Book Overview:
Join the Lizard Lady as she cuts her way through thick Caribbean forests searching for critically endangered St. Croix ground lizards. Hunted to extinction on the island of St. Croix by invasive species brought by colonizing farmers, these lizards are now only found on surrounding islands in the US Virgin Islands. Readers learn that scientists can be women and that the day in a life of a scientist can be anything but boring. Co-author Nicole F. Angeli IS the Lizard Lady--can she help save these animals?
My Review:
A Spring 2018 release from Arbordale Publishing, The Lizard Lady tells of Dr. Nicole F. Angeli and her mission to save an endangered species - St. Croix ground lizards. Nicole is an actual person and has actually worked with these lizards, but the pictures are illustrated graphics.
As the Lizard Lady goes throughout the forests and islands, readers learn about the endangered species and why that is. Insights are given on how St. Croix ground lizards live. Readers are also given a glimpse of what it might be like to be a scientist working with animals.
The "For Creative Minds" section after the story shows a map of St. Croix and Surrounding Islands and gives some information on that area. More detailed information is also given on St. Croix ground lizards and their adaptations.
Mongoose are considered an invasive species to the almost extinct lizards and we learn why. Finally, there's a section about Dr. Nicole F. Angeli, Herpetologist.
