foods or sauces, but my husband and teen sons are big fans of the heat. They've been adding Spicy Chicken Rub and Spicy Barbecue Sauce to their meats and like the added kick. I tried them as well and didn't find them to be so hot I couldn't eat them. I'd say they gave off a mildly hot flavor. The Rib Rub is my favorite of them all, but I can't say I dislike any of them. With Jason's fine cooking skills and Cookshack's tasty rubs and sauce, we've been eating like kings!

Win It!

Three people will each win a 5-Pack Spice Kit from Cookshack that includes Rib Rub, Brisket Rub, Spicy Barbecue Sauce, Spicy Chicken Rub, and Chili Mix.

My Life Lately - Ice Cream and Flowers

I've been keeping busy, busy, busy.  Which I suppose is good, considering it almost keeps my mind from going into unnecessary overdrive.

I purchased this pretty zippered pouch on Etsy from HautTotes.  I had bought one a couple years ago but used it so much that it was time to get another.  I seriously want E-V-E-R-Y single thing from that shop.  I love the prints and her work.
----------------------------------
I know it's only been a little over two weeks since my mother passed away, but the wounds are still so fresh.  I literally think about her every single day.  Sometimes it's just a few minutes, and sometimes I'm consumed by it.  #MissHerMuch

My sister and I went and picked out a tombstone for my mother the other day.  News announcement: Tombstones are ungodly expensive; Start saving your money for one now!  Because we're not made of money, we purchased a basic raised square piece.  It does the trick, and it beats the plastic marker that's out there now.

I received the proof from the monument company yesterday.  They spelled mom's last name wrong.  Luckily, it's not yet etched in stone.

I had a conversation with my 16 yoa son the day before I went to purchase the tombstone.  I just casually mentioned that I wanted to go shopping for one.  Later that day, Adam said he had to run to the ATM but didn't mention why.  Upon coming back, he handed me $100.  In his words: "Grandma took care of me all this time.  I want to take care of her now.  Here's money to go towards the tombstone."  Seriously about made me cry.  Okay, it actually did make me cry.
--------------------------------------
I've already sworn off Mother's Day.  I don't want anything to do with it.  It makes me ill to think I can't spend it with my mom.  Piss on it all.
--------------------------
I received my FOID card in the mail the other day.  I'm now legal to carry a gun and purchase ammo.  Whoot!  Whoot!
----------------------
I went bowling with some friends Saturday night.  Bowled a total of 109, which is actually good for me.
--------------------------------

My great-nephew, Harley, is five weeks old now.  He makes my heart happy.  My sister purchased adorable crochet outfits off Etsy and has been doing photo shoots every week.
---------------------

Me, Logan and Shelby stopped by Spoonwave the other day.  It's one of those shops that has a ton of ice cream flavors and even more toppings.  You pay by the ounce.  I couldn't do it again if I was actually trying, but I got my ice cream for free that day since my cup weighed 9.4 ounces, the "weight of the day".
-----------------------------

Logan and Ray planting a rose bush

Me and Logan spent a Sunday afternoon at the church helping plant flowers.  I don't have a green thumb and could kill a cactus, but it was somewhat therapeutic to have my hands in the dirt.
------------------------
Well, there you have it.  What's been up with you lately?  Are you any good with planting flowers?  What kind of toppings do you like on your ice cream?

Mamma Chia - Natural Food Review and Giveaway

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

A gal pal of mine is very mindful of her food. She reads labels religiously and eats as close to nature as possible. I'm not quite at her level but have been more mindful of what I put into my body. In fact, she's the one that introduced me to chia seeds and their benefits.

For those not in the know, chia seeds are the richest plant-based source of Omega-3s on the planet. An excellent source of dietary fiber, complete protein and antioxidants, both the Maya and the Aztecs held this ancient seed in high esteem for increasing vitality, strength, and overall good health.
Allyson with a Chia & Greens beverage

Mamma Chia revolutionized the beverage industry by launching the first chia beverage in 2011, followed by the first of its kind, innovative Chia Squeeze. They also have Chia Granola Clusters. The Mamma Chia Organic Chia Granola Clusters are available in three flavors - Wild Blueberry, Vanilla Almond, and Cinnamon Pecan.  Bursting with nutrient-rich chia seeds, whole rolled oats, wild blueberries or toasted nuts, each crunchy granola cluster is naturally sweetened with a touch of golden honey and rich molasses.

Each granola cluster is full of chia seeds.  Depending on which flavor you eat, there's also whole rolled oats, tasty berries, or toasted nuts.  Each is naturally sweetened with golden honey and rich molasses.  The bags are re-sealable, locking in freshness.

The Mamma Chia Organic Chia Granola Clusters are crunchy and tasty.  The chia seeds are noticeable and present but they don't beat down the other flavors.  They're a healthy snack that have been well-received.  My husband has thrown a few on top of ice cream and my 3 year old niece almost ate an entire bag herself.  And for the gal pal I mentioned earlier, she says they're A-OK as a tasty, healthy snack.
The latest in the Mamma Chia line is Organic Chia & Greens. These drinks combine chia seeds with veggies.  Flavors include Soulful Greens (Cayenne & Lemon), Love Greens (Beet & Ginger), Grateful Greens (Kale & Mint), and Joyful Greens (Ginger & Lemongrass).  They come in a glass bottle.

If you've never tried a beverage that contains chia, it may take some getting used to.  The chia seeds in the drink give it a thick, bubble-like consistency.  It's not bad; just different.

The Organic Chia Squeeze pouches contain fruit with added chia seeds.  As the name implies, they come in squeezable pouches.  Available flavors include Cherry Beet, Blackberry Bliss, Green Magic, Mango Coconut, Strawberry Banana, and Wild Raspberry.

My favorite from the Mamma Chia line are the Organic Chia Vitality Bars.  They are available in several flavors and combine nutrient-rich chia seeds with chocolate, crunchy nuts, fruit, pecans, and other good food depending on which variety you choose.

The packages of Organic Chia Seeds are, well, chia seeds.  I've used them as additives in smoothies.

Mamma Chia has taken chia seeds and added them to an assortment of good-for-you foods and beverages.    It's a simple way to increase the daily intake of essential nutrients to achieve a healthy lifestyle.
Win It!

One person will win Mamma Chia assortment that includes:

Organic Chia Seeds
Organic Chia Vitality Bars
Organic Chia Squeeze
Organic Chia & Greens

Baked Ziti - Recipe

During the week that my mother passed away, I had a steady delivery of meals from my Small Group.  One of those was Baked Ziti.  It was super delicious and everyone in the household thought it was a hit.  We liked it so well, I made some for supper last night.  It definitely won't be the last time we have it as a meal.  I used a recipe for Baked Ziti that I found online, with slight variation.

Ingredients:

1 pound dry ziti pasta (I used Penne pasta)
1/2 onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
1 cup cottage cheese
1 1/2 cups sour cream
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add pasta, and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain.

In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce, and simmer 15 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti, cottage cheese, sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remaining ziti, Parmesan cheese and remaining sauce mixture. Top with grated Parmesan cheese.

Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cheeses are melted.

Sport Squeeze® - Review and Giveaway

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
Our oldest daughter, Allyson, has made a huge lifestyle change within the last year.  She is conscientious of what she puts in her body and she works out most every day.  I received a Sport Squeeze® for review, and Allyson has been using it quite often.

The Sport Squeeze®, from The Original Squeeze Company, is a reusable squeeze pouch made for athletes and adventurers.  This 8 oz. pouch is perfect for power gels, smoothies and protein shakes.  Allyson uses it for her smoothies and takes it when going for workouts.  It works by taking off the lid and pouring in the desired liquid.  Then you put the lid back on and drink from the flip-spout.  The lid itself is hard plastic while the pouch part is made of silicone material.  A carabiner is included so you can attach the pouch to a backpack or whatever else you want.  To clean the Sport Squeeze® I use a bottle brush.  If you own a dishwasher, you can wash it on top rack. The Sport Squeeze® is available in only one color, royal blue.  Allyson seems to like this reusable pouch and how she can drink her smoothies during workouts by having it on hand.

Enlighten the Fck Up: An Inspirational Swear Word Coloring Book for Adults - Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
I joined the adult coloring craze last October and have been hooked since.  Coloring helps keep me focused and I find it to be therapeutic.  I don't have to think about anything in particular while I'm coloring, and my mind is free from clutter.

I have a decent-sized collection of adult coloring books and was recently able to receive Enlighten the Fck Up: An Inspirational Swear Word Coloring Book for Adults in PDF form.  This book is the masterpiece of Lacy Bloom, and artist I first came across in a Facebook coloring group.

finished page using colored pencils and Sharpie markers

Because I received the PDF version, I cannot vouch for the actual book itself.  I don't know the quality of the paper or the other makings of the book.  But, as for the designs themselves, I'm quite satisfied.

As you can imagine from the title, this particular coloring book has some illustrations with swear words in them.  However, not all of them do.  There's a variety of pictures to color, ranging from nature scenes to mandalas.

Do you own any adult coloring books?  What do you think about the ones with swear words?

Wordful Wednesday - Logan's Prom

Logan attended his first Prom on Saturday.  It was held in a hotel, with an afterparty at the YMCA.
Logan went to prom with a friend, Hadley.  It was the first time Logan's been in a tuxedo.  Pulled at this mama's heartstrings.

At the afterparty, Logan won several gift cards and a rolling cooler.

Simple Pleasures: Stories from My Life as an Amish Mother - Book Review

I received book for review from Litfuse Publicity Group.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

About the book:

Simple Pleasures: Stories from My Life as an Amish Mother (MennoMedia, March 2016)

Young Amish homemaker Marianne Jantzi invites readers into her family's life on the snowy plains of Ontario.

The mother of four young children and wife of a storekeeper, Jantzi writes about her daily routines and heartfelt faith with equal measures of wit and warmth. Sewing, cleaning, cooking, gardening, and helping to manage the store take up most hours in her day, but Jantzi finds time to pen columns for the Connection, a magazine beloved by Amish and Mennonite readers across the United States and Canada. Never sugarcoating the frustrations of motherhood, Jantzi tells it like it is, broken washing machine and bickering children and all. But through her busy days, Jantzi finds strength in simple pleasures of family, fellowship with her Amish community, and quiet time with God.

About the author:

Marianne Jantzi is an Amish writer and homemaker in Ontario, Canada. Formerly a teacher in an Amish school, Jantzi now educates and inspires through her "Northern Reflections" column for The Connection, a magazine directed mainly to Amish and plain communities across the U.S. and Canada. She and her husband have four young children and run a shoe store among the Milverton Amish settlement of Ontario.
My Review:

I've always been interested by the Amish and their ways.  I'm not so sure I could live like an Amish woman myself, but I admire the simplicity and the togetherness.

Simple Pleasures: Stories from My Life as an Amish Mother chronicles the everyday life of Marianne Jantzi.  Rather than reading about the Amish through second or third-hand accounts, this book tells how Amish live through someone who goes through it everyday.  It's a part of her life and culture, and Marianne does a fantastic job of bringing readers into her world.  While reading this book, I learned that we may have different ways of living, but a lot of our beliefs are the same.  Marianne shows her love of Jesus, family, and life in her words.  She takes time to be thankful and reflect on her blessings, which is what I think we should all do.  Included in the book are a few favorite family recipes, including Chocolate Chip Bars, Caramel Corn, and Alyssa's Simple Muffins.  There's also a small FAQ section where the author details similarities and differences within Amish communities.  If you are someone who is interested in how the Amish live their life, I recommend this wonderfully written book.

Memory Boxes of My Mom

Jason getting all crafty and stuff

My mother passed away just a little over a week ago.  It's been the hardest days of my life.  I keep expecting that I'm going to get a call from the hospital, telling me she's been discharged and I need to come pick her up.  Losing a mom sucks, period.
I wanted to do something in remembrance of my mother but wasn't quite sure what.  After a lot of brainstorming, my husband came up with a Memory Box idea.

We headed out to Hobby Lobby and purchased ten shadow boxes, five of one size and five of another.  We also purchased the stuff needed to preserve flowers.

Adam with his memory box

The larger memory boxes were made for mom's kids and my daughter.  The others were made for grandkids' families.

Jason preserved flowers from the casket spray or 9-1-1 floral arrangement.  Those flowers were put in to each memory box, along with a laminated obituary or funeral program.  Also included in each was a brooch that mom would wear.

The backing for each memory box was a shirt.  Jason cut up shirts that mom wore most often and fit them to the back of the frame.

This particular memory box is the one made for me.  The Crossing tshirt is the one mom wore when she was baptized.  It's also the same shirt she wore in to the hospital during her last admittance.

I think the memory boxes turned out beautifully and are a perfect remembrance piece of a life well lived.

Color Me Stress-Free Coloring Book - Review and Giveaway

I received product for review from Calendars.com.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Founded in 1999, Calendars.com brings together the latest Internet technology with the world's largest calendar inventory to create the Web's biggest and best calendar store. With Mother's Day coming up in the beginning of May, Calendars.com has a nice selection of calendars, games, puzzles, and gifts.

Last October I was introduced to the adult coloring book hobby.  I've been hooked since.  Coloring relaxes me and helps me focus.  My mother, up until she passed away, also found coloring to be therapeutic.
page inside the book

I was able to review the Color Me Stress-Free Coloring Book, available at Calendars.com.  It's different than a lot of other adult coloring books I've come across.  Rather than just be a book with pages to color, it divides those pages into themes with seven color coded sections.  The seven sections are Disorganization, Relationships, Finances, Work, Health, Time, and Travel and Commuting.  The images in the book are meant to serve as positive counters to those stressors.  There is a blank panel at the end of each chapter for you to draw and color your own image that is stress-relieving to you.

I appreciate how there are separate categories for the book, but it doesn't affect me one way or another with which page I color.  There are a variety of images for a person to color, ranging from mandalas and geometrics to spirals and abstract art.

There are some pages that have already been started with coloring.  I prefer the pages that have no color and only design.  That way I can use the colors that I want for the entire image.

I'd prefer if the pages were perforated but there's still enough leeway on each one to carefully cut or tear them out without cutting into the design.  The paper quality the book is favorable for coloring pencils, pens, markers, and other utensils.

I have gotten much enjoyment out of coloring in this book.  Some designs are more intricate than others, but they're all skillfully arranged.  This coloring book would make a great gift for Mother's Day, or for yourself, as a source of relaxation.

GuruNanda Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser - Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Mother's Day will be here before you know it.  Show mom how much you love her with a GuruNanda Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser gift set, available for purchase at Walmart. It costs less than $20, making it affordable. And it's a gift that moms will be sure to like.

I recently had the opportunity to try this diffuser gift set. It includes the diffuser itself and a bottle of GuruNanda’s proprietary “Relaxation” blend.   “Relaxation” contains a soothing blend of lavender, grapefruit, basil and eucalyptus oils. The GuruNanda diffuser included in the gift set uses ultrasonic waves to work with water and natural essential oils, and produces mist for aromatherapy, humidifying and purifying the space. When the included natural essential oils are used with the diffuser, they are very relaxing, calming, and soothing.

The diffuser itself is white in color and features a color-changing LED light. The light can be set to run continuously or intermittently, and the colors come out the top portion. A push button on the diffuser turns it on and gives you the option to choose the color change. The diffuser includes an adapter to plug into an outlet. It is run by electricity, not by batteries.

The diffuser works by filling water at the top reservoir to the red line. You then add in three to four drops of essential oil.  Plug it in to an outlet and turn the power on for an enjoyable spa experience. Water mists come out of the top of the diffuser with fragrance from the oil. Instructions are included with the gift set, and they're easy to understand.

I am definitely sold on the GuruNanda Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser gift set.  I like it both for the looks of it and the benefits of it.  This set is available only for Mother's Day, so don't delay and purchase one for your mom at Walmart soon.  Get one for yourself while you're at it.

Green Tea Peel-Off Facial Mask - Review

I received products for review from 7th Heaven.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Spring is here! Do you have all the essentials for prepping your skin, maintaining it to look your best while out in the warm weather? 7th Heaven offers face masks and other natural skin care products to make your skin look and feel its best, all without breaking the bank.

Treat your skin to a drink of delightful green tea with the newest high performing, all-natural Green Tea Peel-Off Mask, which purifies, tones, and brightens complexions.  It also fights free radicals and removes toxins. The peel-away format makes the mask naturally exfoliating and helps remove dirt, oil and dead skin cells in one 15 - 20 minute session
Here I am wearing the face mask.  As you can see, it's not real noticeable.  It just looks like I have a thin layer of clear glue on my face.

The Green Tea Peel-Off Mask comes in a packet and there's enough in each packet for a one-time use.  The main ingredients in the mask are ginger, lemon, and green tea.

Before applying the face mask you should first cleanse your face with warm water.  Then you apply a thin layer of the mask over your face and neck.  Because it has a gooey consistency, I have to use my finger to get down into the pouch to get all of it out.  Once the mask is applied, you should let it set on your face for 15-20 minutes.  After applying it to my face, I can feel the formulation take affect.  My skin starts to tighten and feel firmer.  It almost feels like dry, cracked glue.

I let the mask stay on my skin for approximately 20 minutes, then peel it off.  I'm able to mostly peel off the mask in large layers but there are some areas where I have to gently scratch my skin to get the whole mask off.  I've learned the peeling process works better when you make sure your face is completely covered with the gel to begin with, rather than in big spots. When stripping the mask, it looks like dead skin or a bad sunburn flaking off. Once the mask is completely removed from your face, the final step is to rinse your face with water.

I have dull, damaged skin and wear makeup often so I'm impressed that the peel-off mask makes my skin feel super clean and firm. I can see visual results that are assuring and efficient.

Power of Prayer Thursdays - Week 23

I believe in a God that hears my prayers and answers them. I've witnessed the miraculous gift of answered prayer. And, I want to pray for you. I've started weekly Power of Prayer post every Thursday. We are now on week 23. If you are needing prayer in an area of your life, please leave a comment and I'll commit to pray for your need or request. You can be as general or as specific as you like. Whether it be for healing, salvation, finances, emotions, or another area of life, I'd like to lift it up in prayer.

As you know, it's been a rough time for me lately.  I'm still very grieved over the loss of my mother.  I'd appreciate if you'd keep me in your prayers regarding that.  Thanks.
