Word Slam Family - Game Review

Game Overview:

Word Slam Family has all the fast-paced fun wordplay of the original hit game, but in a streamlined, compact format. This version includes 100 story word cards and 100 answer cards, with a total of 600 answer terms in four difficulty levels. It includes easier, family-friendly answer words suitable for families and groups with kids ages 10 and up. In this version, the die and timer is replaced by an app. Instead of using card holders, the two box halves are used as screens between the teams and the answer cards are played behind the screens. This game can be played both as an expansion to the base game and as a stand-alone game.

My Review:

When my kids come back to visit we usually get out games to play.  I love the quality time and friendly competition.  Adam came back from TN to visit a couple weeks ago and we broke out Word Slam Family.  It was a first for us all to play the game, but not the last time.  I've played it with some of the other kids as well.

Word Slam Family is an offshoot of Word Slam, but I've never played that game before.  It took a short time for me to understand the instructions but the game was fun to play once we got the hang of it.  I liken the game to charades but with words instead of actions.

Game play consists of two teams and each one competes to guess the same answer first.  There are seven categories to play from:
Animals, Plants, Creatures
Travel, Outdoors, History
Food & Drink
Movies, Music, Literature
Web & Social Media
Science, Technology, Religion
Emotions

The categories help players focus on what subject the word may be based upon.  The only downside that I personally didn't like is that players have to use their own stopwatch or phone to keep time.  I'm somewhat "old school" and would have preferred a timer be included with the game.  Other than that, Word Slam Family has been a fun game for the family.
