Alive: Gospel Sexuality for Students - Book Review

Book Overview:

In today’s world, it seems that everywhere we turn sexuality is being used for something. Whether it’s to encourage young women to buy a new lipstick or encourage young men to try a different brand of deodorant, young people today are constantly bombarded with all the ways sexuality is used to sell goods and services, gain attention and, ultimately, get what you want. But what if we used sexuality for something different? What if we used it for God’s glory?

In a new 10-week Bible study designed for small groups of high school and college students, Alive: Gospel Sexuality for Students (New Growth Press/August 2, 2018) encourages them to start discussions about sexuality and talk about the struggles they face while also empowering them to be faithful to Jesus with their sexuality.

Alive is designed to spark great conversations about sexuality between students and their pastors, youth workers, and parents. This study uses real-life scenarios along with key Scripture passages to show students how the gospel informs our understanding of sexuality and speaks to sexual struggles.  The aim of Alive is not to enforce sexual morality or focus on shame.  Rather, Alive meets students where they are and encourages them to live out of their identity as new creations of Christ and experience being truly alive because ‘Christ lives in me’ (Galatians 2:20).

In Alive, Harvest USA, drawing on their years of experience working with church leaders and parents, unpacks the rich truths of our identity in Christ and applies it to human sexuality. Using case studies about current sexual struggles including pornography, masturbation, premarital sex, gender identity, and more, students learn to understand their sexuality in the light of God’s Word and to approach these issues with biblical truth and compassion.

The perfect discipleship tool for pastors, youth workers, campus ministers, teachers, and parents, Alive gives teenagers and young adults a biblical, gospel-centered framework to apply to one of the most difficult areas for them to live out their faith.

My Review:

I have six kids that I've raised to be teens and young adults.  I've had my fair share of "the birds and the bees" talk.  I'm not embarrassed to discuss sexuality with my kids and am open to listening to them when they want to talk about it.  I also want my kids to turn to God for all aspects of their life, including sex.  With that said, I'm not blind to the fact that kids usually listen to their peers more than their parents when it comes to sexuality.

Alive: Gospel Sexuality for Students is a 10-week devotional that explores and studies several topics related to sexuality.  Because of its deep extensive content, I'd recommend it for students who are in high school.  The book should be used in a small group that is guided by a leader.  The book itself is divided into two sections - the Student's Guide and the Leader's Guide.  There is no homework to do but there are questions to go over with the group, along with Key Truths and Concepts.  Some of the topics covered are marriage, dating, masturbation, and homosexuality.  All areas explored are backed by verses and scenarios in the Bible.  I think an hour to an hour and a half of time each week is plentiful to cover that week's discussion.  This Bible study is a good resource to help older students openly engage and talk about sex  - the good, the bad, and the ugly - with fellow believers their age.
