The Pic She Wanted...And The One She Didn't

Me, Traci, Sandy, and Donnie

This was always mom's photo-taking conversation:

"Kids, kids.  Look at me.  C'mon, look at me."

"I'm being serious.  Stand up straight.  You know I hate when pictures have the head cut off."

"Look at me.  Look at me.  LOOK AT ME!"

"Stop putting your finger in Donnie's nose."

"Loooooook at Meeeee."

"Keep your tongue in your mouth."

"Move over.  You're blocking Sandy's face."

My mother, bless her heart, was a stickler about photos.  She wanted straight-forward poses and wasn't fond of candid shots.  We'd all have to be looking.  She'd throw a picture away if it came out with the top of a persons's head cut off.  Drove us about bat shit crazy.

So in the spirit of still driving her nuts in the afterworld, my siblings and I recently got together and took a "good" picture.  But not before taking some pictures with our tongues out and fingers in our noses.

We love you mom! :)  :)  :)

Mastermind - Game Review and Giveaway

Founded in 1922 Pressman Toys has been delighting families for decades with classic games such as Mastermind, Rummikub, Tri-Ominos and innovative licensed products.  I've heard of the Mastermind game before but hadn't played it until somewhat recently.  Now me and the teens play it fairly often.  Apparently it's considered one of the world's most popular games, and I can see why!

Game contents

Mastermind game console with built-in storage tray and code shield
108 Code pegs in 6 colors
30 Key pegs in 2 colors
Complete instructions
For 2 players, ages 8+, Mastermind is a game of strategy.  You have to use logic and deduction to crack a code in 10 moves or less.  The object of the game is to solve your opponent's code in fewer turns than it takes your opponent to solve your code.

For each game, one person is the Codemaker and the other is the Codebreaker.  The Codemaker takes four Code Pegs of any color they choose and places them in the code area.  It is then up to the Codebreaker to try to duplicate the exact colors in the exact way that they've been lined up by the Codemaker.  If the person guessing has gotten one right, a red Key Peg is placed.  A white Key Peg indicates that  Code Peg has been placed in the right color, but not in the right position.  This continues on until the code is broken or until ten tries have been made.  The player with the most points after playing the agreed amount of games is the winner.
To the very right are the Code Pegs that the Codebreaker needs to try to duplicate via logic and deduction.  In other words, they get 10 tries to place yellow, blue, green, and white vertically in the exact order as the code.

There are examples of how to play in the instruction manual and it's actually easier to understand once you've read the directions and played a couple of times.  A red pull-out storage tray is attached to the plastic game board so you can store all pegs when not in play.  It gets kind of tricky trying to pull the tiny pegs out of the holes, so I advise you be careful when putting them away.

Mastermind is a game that puts a person's thinking skills to the test!

Win It!

One person will win a Mastermind game.

Wordful Wednesday - Forrester Sister Date

hanging in the hot tub

Due to the difference in age between my mom and dad, and other marriages with the two, I'm sort of spread out in age with my siblings.  My sisters are 58, 56, and 52.  My half-brother is closer in age to me, only being a year and a half younger.

Sisters we'll always be...

I say all this because I'm very close with my sisters (two of them anyway) but I didn't grow up with them.  And now, being adults, we don't get a lot of together time.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving we decided to fix that and have our own "Sister Date".  We booked a suite at the Stoney Creek Inn and had such a good time that we want to start making it an annual event.

The "Sister Date" did include a husband and a 14 year old boy that stayed in the suite with us.  My oldest daughter and her husband also stopped by for a bit.  But the main focus was reminiscing and giggling with my two sissies.

George pretended he was embarrassed by our actions, but he low-key liked it.

I had such a good time.  I laughed and laughed most of the night.  My gut hurt from laughing so hard.  We didn't act overly stupid.  I think it was just being able to be together and not act uptight.
Sandy and Traci brought 16 bottles of wine.  I'm not quite sure if they thought we were going to intoxicate the entire hotel but that's a lotta wine!  To be honest about it (if I must) the three of us went through seven bottles.  As you can guess, we were a little schnitzled by bedtime. #DontJudge

free coffee and water bar
(We needed it after all the wine we had!)

It was simply a hotel stay hanging with the sisters and other family, but it was hands-down one of the best times I've had.  Love the memories made.

Mrs. Renfro's - Salsas and Sauces Review and Giveaway

More than any other food, me and my husband are most interested in delicious condiments, spices, salsas, and sauces.  I think it's because we like to add a variety of flavors to our food.  For example, pork chops can be enjoyed in a variety of ways if you dress them up with different tastes and flavor textures.  Mrs. Renfro's creates distinctive salsas, relish, peppers and sauces.  I was able to sample two of their offerings.

Black Bean Salsa - This hearty flavor-packed salsa is an ideal topper for baked potatoes, a zesty base for southwestern-style pizzas and makes a mean Black Bean Salsa Soup.

Ingredients:  Tomatoes, Water, Black Beans, Onions, Green Chile Peppers, Sweet Green Peppers, Distilled Vinegar, Jalapeno Peppers, Corn Starch, Salt, Garlic, Spices, Cilantro

slow-cooked chicken with Mrs. Renfro's Black Bean Salsa

I used a jar of Mrs. Renfro's Black Bean Salsa, chicken breast, and a few other ingredients to make a slow-cooked pulled chicken meal.  The blend of ingredients in the salsa combined with the chicken, shredded cheese, and sour cream created an amazing dish.

I'm one of those girls that believes cheese can make most anything taste good.  Mrs. Renfro's Nacho Cheese Sauce is oh-so-good, whether warmed up or eaten right out of the jar.  I chose to warm it up and pour it over tortilla chips.  Jason went an unconventional route and ate hot & spicy fried pork skins with the cheese sauce right out of the jar.

Some of the ingredients that make up Mrs. Renfro's Nacho Cheese Sauce are green Chile pepper, garlic powder, sweet red pepper, tomato, and onion.  In other words, it's a cheese sauced packed with a lot of flavorsome components.

The Mrs. Renfro's brand includes more than 30 salsas, peppers, relishes and sauces.

Win It!

One person will win two products of choice from Mrs. Renfro's.

Ten Reasons The SwampButt Underwear Gift Card Is The Best Choice For Christmas 2018

SwampButt Underwear™ offers electronic (virtual) gift cards for delivery via e-mail from its web site at www.swampbutt.com to anyone with an e-mail address located on planet earth. There are plenty of reasons why giving and receiving these types of virtual ‘cards’ are a good idea for the 2018 gift giving season. The SwampButt Underwear cards are especially good for the following reasons:

1.  Better than giving cash because unlike cash, these virtual gift cards are only good for SwampButt Underwear and cannot be lost, stolen or traded for intoxicating liquors.

2.  An actual plastic card needs to be registered in case of loss, and it will get lost creating zero value for anyone. What a pain in the SwampButt (Underwear).

3.  There is no time limit. The cards from SwampButt Underwear can be redeemed any time of the year through 2019.

4.  There are no hidden fees with the SwampButt Underwear gift card. The same is not true of many physical gift cards from banks, clothing stores or that coffee place that asked to stop mentioning them. So, whether buying a $5.00 card or a $500.00 card, the money the gift giver intends to give to the gift receiver gets got by the one so gifted the way the gift giver intended.

5.  Easy to send at the last possible minute or any other minute leading up to the last possible minute.

6.  The person receiving the card can select the color, size and style of SwampButt Underwear they prefer without having to reveal that their 38-inch waist is really a 52-inch waist to anyone.

7.  If you forgot to include someone while Christmas shopping, sending the virtual card will mean no one will know. So no hurt feelings or reinforced experiences based on childhood trauma; fewer trips to the therapist in the new year along with a dryer backside.

8.  Underwear is a necessity and most people wear it. Giving it is a way of saying you care about the state of your relative/friend/neighbor/co-worker/clergy/first responder/kids music teacher/scout leader/other kind of kids teacher/coach’s backside etc. and have thought about that persons rear a great deal. Very thoughtful of you.

9.  The SwampButt Underwear brand and label are very unique and will be a welcome surprise to the one who receives it unlike socks, ties, calendars or anything from a temporary kiosk at the mall. SwampButt Underwear is a company with a product that solves a real problem and answers the question, ‘is this a real company.’

10.  No awkward surprises forced ‘I love its’, griping in the car on the way home about a bad gift, Facebook posts complaining about the bad gift you later take down because ‘they might see it’, re-gifting, or trips to the mall for a return.

White Sheets to Brown Babies - Book Review

Book Overview:

Sakshi Press (March 8, 2018)
206 Pages

White Sheets to Brown Babies is a memoir of the life of Jvonne Hubbard, a little girl who was raised to hate minorities through the indoctrination of her father, who was the Grand Dragon of a North Carolina faction of the KKK. It includes tales of living through a lifetime of dysfunction, violence and terror at the hands of both her father and other nefarious individuals who would seek to perpetuate the cycle. More importantly though, it is also a story of how they did not succeed in this hateful quest, as Jvonne struggled on and through to the other side to embrace love, laughter and the pursuit of personal happiness. Part of this amazing transformation even led to her adoption of a biracial infant, an event that served both as a healing elixir to her soul and a grandiose “!#%& you” to all the ugliness that hate brings.

My Review:

You have to be living under a rock if you haven't noticed that there's a lot of racial divide going on right now.  It's nothing new, but has its moments of escalation.  It's my own personal opinion that some of it is unwarranted, with a small group of people playing the race card just because they can.  But there's also doings that are absolutely ungrounded, just based upon the race of a person's skin.  That truly saddens me.  As the saying goes, "We all bleed red."

I say this because White Sheets to Brown Babies is a story of racial divide and how one person chose to not follow in the footsteps of that hatred.  Author, Jvonne Hubbard, tells a real and raw account of her unstable and chaotic upbringing. This book talks about her father and how he was well-noted to be a racist.  But it also tells of Jvonne's alcoholism, family dysfunction, and other discontents.  The story doesn't end there, though.  Jvonne writes how she is a survivor and rose above all the cards she was dealt.

When I read the book, it was like I was listening to an account of a person telling their story.  The formatting of the story isn't perfect but Jvonne's story drew me in and had me rooting for her the entire time.  She's definitely the definition of a survivor!

Cozy, Snowy Cuddles - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

*Ages 0-4

*Winter is a fun time of year for little ones, and Cozy, Snowy Cuddles Touch and Feel will help children thank God for all His wonderful wintry gifts. The soft art, touch-and-feel elements, and sweet message will appeal to the cuddliest little ones, making this the perfect holiday gift!

My Review:

I'm all about promoting reading at an early age.  Although they may not be able to read the words themselves, quality time spent with little ones reading to them is an important foundation to early learning.

Cozy, Snowy Cuddles is a board book perfect for the littlest ones in your life.  Within the pages are illustrations of a young polar bear and other wildlife who show why cuddles and snuggles are the best.  Each page has "touch and feel" sensory, with different textures on one of the animals.  For instance, youngsters can feel the soft black fur of a wolf or the rubbery touch of a narwhal.

A simple storybook with adorable animal illustrations, this book will capture the attention of the very youngest children and create a "cozy, cuddly" experience.

Win It!

No Bake Eclair Cake - Recipe

finished dessert in a casserole dish

I never claimed to be a professional food blogger so pay no mind to the fair weather pictures.  I came across a recipe for an easy no-bake eclair cake from Buns In My Oven (her pictures are way better).  I made some for Thanksgiving and again for the church's Christmas party.  Went over quite well!

the first layer

INGREDIENTS

1 package graham crackers
2 packages 3.4 oz instant French Vanilla pudding mix
8 ounces Cool Whip, thawed
3 cups milk
16 oz. chocolate frosting

INSTRUCTIONS

In a large bowl, mix together the pudding mix, Cool Whip and milk.  Beat well.

Arrange graham crackers in a single layer on the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish.

Pour half of the pudding mixture over the graham crackers.

Add another layer of graham crackers and pour remaining pudding in top.

Add the final layer of graham crackers and spread with chocolate frosting.

Refrigerate for at least four hours before serving.

*Tip: Soften the frosting up a bit in the microwave to help it spread more easily.

finished dessert

Easy peasy!  And oh-so-delicious!

Googly Eyes - Game Review and Giveaway

I can barely draw a stick figure, let alone something of artistic quality.  Add in glasses that impair my vision and it's quite the hilarity.  If your drawing skills are amateurish like mine or you're proficient like Picasso, I dare you test your skills in the game of Googly Eyes.

A game for 4-16 players, ages 7 + Googly Eyes is a fun drawing game that tests how well you can draw while wearing vision-altering eye glasses.

Game Contents:

Colorful Game Board
Spiffy Tablet
Timer
162 Challenge Cards
1 Die
1 Pair of Glasses
3 Changeable Lenses: Easy, Medium & Difficult

The object of the game is to be the first team to successfully make it around the game board.  Players take turns drawing challenges for their team to guess.  Put on the zany, vision-altering google eye glasses and start to draw while your team tries to guess what you’re drawing.  The glasses come with three sets of lenses that range from Easy to Medium to Difficult.

To play, roll the die and move your playing piece the number of spaces shown.  The color of the space the pawn lands on determines which challenge to draw and which lenses are used.
The Challenge Cards have three different categories - Object, Entertainment, or Place.  Some examples of what you might have to draw are:  Mary Poppins, Guitar, Hello Kitty, Clown, and Popcorn.  Depending on what you have to draw, you will have 15, 30, or 45 seconds to draw that particular thing.  It's up to the drawer to illustrate the picture good enough for the teammates to guess correctly before the timer runs out.

To give things a twist, there are a few special spaces on the board.  One lets you choose the lens color and matching challenge color you want to use.  Another allows you to skip your turn and one makes you draw with your opposite hand.  The best space to land on is the one that lets you draw without wearing the wacky glasses.  Googly Eyes is lots of laugh-out-loud fun!

Win It!

One person will win a Googly Eyes game.

Personal Tips On How I Save Money

Purchased this NuWave Oven for only $30 at a consignment shop.  It normally sells for over $100.

There are some products and services that I will pay full price for just because I really like it or it's worth the price paid in full. However, I try to save money and pinch pennies in lots of ways. Here are some suggestions, ones that I use, to save money.

1. Plan your meals around whatever grocery items are on sale that week. - If tomato sauce, beans, and crackers are on sale then chili is one of the meals that will be served.

2. Get email alerts for stores you shop at. - Lots of times they will include discounts and savings for consumers signed up for the newsletters.
The Stuff Store in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is my absolute favorite consignment shop.

3. Get your clothes at yard sales, thrift shops, or on sale. - With six kids who grew quickly and stained things up, I couldn't imagine paying an exorbitant amount of money on something just for the name. My kids wear brand name clothing, but I always get them on sale, at a yard sale, or even as hand-me-downs from others.

4. Buy gifts for the holidays and special occasions when they are on sale. - I buy gifts throughout the year. If someone's birthday isn't for a few months but I've found something at a great price they'll like, I'll buy that item and store it in the closet until the occasion arises.

5. Use coupons - I keep my coupons with me at all times. Sometimes stores will have items marked down without putting it in the circular or announcing it. For instance, there will be a clearance price on toothpaste and with coupons I have on hand, I can get it at a very deeply discounted price.

6.  Download the apps - A lot of stores these days are offering discounts, coupons and freebies when you download their app.  I also receive text alerts from stores and, often times, receive codes for discounts from them.

7.  Sign up for birthday freebies. - Many restaurants offer free food of some sort when you sign up for their emails and enter your birthday.  My birthday is in just a few days and I've already received $5 from Kmart, free ice cream from Culver's, and a free large soda from AMC.

Are any of these tips helpful to you, or do you implement them already?
I'm interested in your tips. Do you have any that you think would be helpful for me?

What's That Smell? - Game Review and Giveaway

As the holidays approach, hosts everywhere are preparing menus and decorations to achieve festive and - lets be real - Instagram-worthy gatherings guests will rave about until next year. But amidst the food and frill, how do you ensure the FUN?! That's where What's That Smell?™ comes in: an Amazon Top 100 game challenging those brave enough to guess scents ranging from roses to rotting garbage and everything in between. Hosts won't have to worry about pleasing older or younger guests because everyone can play at once without the awkward moments other games may cause.

I enjoy playing games with my family, and we've had a blast with What's That Smell?   If you think your nose knows, put it to the test.  Use your sense of smell to test your nostrils through each round.

What's That Smell? is for 2 to 6 players, ages 14+.  Contents of the game include:
1 scorepad
48 Mystery Whiff Cards
1 sheet of Whiff Strips
6 cardholders
4 Stank Cards
4 resealable bags

Bacon, Pine, Vanilla, and Peach are much better smells than some that are on the cards.

To play the game, one person is elected as the StinkPin who acts as master of ceremony throughout the game and tallies the scores at the end of the round.  The StinkPin also selects the number of Mystery Whiff Cards in play and a sniffing time of 30, 45, or 60 seconds.

Each player should have a cardholder, a scorecard and a whiff strip.  They should also take a Mystery Whiff Card and open it to release the scent but not to where they can see the answer.  The timer is then started and each player gives their Mystery Whiff card a good sniff.  It is then up to the player to decide what the smell might be and what category is belongs in.  Then write down the funniest memory or association of what the smell triggers.  The game is done when all of the players have smelled all the cards.

The StinkPin gathers all of the cards and reveals the answers.  Players count their points as follows:

Smell Guess - You get 5 points if you guess the top answer and 3 points for the second and third answers.

Smell Category - You get 1 point if you choose the correct category (even if your smell guess is wrong).  There are seven categories of scents with some including Tutty Fruity, Just Plain Stinky, and All Things Chemical.

Smell Association - The group votes on whose smell memory is the funniest and that player gets 2 points.

The person who won the round picks a player of their choice to take 3 big whiffs of an outrageously stinky Stank Card.  The Whiff of Shame cards include Hot Chunky Vomit, Diaper Blowout, Extra Old Toe Cheese, and Smothered in B.O.  Trust me, none of them smell good!

Although we haven't used it yet, there's also a What's That Smell? app that can be downloaded.  The app keeps time and players get extra points for top answers on the app.  You can also use the app for the ReekCam to record the person sniffing a Whiff of Shame card.

It is important to just lightly brush the Mystery Whiff Cards, rather than scratching them roughly.  It doesn't make the scent any stronger if you scratch hard.  Rather, it will just take some of the scent off the card.  The four resealable bags are for the Whiff of Shame cards and those cards should be put in the bags when not in use.

Don't use a weak stomach as an excuse not to play this game!  The fun that comes from it is worth taking the risk - Will you end up smelling a flower or a fart?!

Win It!

One person will win a What's That Smell? game.
