Whip It - DVD Review & Giveaway

Movie Synopsis:

The memorable heroine of Juno is back and scores huge laughs as Bliss Cavendar, a blue-haired misfit stuck in a tiny Texas town in Whip It, a coming-of-age comedy skating available on Blu-ray Disc with Digital Copy and DVD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Tired of following in her family’s footsteps, Bliss discovers a way to put her life on the fast track when she lands a spot on a rough-and-tumble roller derby team. Her journey comes full-circle as she reconnects with her family and finds her own path in the world. Filled with high-speed action and nonstop fun, the film sports an all-star cast including Golden Globe nominee Drew Barrymore in her feature film directorial debut, Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, Juliette Lewis, Daniel Stern and Jimmy Fallon. The film also features cameo appearances by real life derby girls Rachel Piplica and Kristen Adolfi, better known as “Iron Maiven” and “Krissy Krash” of the Los Angeles Derby Dolls.



My Review:

In my younger years, one of my favorite ways to spend time with my friends was by roller skating. There was nothing like being on four wheels and feeling the wind cut through you as you used your legs to speed through. I still enjoy roller skating on occasion (yes, even as a full grown adult!) and my favorite is when we are allowed to go full speed ahead on the skates. With that said, roller derbies have always interested me. I'd love the pleasure of being a spectator at one someday. It takes lots of guts, strength, and skill.

Being that this movie centered around roller derbies, I was especially interested in watching it. Some movies get you pumped and make you want to enter the world of whatever sport or action they are partaking in. I did not get that feeling while watching the teams compete. I think it's because the music compositions didn't fit well with what was going on.

Other than that, I enjoyed this movie and felt that the plots intertwined well. I watched this movie with my husband and teenage daughter. It is rated PG13 and I feel that it is an appropriate rating. There is some language and behavior in the movie that wouldn't be appropriate for the younger crowd. I have been a fan of Ellen Page since watching her in Juno. Her innocent charm, combined with her sarcasm, make her an actress worthy of watching.

This film was Drew Barrymore's debut into directing. She did a fine job for her first time, with just a few personal criticisms. This movie isn't just about roller derbies. It is also about finding yourself, doing what you enjoy, and keeping relationships with those who matter most. The three of us who watched the movie liked it overall.
