Tips To Teach Your Kids About 9-1-1

Becky posing as our cell phone mascot

I've been working as a 9-1-1 Telecommunicator for almost 13 years now.  I believe it is of utmost importance to teach your children how, when, and why to call 9-1-1.  Here are a few tips to help:

Location - Teach your child their home address and phone number.  Use worksheets to help them memorize the address and #.  Although we have advanced computer systems and can sometimes track location, it's not always possible.

Deactivated phones - Don't let your child use a deactivated phone that is no longer in service.  It can still call 9-1-1.  Be sure to remove the battery before giving little Johnny the phone to play with.

Prank calls - Instruct your child that it's never okay to prank call.  It ties up our lines and we have to assume there's an emergency.  If your tween calls and thinks it's funny to joke around, we will work to the best of our ability to find out where they're at and send an officer.  It's embarrassing to have an officer tell you about yourself in front of your other tween friends.

Eleven is not one -  Visually show your child how to dial 9-1-1.  A panicked child may become confused and look for an 11 to dial after the 9.  Let them know they need to push the 1 button twice.

Assurance - Let your child know that it's okay to call 9-1-1 if there's an emergency and the person on the other end of the line is there to help them.  Assure your child that the people responding (officer, fire, EMS) are there to help and not to be frightened by the sirens.

Stay on the line - Let your child know that it's important to answer all questions and stay on the line with dispatch.  We want to get all pertinent information and help calm the child.

Medical issues - Explain any medical issues you or anyone else in the household has.  Key them in on possible behaviors and reactions of those issues.  That way your child can tell dispatch what the possible problem is if they see mommy jerking from a seizure or see daddy almost unconscious from low blood sugar.

Role Play - Practice scenarios with your child.  Explain to them some questions that might be asked of them in certain situations.  It's just as important to go over this as it is a fire or tornado drill.

Do you have any other tips that might help a child learn about 9-1-1?

Press Out and Color: Butterflies - Review and Giveaway

I received book for review from Candlewick Press.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Book Overview:

This book of beautiful butterflies is full of press-out designs intricately decorated with foil and perfect for all ages to color in. Featuring ten unique designs, the press-out pieces can be slotted together to create bright and cheerful ornaments. These gorgeous butterflies are perfect to hang around the home and add sparkle to any setting.

My Review:

Illustrator Zoe Ingram has designed ten butterfly species to color and display.  Press Out and Color: Butterflies is a spiral bound book with a hardback cover and features ten species of butterflies.  The intricate designs are foil and it's up to you to color the butterflies in with your colors of choice.  I found that it's best to use gel pens because colored pencils don't show up very well and markers smear.  You will want to make sure one area is dry before going to the next or there is the possibility of smearing.  Some of the butterfly species includes are Painted Lady, Blue Morpho, Monarch, and Red Admiral.  There are small holes in each butterfly so you can hang your creations after you've colored them and pressed them out of the book.

My screened-in back porch is lined with handmade beading and a butterfly charm at the bottom of each.  Once I am done coloring all the butterflies in this book, I am going to hang them up in the back porch to go with the rest of my butterfly theme.

Win It!

One person will win Press Out and Color: Butterflies.

The Coloring Book of Cards and Envelopes: Summertime - Review and Giveaway

I received product for review from Candlewick Press.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Book Overview:

Get creative with this innovative coloring book full of beautifully designed cards and envelopes to tear out and color. The twenty-four summertime designs include seashells, flowers, dragonflies, and more and are perfect for all ages to decorate and send or give to family and friends. Take inspiration from nature, or experiment with unusual colors and different materials to make each card truly unique! With enough blank space inside for a message, envelopes to customize, and cute stickers to seal them, this is the complete creative package.

My Review:

I know that technology allows us to communicate quickly, but sometimes it's nice to receive snail mail.  When I receive a card or letter in the mail, it brightens my day.  The Coloring Book of Cards and Envelopes: Summertime is a way to express your creative side, and show it to others.

Each page is made with high quality stock paper.  There are 24 cards and envelopes to color, and 24 stickers to seal the envelopes.  Instructions in front of the book show how to properly fold the cards and envelopes.  It's fairly easy, but younger children may need assistance.  The pages are perforated and tear out easily.  For each card, there is a "Colored for you by..." placement and there's enough white space to write a small message.  Gel pens, coloring pencils, and markers can be used on the paper and they more than likely won't bleed through.  Due to the thickness of the paper, I've been able to use whatever desired writing utensils that I want.  I've colored a couple of the cards and envelopes, and have sent them off to let others know I'm thinking of them.

Win It!

One person will win The Coloring Book of Cards and Envelopes: Summertime.

My Life Lately - Movies and Transitions

It's been a while since I've thrown a post in here telling what I've been up to lately.  I usually link up with Random Tuesday Thoughts at Stacy Uncorked, but I've missed the deadline a few times.  So, without further ado, here is what I've been up to:

Allyson, Juliann, Emma

Juliann celebrated her 17th birthday on the 6th.  We had a family meal at a local Mexican restaurant.  She started school yesterday and it's her last year.  Emma went back to school too, entering as a Sophomore.
----------------------
Adam turns 18 years old tomorrow (another official adult!).  He is moving into his own apartment early next week.  The place is super small.  Look left, look right, look straight.....that's the layout.  But it's cheap enough and maintained well.
--------------------------
I went with some gal pals to the theater and watched Girls Trip, starring Queen Latifah and Jada Pinkett Smith.  The people I went with thought it was hilarious.  I thought it was eh, okay.  All laughs were delivered by Tiffany Haddish, a breakout star in the film.  She carried the movie in regards to humor.
----------------------------
I also watched Annabelle: Creation at the theater.  Didn't love it.  Didn't hate it.  I like a good horror movie and I've seen some wackadoodles.  It was interesting, at least, to see how Annabelle became the source of evil via a doll.
--------------------

Chippy and his owner (aka, my bestie) came by to visit a couple weeks ago.  I've had to wean myself from seeing Alaina at least three times a week to seeing her once or twice a month.  I know, it sounds Single White Female-ish.  I swear, it isn't.  Just miss her, that's all.
------------------------------
Adam and I went to the local fair/carnival last Saturday.  One section is all the basic fair rides, fair food booths, and games with carnies.  The other section is more local, with quarter games and clubs selling food.  I used to enjoy going to the K of C but it's not quite what it used to be.  Me and Adam were there just short of an hour and were ready to beat feet.  Within that hour, Adam won a tshirt and $20.  He came out ahead.
--------------------------

I love to tent camp.  Sleeping under the stars to the sounds of crickets, frogs, and birds is a happy oasis for me.  Unfortunately, I can't find a lot of people as interested in it as I am.  Fortunately, Rhonda had last Monday off from work so she and I "roughed it" in her backyard.  We had a tent with an air mattress and fell asleep in there after staying up and gabbing till 4 am.  Her husband made us a home cooked meal of pork ribs and green beans, complete with (LED) candlelight.
------------------------------------
My sister is big into those online Pearl parties.  I don't know a lot about them, other than it's a jewelry business that opens oysters and reveals pearls live online.  It's not my cup of tea, but I am very happy with the ring she purchased for me as a gift.  It's a blue pearl surrounded with four diamonds. #SisterlyLove
-----------------------

Logan was going through his belongs yesterday and I happened to notice Ziploc bags full of random receipts.  He has kept EVERY receipt for EVERY transaction for the last two years.  I did a Life Skills Intervention and explained that tax documents and paycheck stubs should be kept.  Receipts to Hyvee and Wal-Mart from two years ago are not in the "Necessary Documents" department.  He's definitely a bird of a different feather.
-----------------------------------
So, how about yourself?  What have you been up to lately?
Have you seen any movies in the theater recently?
Have you taken part in any of the online Pearl parties?

Halfpops - Snack Review

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

When going through a bag of popcorn, I like to gather the half popped kernels and chew on them.  Halfpops is a company that knows there's others like me and they've invented half-popped popcorn snacks in a variety of flavors.  The snacks are crunchy, healthy, and portable.  Halfpops are bagged in three different sizes, and I received the individual snack sizes for review.

Currently, there are seven flavors of Halfpops available:

Black Truffle & Sea Salt
Caramel & Sea Salt
Angry Kettle Corn
Brooklyn Dill Pickle
Butter & Pure Ocean Sea Salt
Aged White Cheddar
Simply Sea Salt

To get a mix of opinions, I opened each individual bag and set them on plates to share with my Small Group.  Halfpops aren't a type of snack I'm normally used to, so it took a couple bites to let my mind and my taste buds get acclimated to the crunch, texture, and flavors.  The majority of Small Group really liked Halfpops, with Aged White Cheddar and Angry Kettle Corn being the top two flavors.  A couple of people said that Caramel & Sea Salt had a coffee flavor.  Brooklyn Dill Pickle was the least liked but there were a couple of people who enjoyed the pickle flavoring on their kernels.  I think the individual serving sizes are perfect for on-the-go and I appreciate that the snacks don't crumble and fall apart if they're packed in with other belongings.

Have you tried Halfpops?
What flavor would you be most interested in trying?

Revolution Foods - #RevolutionFoods Review and Giveaway

I received products for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

My husband and I like making big meals at home from time to time.  But, that's not always possible.  We may have events to attend or don't feel like spending a lot of time in the kitchen.

I recently received four Dinner Hero kits from Revolution Foods and they are perfect for when I'm hungry, yet crunched for time.

Fiesta Taco

The Dinner Hero kits come in four flavors:

Sesame Garlic
Coconut Curry
Smoky Tomato
Fiesta Taco

Dinner Hero kits come with the seasonings, spices, and rice.  It's up to you to add the protein.  Each kit has a suggestion on which protein to use but it's entirely up to you.  It' takes approximately 30 minutes to make a healthy dinner.  Dinner Hero contains no artificial flavors and it contains 42+ grams of whole grains.  The kits are made to feed four people.  Because we are big eaters, we found that it satisfactory feeds and fills up three of us.  I liked all four varieties, with Sesame Garlic being my favorite.  A clever component of the kits is that the cooking instructions are inside the box flap, cookbook style.  It also includes illustrations and tips.

You can find Dinner Hero near the boxed mac and cheese at your local Jewel-Osco store.

Revolution Foods was founded 10 years ago by two moms who wanted to change the way that kids eat in America. The company is a leading provider of healthy family meals across the nation, serving over 2 million school meals a week.  Revolution Foods donates 1% of their retails sales to schools to help provide fresh meals to students every day.

One person will win ten free product coupons from Revolution Foods.

Sunny Day: New Nickelodeon Animated Series

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Show Overview:

Preschoolers will be smiling and styling with Sunny and her friends in Nickelodeon’s brand-new animated series, Sunny Day, premiering Monday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. (ET/PT).  The series (40 episodes) centers on Sunny, a 10-year-old master hairstylist and entrepreneur who uses creative problem-solving to tackle any dilemma that arises in her seaside town of Friendly Falls.  The characters in the series celebrate individuality and self-expression, while the show's social-emotional curriculum highlights leadership, innovative thinking and teamwork.  Sunny Day is developed and produced by Silvergate Media (Peter Rabbit), and airs regularly weekdays at 10 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Sunny (Lilla Crawford) is a confident and creative natural leader who runs her own hair salon in the town of Friendly Falls. When adventure calls, Sunny sets out to save the day with her can-do attitude, salon-on-the-go Glam Van, best friends and colleagues, Rox (Elan Luz Rivera) and Blair (Taylor Louderman), and her dog Doodle (Rob Morrison).  Each episode of Sunny Day features a unique digital extension on Nickjr.com and the Nick Jr. App where kids and their parents can watch fun, live-action hairstyle tutorials that are tied directly to the hairstyles featured in each episode and narrated by Sunny.

In Sunny Day’s season premiere, “Stick With Me,” Rox and Blair accidentally get stuck together with sticky hairspray, and it’s up to Sunny to help them work together to get unstuck and save the day.

The first season of Sunny Day will feature celebrity guest stars including: Ashley Parker Angel (O-Town), Lance Bass (NSYNC), Kether Donohue (Grease Live, Pitch Perfect movies), Sutton Foster (Younger, Anything Goes), Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack), Adam Jacobs (Aladdin), Jamie-Lynn Sigler (The Sopranos, Entourage) and Shanice Williams (The Wiz Live!).

My Review:

A cute series mainly geared toward preschool girls, Sunny Day is catchy, perky, and appealing.  Each episode is a little over 20 minutes long.  Sunny is the main character of the show, with her friends Rox and Blair by her side.  Blair is always positive and organized.  Rox is full of adventure and is the best hair colorist in town.  Tagging along is Sunny's dog, Doodle, who can talk.

The storylines incorporate friendship, kindness, and helping others.  There's a lot of pink, yellow, purple, and light blue as the color scheme.  I like that you can visit the Style Files clips on Nickjr.com to view different hairstyles shows on real people, with Sunny narrating.  You can learn how to do a friendship braid, a Topi-Hairy, and more.

Be sure to tune in August 21st to see the first episode of Sunny Day!

Barbie Cruisin’ Corvette R/C™ - Review

I received product for review from Toy State.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Barbie is over 55 years old and is still going strong.  It seems that almost every child is familiar with the iconic doll.  I'll admit that I like watching to see what new things come out for Barbie.  One new item is the Barbie Cruisin’ Corvette R/C™  from Toy State, a leader in the manufacture of radio controlled vehicles and construction toys.

Kids can take Barbie on the road trip of her dreams with the Barbie™ Cruisin’ Corvette R/C. Exclusively designed and styled with chrome paint in the iconic Barbie™ hot pink, this car fits any size Barbie™ doll and features full-function forward and reverse RC action.
This R/C car requires several batteries that are not included.  Two AAA are required for the remote and five AA are required for the car.  That seems like a lot of batteries but it's a lot of fun to play with, so that makes up for it.

The remote control is pretty easy to handle and maneuver.  There is no on/off switch.  It will turn on automatically when you move the stick.  There are buttons on the undercarriage of the vehicle that will link the controller to the car.  The remote control has a large pink base with two buttons and a steering wheel.  Pressing one button will make the car go forward while pressing the other button makes it go in reverse.  Turning the steering wheel is what makes it move from side to side.

The details of the car are snazzy and a Barbie doll can fit comfortably in the seat.  In fact, another Barbie can go along for the ride in the passenger seat.  The Barbie Cruisin’ Corvette R/C has become a favorite among the young'uns that come over to visit.  I'm not going to lie, I've even toyed around with it myself!

Boss Baby - Blu-ray Review

I received product for review.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Movie Overview:

A new baby's arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator -- a wildly imaginative 7-year-old named Tim. The most unusual Boss Baby (Alec Baldwin) arrives at Tim's home in a taxi, wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase. The instant sibling rivalry must soon be put aside when Tim discovers that Boss Baby is actually a spy on a secret mission, and only he can help thwart a dastardly plot that involves an epic battle between puppies and babies.

Boss Baby was released to DVD and Blu-ray July 25, 2017.

My Review:

I watched Boss Baby with my teenage kids and thought it was interesting enough.  I'm not sure I'd see it again, but it was a good enough movie to watch once.  Some of the humor was ludicrous at times, while we belly laughed during other times.

The movie starts out with Tim, a child who is not happy to hear another baby is on the way.  When the baby does arrive, Tim imagines (realistically, to him) that the baby is wearing a business suit and has a crude wit about him.  Tim and the baby join forces to stop a conspiracy.  In the end, the siblings bond and decide they can live with, and even love, each other.

Have you seen Boss Baby?  What's your opinion of the film?

Where's Waldo? The Totally Essential Travel Collection - Review and Giveaway

I received product for review from Candlewick Press.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Book Overview:

Waldo fans setting off on their own travels will clamor for this compact collection of seven adventures, now adorned with a foil cover and offering six postcards to color. Featured are Where’s Waldo?; Where’s Waldo Now?; Where’s Waldo? The Fantastic Journey; Where’s Waldo? The Wonder Book; Where’s Waldo? In Hollywood; Where’s Waldo? The Great Picture Hunt!; and Where’s Waldo? The Incredible Paper Chase. Includes flaps and a handy elastic clasp.

My Review:

If, by chance, you're not familiar with Waldo he is a male character who travels the world and blends in with crowds.  His trademark outfit includes blue pants, a red and white striped shirt and stocking hat, and glasses.  In the Where's Waldo? books, it's up to you to pick Waldo out from a crowded scene.  If you are familiar with Waldo, then you already know that it's not easy to spot Waldo among the backdrop.

Take your visual senses on a journey with Where's Waldo? The Totally Essential Travel Collection.  This book showcases Waldo on several adventures.  Not only is it up to you to find Waldo, it's also up to you to find many other objects within the settings.  A fold-out flap is at the left of every adventure so you can see what exactly what it is you need to find.  For instance, you may be asked to search for a dog bone, a certain book, or a particular animal.  You can check off the box beside each item you find.

This book will keep you busy for hours, and it definitely makes you use your noggin.  Because the book is smaller, the figures and pictures are on a more stunted scale.  It makes looking for specifics  more of a challenge.  There are six black and white postcards included.  They are intricate in detail, and you can color them.  Send the postcards off to your friends and have them search for Waldo and other items themselves.

Win It!

One person will win Where's Waldo? The Totally Essential Travel Collection.

Colgate's New Toothbrush Encourages Kids to Take Charge - Review

I received products for review from Colgate.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.

Parents everywhere understand the struggle of teaching their kids to be self-sufficient. In honor of back to school, Colgate just launched their latest items in their kids product portfolio, the Interactive Powered Toothbrush.

I know all too well the importance of oral hygiene. I know because I didn't do so well with it myself and paid a hefty price. Sugars and acid eroded my top teeth and I'm now doomed to top falsies. That's why I harp to my kids the significance of proper brushing and healthy eating habits.  Anything that will give kids incentive and encouragement to brush their teeth correctly is definitely worth a try.

The new Colgate Interactive Powered Toothbrushes make oral hygiene more fun, teaching kids to be a better brusher with help from their favorite character's voices.  The toothbrush is available in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle or a Minions theme.

Depending on the theme, either a Minions or a TMNT character will speak to your child throughout the brushing process.  The batteries can be replaced, but the brushes automatically come with batteries in them.  There's an on/off button at the front of the toothbrush.

Once the toothbrush is turned on, the character talk during different times within two minutes and congratulate your child when finished.  One feature that I'm particularly fond of is that the characters tell your child when it's time to move to and brush each quadrant of their teeth (top left, top right, bottom left, and bottom right).  I think this is a fantastic way to get kids to brush all areas of their teeth.  Once the two minutes is up and your child has been congratulated, a character will remind your kid to power off the brush and will continue to do so until it's done.

The toothbrushes are fun, the characters are encouraging, and the overall design is child-friendly.  If these toothbrushes don't get kids excited about brushing their teeth, I'm not sure what will.

Sally Hansen Color Therapy Nail Color - Review

I received products for review from Sally Hansen.  The opinions within this post are of my own and I was not influenced in any way.  Please do your own research before purchasing products or using services.  Your opinions and results may differ.
To be honest with you, I'm pretty basic when it comes to my nails.  I've only been to the salon a couple of times for a manicure and I don't do so well with nail art so I rarely even try.  I have a fairly good collection of nail polish, but don't paint my nails on a regular basis.  The main reasons being that the polish doesn't dry fast enough and I make a big ole' mess before I'm done with all ten fingers. That, and I hate when nail polish chips within two days of application.  In other words, I'm lazy and don't want to deal with the hassle if I'm going to have to do it all over again in just a couple of days.  There, I said it.
When I do paint my nails, Sally Hansen is a brand that I have a favorable opinion of.  The company has come out with a fairly new line called Color Therapy.  Available in over 35 shades, this nail polish is formulated with argan oil to provide intensive nourishment and instant moisture for healthy looking nails.

The Sally Hansen Color Therapy nail polish, coupled with the Color Therapy Top Coat, lasts longer on my nails than many I've used in the past.  I can wear the color on my nails for a week and, even then, only the tips of my nails show any signs of polish coming off.  The two colors I have are very pretty and have the right consistency to ensure a pretty, polished look.  The added argan oil makes my regular nails feel nicer than usual.
