Book Overview:
How much does an elephant weigh? How do you know? How would you know if you didn’t have a modern scale? Six-year-old Cao Chong, the most famous child prodigy in Chinese history, faced just this problem! Chong watches as the prime minister’s most trusted and learned advisors debate different methods. The principle of buoyancy and a little bit of creative thinking help this boy come up with a solution.
My Review:
Cao Chong is a young child, but proves he's quite smart. He lays his eyes on an elephant for the first time when one is presented as a birthday gift. Many prestigious adults wonder aloud what the elephant might weigh. They try to come up with solutions on how to find the answer but they're fruitless in finding one that works. Cao Chong comes up with a clever idea and puts it to work, finally solving the riddle on how much the elephant actually weighs.
The 'For Creative Minds' section in the back of the book has instructions for a hands-on project on understanding buoyancy, and has explanations of what buoyancy is exactly. It also talks about the different kind of scales used to weigh objects and the geography of China, then and now. Children can also learn about the history of Cao Chong, who the book is based off of.
Cao Chong Weighs an Elephant is a Fall 2017 release from Arbordale Publishing
