Book Overview:
Little Wolf can hardly wait. Tonight he will howl at the moon to the top of the sky. First, Big Wolf demonstrates traditional howling form: AAAAAAAAAAOOOOOooooooooo. Then it’s Little Wolf’s turn. He’s sure he is ready, but when the big moment comes, something happens. Something unexpected, something wild, something unbe-beep-bop-believable! Sisters Laura McGee Kvasnosky and Kate McGee have created a wonderful story about the importance of doing things your own way and being true to your heart when it swells with wildness and joy.
Some may favor the proper way to howl, but what if you have a song in your heart that needs to come out? A delightful, disarmingly funny tale for little and big wolves everywhere.
My Review:
I have a fascination with wolves and consider them to be one of my favorite animals. I don't want to encounter one in the woods, but I love reading about them and their behaviors. Little Wolf's First Howling is a hardcover book that tells of a young wolf being taught how to properly howl. He is shown proper howling form several times by his father, but can't seem to quite get it right. Father wolf remains encouraging and highlights his little one's other good attributes. Little Wolf tries to howl correctly again and, instead, comes up with a string of syllables that resemble a tune more than a howl. Rather than chastising him for improper howl form, the father wolf joins in on the unique howl.
The words of the book are simple and children can try to imitate the howling sounds that are throughout the pages. The illustrations are done in blue, brown, and other dark colors. The summary of the story is that it's okay to be original and unique.
One person will win a hardcover book copy of Little Wolf's First Howling.

I have seen a wolf, although supposedly we don't have them here. But a forest ranger assured me there are a few. I saw it out running a few years ago.
Never seen a wolf in the wild, but lots of coyotes around this area -- they keep stealing my chickens!
The only time I have ever seen a wolf was at a wildlife sanctuary and there was a grey wolf pack. They were really beautiful.
