About the Book:

Give your Christmas a makeover with this practical approach to help your family learn what it means to truly celebrate their Savior.

In the bustle of the Christmas season, it can be easy to get swept up in all of the things to do. But it's important to pause and remember that our priority should be to spend time celebrating Christ's birth and not forget to invite Jesus to his own party.

Christmas is far more than a celebration of an event from long ago or a modern holiday centered around shopping. Mindfully take time to listen to how God continues to speak through the Christmas story as the Gospel narratives centered around the birth of Jesus provide encouragement and revelation concerning the love of God and his wisdom for us today.

In Total Christmas Makeover, author and Bible teacher Melissa Spoelstra provides a practical approach for you and your family to turn your attention toward God's grace day-by-day as you prepare for Christmas. This 31-day devotional presents key scriptures, ideas to implement with each reading, and questions for reflection to guide you in rediscovering rituals, relationship, and rest to connect you more deeply with Christ this holiday season.

My Review:

Christmas is only a few short weeks away and people have started to prepare for the holiday.  While I love Christmas for the gifts and decor, I am more into it for the celebration of Jesus' birth and being together with family.  Total Christmas Makeover helps readers reflect less on the commercialization of Christmas and more on celebrating Jesus.

In Total Christmas Makeover: 31 Devotions to Celebrate with Purpose there are, of course, 31 devotions.  They are numbered by day rather than by date, so you can start the devotions when you choose.  The book is divided into three sections - Ritual, Relationships, and Rest.  For each day, there are verses, a short devotion, and a prayer.  There are also 'Questions for Reflection'.  For instance, you might be asked "How can you share the abundance of food God has provided to you as gifts to others?" or "How can you see God loving you extravagantly in the midst of difficulties lately?"  Each devotion also has a 'Practical Approach' with ideas, points, and tips.

Total Christmas Makeover is one of my favorite devotionals because it makes you think.  You don't just read a devotion and move along.  The questions and ideas make you stop and reflect on your life during the holiday season, and even throughout the rest of the year.  This book is great to read on your own, or share with a Small Group as discussion.
