Logan Made It on the Jim Fannin Show!

Up until a few days ago, I had no clue who Jim Fannin was.  And I'm still not super familiar with him.  But I'm going to throw out the Mom Brag card and let y'all know that Logan was given the opportunity to speak with Jim on his popular podcast.

For those not in the know, Jim Fannin is known as America's Zone Coach.  Jim has guided the careers of the world’s best professional athletes from 10 sports and business executives from 50 industries for more than 40 years.  In addition, he has coached individuals, families, relationships and students in simplifying and balancing their lives.  If you want to book Jim for a 1-hour session, you'll be out of pocket to the tune of $950! (I'd spend that money on something else, but that's just me.)

Logan's Jr. High Track coach (who has followed him throughout his school career) is a friend of a friend of a friend of Jim, and hooked Logan up with being on the Jim Fannin Show podcast.  Logan's segment starts at the 51:33 mark, and the talk lasts for about 15 minutes.  They go over Logan's running career, his goals for running in college, and motivational techniques for achieving those goals.  He even told Logan he wanted to do a follow-up interview in the near future.  Pretty cool, if I do say so myself!

In other news, Adam was pulled over and ticketed the other night for Unlawful Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor.  I'll talk about that later....

Have you ever heard of Jim Fannin?
Would you pay $950 an hour to be coached by an expert?

Live Fearless: A Call to Power, Passion, and Purpose - Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

*Sadie Robertson, bestselling author and star of Dancing with the Stars, has an important message for her generation: you don’t have to be held back by fear, anxiety, or loneliness anymore. In Live Fearless, Sadie takes you on a thrilling personal journey toward power, passion, and purpose as you live at the center of who God created you to be!

*Despite being more connected than any prior generation via technology and social media, today’s young people often feel more isolated and anxious than ever before. As they come of age in an uncertain world full of scary headlines and mixed messages, Sadie’s story of overcoming fear and anxiety offers hope. Through personal stories, practical insights, and creative solutions, Sadie marks a path toward freedom from fear, anxiety, and comparison.

*Written for teens by a teenager who has trekked through these relatable struggles, Live Fearless shows readers how God’s plans begin with freedom and only get better from there. Sadie equips young people to walk a very personal and powerful journey with God, to learn to answer life’s questions with faith instead of fear, to live without limitations, and to relinquish the effort it takes to try to control the world around them. This timeless and crucial message benefits from Sadie’s fresh, vibrant delivery, and young people will be drawn to her authenticity and relatability throughout the book.

My Review:

You'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't know the Duck Dynasty celebrities.  They're famous for the family-themed television show about duck calls, country living, and Christian beliefs.  Although I'm not a devoted fan of Duck Dynasty, I've watched their shows from time to time and admire that they stand firm in their religious beliefs.

A hardback book written for tweens and teens, Live Fearless is mostly written by Sadie Robertson, one of the daughters in Duck Dynasty.  I'm smitten with her compassion, kindness, and genuine attitude.  I was surprised to find that she has suffered from fear and anxiety, beings that she seems to have it all.

Sadie Robertson is wise beyond her years, but writes in a way that's relatable to teenagers.  She speaks of personal fears and qualms, and her devotion to family and God.  She gives practical advice to young adults on how to manage stressors, stand strong in faith, and be of Godly character.  I'm very comfortable with letting my teen daughters read this book.

This I Know: Trusting Your Unknown Future to a Known God - Bible Study Book Review and Giveaway

About This I Know:

In This I Know, Laura leads women through a 6-week Bible study focused on biblical truths about the trustworthy characteristics of God, helping them see how better knowing God leads to a life free from anxiety and fear and allows them to step confidently into an unknown future. The study also helps women better understand how we can grow in both our factual and experiential knowledge of God, the only kind of knowledge that can give true power.

Each week is broken into a detailed introduction, followed by six daily studies, with five including Scripture passages, teaching from Dingman, interactive questions, prayer related to the study, a space to write a prayer, and a journaling prompt. The sixth day serves as a day of reflection and an opportunity to review what was learned that week, with helpful questions to journal and think through an action plan.

Week 1: A Known God: How we can grow in both our factual knowledge of God and our experiential knowledge—the only knowledge that can give true power

Week 2: What Do you Really Believe?: How to move from thought to action in our beliefs

Week 3: Cornerstone: What foundation is our life built on?

Week 4: Our Eyes are on You: What to do when we’re staring into the unknown, facing giants and enemies too powerful for us.

Week 5: Regardless, You are Good: How do we respond when our unknown becomes the known we feared?

Week 6: I Will Remember: The significance of remembering in our relationship with God and our experience with fear and anxiety. Remembering what God has done changes our view of everything

About Laura Dingman:

Laura Dingman spends most of her time creating and leading worship experiences that help connect people with the story of God. She has served in vocational ministry as the Creative Arts Director at The Creek, a large church in Indianapolis, for over a decade. She loves to show people where their story intersects with God’s story. She is the author of Life Rhythms: Learning to Live in God-Centered Time and I Am Found: Quitting the Game of Hide and Seek with God and Others.

My Review:

I'll be honest, I'm not very good at reading the Bible in and of itself.  As much as I would like to, I find it hard to focus and understand what's going on within the scripture.  That's why I rely a lot on devotionals and Bible studies.

One Bible study book that I've been using is This I Know: Trusting Your Unknown Future to a Known God.  It has been a valuable resource for scripture, insight, prayer, and praise.  Taking half an hour to an hour each day and reading each day's lessons has brought me a lot of clarity.  I've also learned so much about myself and what God wants from me.

This book has so much more than lessons.  There's scripture to read, prayer and journaling prompts, and questions to ponder.  There's room on the pages to write your responses.  I'm going to keep this Bible study book to reflect upon in the future and during times of struggle.

This book will be most helpful if you take the time to read it, write in it, meditate on it, and pray over it.  Don't just skim the pages; Put them to use and apply what you've learned to your life.

Win It!

His Risk - Book Review

About the Book:

An undercover English DEA agent will do anything to protect the Amish girl he loves.
Calvin Fisher left the Amish community at fourteen and never looked back. Only his brother's illness can bring him back to Hart County. Now, as Calvin works to make amends, he meets Alice, a local nursery school teacher, and falls hard for her. But he has a secret that could threaten the happiness he's finally found.

Alice shouldn't like-or want-Calvin. He's English, has a questionable past, and an even more questionable job. Still, she can't help being intrigued. Though Calvin assures Alice that he's worthy of her, she's torn between surrendering to her growing feelings and steering clear of him.
When a sudden surge of criminal activity alarms the community and even targets Alice, Calvin fears that his double life has put everyone he loves at risk. As for Alice, she can't help but wonder if the brave and honorable man she's lost her heart to is far more dangerous than she could ever imagine.

My Review:

I like reading fiction books about the Amish community, and His Risk did not disappoint.  It takes the Amish and combines it with the world of the English.

This novel is about a guy named Calvin Fisher who is an undercover DEA agent.  No one knows this, and it brings about danger.  Calvin is involved with The Kings, a gang who deals with dope.  Calvin's brother gets cancer and Calvin goes there to help care for his sibling.  Alice, an Amish girl, lives across the road and the two meet.  Bad things start happening at Horse Cave, the Amish community.  Calvin and Alice work together to find out who's at the bottom of it all.

His Risk is a little different than the usual Amish genre that I'm accustomed to.  There wasn't a whole lot of suspense or surprise, but the characters are intriguing and the overall story is good.

Pitch Perfect 3 - #PitchPerfect3 Blu-ray Review

Filled with all-new musical performances,a hilarious gag reel,never-before-seen deleted footage and more, the exclusive behind-the-scenes bonus features make Pitch Perfect 3 a must-own film.

Now graduated from college, realizing it takes more than acappella to get by, all the Bellas return in the final chapter in the beloved series. After the highs of winning the World Championships, the Bellas find themselves split apart and discovering there are no job prospects for making music with only your mouth. But when they get the chance to reunite for a European USO tour, this group of awesome nerds will come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.

Oscar®nomineeAnna Kendrick(Pitch Perfectseries,Up in the Air)Rebel Wilson(Pitch Perfect series, How to be Single), Hailee Steinfeld(True Grit, Pitch Perfect 2), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfectseries)Anna Camp(Pitch Perfectseries, The Help), Hana Mae Lee(Pitch Perfectseries, TV’s “The Patriot”), Ester Dean(Pitch Perfectseries), Alexis Knapp(Pitch Perfectseries), Chrissie Fit(Pitch Perfectseries), Kelley Jakle(Pitch Perfectseries, 42), Shelley Regner(Pitch Perfectseries), Elizabeth Banks(Pitch Perfectseries, Hunger Gamesseries)and John Michael Higgins(Pitch Perfectseries, TV’s “Great News”)all return and are joined by all-new cast members including John Lithgow (Netflix’s “The Crown,”), Ruby Rose(John Wick: Chapter 2, Amazon’s “Orange is the New Black”)and award-winning producer/musician DJ Khaled.

My Review:

I'm just going to throw this out there, I've never watched the first two Pitch Perfect films.  There's no particular reason why, but I'm definitely going to watch them now that I've seen the third and final movie.  Even my husband, who I had to coerce to watch this movie with me, was glad he viewed Pitch Perfect 3.  We both laughed...a lot.

I'm a big fan of Rebel Wilson and totally want to meet her someday.  She plays Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect 3.  Although I think she's funnier in some of her other films, she cracked me up in this one too.  There is some vulgarity and crude humor in this film, so I would exercise caution in letting young children or tweens watch it.  The overall theme is of friendship, solidarity, and girl power.  I found most of the music to be catchy and even found myself singing some of the songs afterwards.  There's quite a bit of bonus material in the Blu-ray and I recommend taking time to watch it, especially the deleted scenes and gag reel.

Have you watched any of the Pitch Perfect films?

Rimmel London Breathable Foundation and Concealer - Review

I'm by no means a beauty expert and couldn't even tell you how to create a perfect smoky eye. I could definitely use pointers on correct makeup application. I do, however, wear makeup almost every day. I've tried many, many brands and shades. Although I'm not qualified to explain how to flawlessly apply makeup, I think I'm fairly well-versed in which brands are worth the buy.  I've been a fan of Rimmel London for a while now and was excited to try their new Lasting Finish 25HR Breathable Foundation and Lasting Finish 25HR Breathable Concealer.

The foundation formula is to be the lightest long-lasting formula available on the mass market. This special formula builds and blends with ease to ensure a flawless canvas with every application.  Available in 16 skin-true shades, the foundation has SPF 18 and a built-in ergonomic cushion applicator.
The concealer is available in six skin-true shades and minimizes imperfections.  It has a cushion applicator and is sweat resistant.

The overall coverage I get from the concealer and foundation is good.  I'm quite fond of the cushion applicators because I feel like I get more even coverage.  Although I'm still not much of a makeup artist, I like the feel and look of these two Rimmel London beauty products.

What kind of makeup do you usually wear?  Are you familiar with Rimmel London?

The Lizard Lady - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

Join the Lizard Lady as she cuts her way through thick Caribbean forests searching for critically endangered St. Croix ground lizards. Hunted to extinction on the island of St. Croix by invasive species brought by colonizing farmers, these lizards are now only found on surrounding islands in the US Virgin Islands. Readers learn that scientists can be women and that the day in a life of a scientist can be anything but boring. Co-author Nicole F. Angeli IS the Lizard Lady--can she help save these animals?

My Review:

A Spring 2018 release from Arbordale Publishing, The Lizard Lady tells of Dr. Nicole F. Angeli and her mission to save an endangered species - St. Croix ground lizards.  Nicole is an actual person and has actually worked with these lizards, but the pictures are illustrated graphics.

As the Lizard Lady goes throughout the forests and islands, readers learn about the endangered species and why that is.  Insights are given on how St. Croix ground lizards live.  Readers are also given a glimpse of what it might be like to be a scientist working with animals.

The "For Creative Minds" section after the story shows a map of St. Croix and Surrounding Islands and gives some information on that area.  More detailed information is also given on St. Croix ground lizards and their adaptations.

Mongoose are considered an invasive species to the almost extinct lizards and we learn why.  Finally, there's a section about Dr. Nicole F. Angeli, Herpetologist.

March's Monthly Trip to Iowa

Me and Rhonda at the Chrome Horse Saloon

Alaina can't accuse me of not being a devoted friend.  Ever since she moved to Iowa last July, I've made the three hour one-way trip at least once a month to visit.

For March, we brought another couple along with us.  We've all been friends for a while, but it was the first time for the other couple to visit since Alaina moved.

our fundraiser friends

We made it up there on Saturday and spent the night.  Our first stop was the Chrome Horse Saloon for some drinks and eats.  Bar/pub food is the best.

Later that evening we attended a Pheasants Forever fundraiser.  Jason and I don't even hunt pheasant but we sure supported the club that night!  It was raining money up in there.

fundraiser supper

If you've read my blog for the last year, you know how much I love the Stuff, Etc. store in Cedar Rapids.  I'm seriously not much of an in-store shopper but that place sucks me in.  Me, Rhonda and Alaina spent a good three hours in there Sunday.

It was Rhonda's first trip to Stuff.  We broke her in right!

I won't even begin to tell you what all I bought but it was mostly clothes.  Enough so that I had to clear out my closet to make room.  In my defense, I spent $81 on 43 items.  I found the ultimate bargains that day.

We bought so much stuff from Stuff that my Blazer was stuffed.

Until next month's Iowa adventure....

Disney•Pixar's COCO - Film Review

Film Overview:

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael GarcĂa Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

Disney•Pixar's COCO is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.  There are many extras, including deleted scenes, music videos, filmmaker commentary, and trailers.

My Review:

I can't quite remember which movie I watched in theater, but I recall seeing a preview for COCO before that film.  In all honesty, it didn't pique my interest.  When I received the film for review, I thought I'd give it a shot.  Boy, I'm glad I did!  The animation is fluent and expressive, while the story line is meaningful and flows so well.

COCO tells of a tween boy named Miguel who lives with his grandmother, Coco, and her descendants.  Miguel has dreams to become a musician but, for reasons told in the movie, there's a ban on any and all music.  This doesn't stop Miguel from rebelling and practicing music in secret.  When Miguel steals a guitar, he becomes a ghost that only the returning dead can see.

Miguel is then taken to a place where the dead dwell but he has to hurry up and find a way to get back to the land of living before he becomes part of the dead himself.  While there, he meets some quirky characters and has to turn a wrong into a right.

This film is intended for kids but adults will delight in it as well.

A Few Of My Recent Fun Purchases

I am a bargain hunter.  I get a natural high from finding cool things at great prices (or free!).  Here's what we've scored lately:

My oldest daughter and her husband are straight-up obsessed with Funko Pops!  They own close to 1000 of the collectibles.  I had only a couple in my possession and wasn't necessarily interested in starting a collection.  Well, I won a Dole giveaway and received ten Star Wars Funko Pops.  From there, it kind of took off.  Between me and Logan, we now own 28 of them.  That's nowhere near how many Shelby owns (and won't ever be!) but it's fun finding ones to add when they are on sale.

An older gal I go to church with makes beautiful wooden pieces and rag dolls.  When she posted this wooden sign on Facebook, I knew I had to have it.  It would have cost me $12 but I only had $9 on me at the time.  I've tried to pay her the remainder since, but she's declined.

Hy-Vee grocery store was having a great sale on Nabisco and Keebler cookies and crackers last weekend.  They were priced 5/$5.  My husband darn near pooped himself when he saw me walk in with 15 packages of snacks!

We went to the Stuff store when we were in Iowa.  Usually I go with my bestie, Alaina.  This time around, our husbands tagged along.  All was right with the world when Jason spotted a NuWave Oven, brand new in the box, for only $30.  They cost about $100 anywhere else, so it was a steal.

Boys and their toys!
Jason came home from GameMasters the other day with a Zombie Apocalypse crossbow.  He dignified the purchase by saying it was on sale.  I admit he got a pretty good deal out of it.  I suppose it'll come in handy if sh*t hits the fan and zombies take over the world.

This gun wasn't a purchase but rather a gift to my husband from a friend.  I've had a heyday with it.  The gun is designed to kill flies.   You pour table salt into the designated hole then shoot the flies by pulling the trigger.  To say I'm amused is an understatement.

Have you purchased anything fun lately?

Oliver's Otter Phase - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

What child hasn’t wondered what it would be like to be an animal, able to hop, fly, or slither with ease? After a trip to an aquarium, Oliver decides he wants to be a sea otter. Oliver tries to copy sea otter behavior at meals, while playing, during a trip to the store, and at bath time. However, during the course of the day, Oliver discovers that he just doesn’t have the same adaptations. Being an otter isn’t easy for a human. What’s an otter—we mean, a boy—to do?

My Review:

A Spring 2018 release from Arbordale Publishing, Oliver's Otter Phase tells of a boy named Oliver who decides he wants to be a sea otter after seeing them in an aquarium.  Oliver tries his best to mimic otter behavior but finds he doesn't quite have what it takes.

Throughout the story, kids see what otters eat and do when Oliver tries to act like them.  There's also Polaroid picture illustrations that show otters carrying out and performing in their natural ways.  I have to say that Oliver's Otter Phase is at the top of my list of favorite children's books.  It tells about otters in an engaging way, and Oliver is a kooky, yet adorable, boy.  The illustrations are also appealing.

The "For Creative Minds" section after the story has several facts on marine mammals, explains the differences and similarities between humans and otters, explains the differences and similarities between sea otters and river otters, and has a learning experiment on the way that Oliver uses tools as compared to sea otters.

Win It!

One person will win an Oliver's Otter Phase children's book.
