I'm sure almost all of us can recount where we were and what we were doing on that dreadful day of 9/11/01.  I was sitting on the couch and getting my kids dressed when I first saw the news.  My heart sank and my jaw dropped.  Years later, I still have the haunting images from the TV in my head.

9/11 opens in theaters on September 8 and features an all star cast including Luis Guzman (The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3), Gina Gershon (Showgirls), Wood Harris (Justified), Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge (BBC), Welcome to New York), Olga Fonda (The Vampire Diaries) and Bruce Davison (X-Men).

In the World Trade Center, a billionaire sits in his attorney’s office awaiting a divorce hearing against his wife. In a west side apartment, a bike messenger kisses his 5-year old daughter and sings her “Happy Birthday” before leaving for work. A maintenance man gets dispatched to help a tenant with his lock. In an upper east side apartment, a young model musters the courage to break up with her sugar daddy. As random as random can be, these individuals step into a crowded World Trade Center elevator.

Wrapped up in their own world, they all ride silently hearing only the sound of the elevator giving notice of each floor. When the elevator stops on the 34th floor, it empties leaving only these five behind. Moments later ... their world changes as the collision of a jet into the North Tower incapacitates the elevator.

With no understanding of what has happened and is happening around them, these fives are forced to band together and fight against all odds to escape from the impending horrific collapse. During these critical minutes, a story of courage, faith, and the will to live unfolds.

I live on Long Island so 9/11 affected me very much. I am only a few hours away from NYC. I remember parents rushing to pick up their children at school in a panic that day.

I remember I had been sick for a few days and had just returned to work where all of the employees were huddled around the television for the breaking news of the attack.

it was my day off and my co-worker called to tell me to turn on the tv. I spent the rest of the day just watching tv from different spots around town.

I remember when they announced it on the radio, I was driving home from school and kept thinking how it was NOT a funny joke. I thought it had to be a radio show thing.

I will never forget that day! I was only in 9th grade, but I remember walking into English class and being so confused when seeing that TV. Sadly we watched the whole thing happen and a lot of my classmates had family in New York.

I was driving to work in Colorado when the first news broke on the radio that an aircraft had collided with one of the Twin Towers. I knew that a plane had struck the Empire State Building in the 1940's so I wasn't sure what to think. By the time we all realized what had happened it was decided to send everyone home for the rest of the day, for safety's sake. The rest of the day, two jet fighters from the air base circled endlessly overhead.

I remember seeing the events play out on TV, I couldn't believe it was real I thought it was a movie preview at first that it was fake. But realized quickly that it was not and I cried for all those affected for the rest of the day.

I remember I was home watching this play out on tv. We cried for the innocent victims.

I was at my new job, first day stocking shelves and the tv got loud as reports of first plane hitting the tower. At that time they hadn't realized it was a terrorist attack.

I remember how at first I didn't think much of it when my husband called me about the plane hitting the tower. But it didn't take me long to realize how devastating it actually was. Our girls were 5 and 8 at the time, I couldn't wait to pick my oldest up from school that day(the 5 year old didn't have school that day).

I remember being at work. I worked for a large insurance company at the time. I had walked downstairs to get something to eat and I saw it being replayed on a large screen TV. Anyone who was down there just stood there a watched. After I went back to my desk, it did not take long and the company sent everyone home. I remember wanting to go to school and pick up my daughter and just hold her.

I was working at a resort near Yellowstone and we had one tv for the entire place. I called a friend back home and he told me what was going on. Needless to say, everyone spent the day inside the bar, which is where the TV was.

I remember it as if it had happened yesterday. Talking with a customer in New York and having the phone line go dead suddenly and then seeing it on the news. Strange feeling, like a child who sees and does not believe.

I was sleeping in that day, but had left the TV on. I woke up to see the plane hit the second tower. I spent most of the rest of the day watching TV and crying. The only positive thing all day long was that my brother and his wife found out they were pregnant with their first child.

I was in college when this happened. I remember waking up around 9 and turning on the tv and thought we were watching a movie. It wasn't until we were changing channels and realized it was on every channel and it was real. I had a couple of friends who were from NYC. Campus shut down for the day and we sat with friends who were trying to get through to home to check on friends and family. Such a scary day and doesn't feel like it was 16 years ago.

I was in school when this happened but i remember coming home to my dad being upset and then showed me the news and i couldn't believe it!

Yes, I remember it well and know exactly what I was doing when I learned of it. It does not seem possible that it happened 16 years ago.

My sister was in town visiting and she was supposed to fly back home that afternoon. As all flights were suspended, we spent the entire day glued to the television.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was watching the Today show when they cut to live. I was so shocked, called my friend who's husband is a fireman. He assured me there is no way those buildings will come down even if a plane flew through them:(((((

Laura Lee said...

I remember each moment of it. I was talking to my mom on the phone and had Good Morning America on in the background. I saw the fire in the towers and all I could do was stare in shock. We were living in Base housing and all of the sirens went off. My husband ended up with orders to Iraq 3 times when we went to fight them.
