I am a Bible collector of sorts. Within my bookshelves are Bibles of several versions and designs. The word of God is strong and mighty, and digging deep into the word helps us understand God's desires for us. I recently received an ESV Illuminated Bible for review and it's now a favorite among them all.
This particular Bible is cloth over board, with blue and gold colors on the front and back. There's also a sturdy slipcase that the Bible can be placed back in when not in use. The ESV Illuminated Bible is gorgeous and has a majestic tone.
According to the Illuminated Bible website, the practice of illumination (or adding decoration to manuscripts) dates back to the early fifth century and continued into the Middle Ages, when scribes, monks, and other artists used richly colored pigments as well as gold and silver leaf to add decoration, initials, and illustration to the pages of books and Bibles. The ESV Illuminated Bible reflects this practice. The designs by Dana Tanamachi are very well-drawn and bring the eyes in to verses and books of the Bible.
Although I'm not one to do Bible journaling, there is the option to do so in this Bible. The pages are thicker than a standard Bible and those who want to be creative can paint atop the illustrations. Space within the margins give users the option to write in notes, thoughts, or feelings.
The ESV Illuminated Bible has gold lining on each page, and there's a blue ribbon bookmark to keep your place. Because this Bible is somewhat heavy, it's one I keep at my house and use to read for personal reasons. It's not one I'd carry around to church or sermons. Because of its beautiful design and illustrations, this Bible would be a pretty addition to set out on a coffee table or display.
