Personal Tips For A Safe Fourth of July

Uncle Sam drinkin' a can

How you will be celebrating your Fourth of July this year?  I don't always get off work every year but the stars aligned, and I'll be celebrating with friends on the riverfront.

Whatever you do, please stay safe and take the time to remember what the 4th of July is all about. #Murica

Here are a few general tips on how to have a safe 4th of July:

If you plan on swimming, do not enter the water alone unless a lifeguard is on duty. Most deaths from drowning occur within a few feet of safety.  Diving off a high board might be fun when you're drunk, but it will hurt the next day. #ItReallyWill

West Nile is a threat to some, including those where I live. Wear shoes and socks, long pants, and a long sleeved shirt if you're going to be outdoors where mosquitoes are.

Know what's legal and what's not. It is illegal to have most types of fireworks in Illinois. No need to get yourself in trouble.  Besides, 911 Dispatchers would be thrilled shitless if they didn't have to field umpteen "illegal fireworks" calls.

Don't expect your pets to enjoy the celebration. July 5th is the year's busiest day for animal shelters because most outside pets tend to get the heck out of dodge when the big boom starts going off. It's best to let your outside pets go inside, even to a garage, during the fireworks. It will lessen the scare.

Fourth of July = celebration = alcohol. If you plan on drinking, please have a plan on where you will be staying. Please don't drink and drive. Not only is it dangerous and potentially deadly, it can be expensive. I doubt anyone wants to pay the highly expensive DUI fees. (If you've got that kind of money and want to throw it away, I'll gladly take it off your hands.  And you won't even have to go to court!)

If you make a mess, clean it up. It's not that hard to pick up your trash and put it in a nearby trash can or take it with you and throw it away at a later time. Litter all over the ground, especially after a large event, makes a place look downright trashy. #DontBeThatGuy

Fireworks are F -U -N but remember that they are hazardous as well. Use all safety precautions and procedures when lighting fireworks. Don't stand close to them.  You'll need your hand the next day.

Here's hoping that you and yours have an absolutely wonderful 4th of July!

Have any tips you'd like to add?
What are your plans for 4th of July?

Power of Prayer Thursdays - Week 128

I believe in a God that hears prayers and answers them. I've witnessed the miraculous gift of answered prayer. And, I want to pray for you. I've started weekly Power of Prayer post every Thursday. We are now on week 128.  If you are needing prayer in an area of your life, please leave a comment and I'll commit to pray for your need or request. You can be as general or as specific as you like. Whether it be for healing, salvation, finances, emotions, or another area of life, I'd like to lift it up in prayer.

For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Random Tuesday Thoughts - Back Yards and June Bugs

It's been a few weeks since I've taken part in Random Tuesday Thoughts, so be prepared to be bombed with a lot of randomness.  You've been warmed!  If you'd like to play along, link up at Stacy Uncorked.

Is it sad that I watched two June Bugs doing the dirty before I started on this post?!

Whitney and Logan playing a game of Badminton

It took me almost two years but I came to the realization that I have a big back yard and it needs to be put to use.  I'm too lazy to take care of a pool so I've been purchasing Sports and Games stuff.  Logan got me the volleyball net and a volleyball for Mother's Day.  To mix things up a bit, I also got a Badminton set.

Jason had a friend of his create a Cornhole set.  The guy even put our names on them.  The Realtree brand bags were purchased on Amazon.

To add to it all, I found a custom made Washers set at a yard sale and snagged it up.  So, I'd say there's no shortage of things to keep us entertained.
Remember when I said a few weeks ago that Logan placed 3rd overall in the Bridge the Gap 5K race?  That's pretty impressive considering he competed against hundreds of other runners.  For some reason that I didn't really pay attention to, Logan actually didn't place third.  He got a call that he needed to meet with the organization and return his plaque and medal in lieu of other ones.  He'd actually won 2nd place!  That's good news for Logan.  Not so good for the guy who originally thought he placed second!
The left arm was the worst, but he had it everywhere.

Speaking of Logan, he's been keeping me on my toes lately.  He's so allergic to poison ivy that he contracted it from someone who touched someone with it.  So, we spent a couple weeks doctoring that up.

Then I ended up taking him to the ER a week ago because his right big toe was extremely infected and swollen.  From what, we still don't know.  Doc had to lance the toe and drain it of pus and blood.  I didn't realize Logan was so scared of needles.  I was rubbing his head and holding his hand like he was a pregnant woman in labor.

Not to parents of young'uns:  They grow up and still need their moms.

I put my name in for a drawing at a gas station and ended up winning this Mt. Dew cooler shaped like a bobber.  Haven't used it yet but it looks cool.

Logan and I went to the movies last week and watched Hotel Artemis.  Oh My Gosh!  It is So Good!  I didn't even have intentions of watching the film but I had free tickets and it's the only film that remotely interested me.  I've never been a fan of Jodie Foster but she killed it as an older doctor for criminals.  I'd give her an Academy Award.  I'm totally buying the movie when it comes out on DVD.

Darryl being interviewed by a member of local media

I'm not big into sports and only vaguely knew who Darryl Strawberry was.  I've always known he was some big shot in baseball, but that's it.  Darryl came to our church Father's Day weekend to deliver a sermon and it was powerful.  He went from a life of drugs, cancer and wild ways to now being a part of the preaching circuit.  I don't care who delivers a sermon as long as I get something out of it, but I have to give huge kudos to the guy.  He knocked it out of the field (sports pun intended!)
What's your randomness for the week?
How's your summer going?
Watch any good movies lately?  (Hotel Artemis...hint, hint)

For Eyes: Take a Stylish Approach to Healthy Vision with Free Sunglasses

Their future's so bright they've gotta wear shades.

It’s National Sunglasses Day tomorrow, June 27.  Are you ready to celebrate with style?  Your current shades might make a perfect fashion statement, but will the lenses shield your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet rays?

For Eyes by GrandVision, one of the leaders in optical retail, is helping enhance style and increase vision health this June with tips and advice from its optical expert Dr. Magda Nogueras and special offers for National Sunglasses Day.  At all of the For Eyes locations across the U.S. from June 23, 2018 to June 30, 2018, customers can receive a free pair of sunglasses for themselves and for a friend. No purchase necessary.* Visit to claim your coupon.

Established by The Vision Council, National Sunglasses Day on June 27 serves as an annual reminder to safeguard the eyes before venturing outdoors. Sunglasses are one of the most popular, affordable summer accessories, but having the right sunglasses is critical to protecting vision health from UV rays and summer dangers.  Just as UV and UVB radiation can affect the skin, the sun can be equally damaging to your optical health. Overexposure can lead to cancer of the eyelids, cataracts or macular degeneration.

“Sunglasses are a great way to show your style,” said Dr. Nogueras, Vice President of Professional Services for For Eyes.  “But there’s a lot more to finding the right pair.  You need to have UV protection, whether for children or adults, and the right lens options for your summer activities.  Ultra-violet rays can be very dangerous to your unprotected eyes, ranging from ocular cancer and vision loss.”

The American Optometric Association recommends choosing lenses that block out 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays and screen 75 to 90 percent of visible light. It’s important to match lenses color and keep the surfaces smooth and distortion-free.

Depending on the activity, there are plenty of outdoor options when choosing protective eyewear. Polarized lenses reflect glare. Gray lenses provide proper color recognition. Blue-blocking lenses are a great choice for distinguishing long-distance objects or when boating, hunting or skiing. Photochromic lenses adjust for the amount of light. Wraparound frames can offer a greater defense from UV rays.

For more information on sunglasses style and options, or to find a For Eyes location, visit

*Regular retail price of sunglasses cannot exceed $49. Offer valid while supplies last. Only one pair of sunglasses per customer. To redeem, you must present the coupon in store. See store associate for details. Offer expires 06/30/2018.  Eye exams performed by Independent Doctors of Optometry located in or adjacent to For Eyes locations.*

Will you be visiting a For Eyes location to receive a free pair of sunglasses?

Saving Each Other - #SavingEachOther Book Review and Giveaway

Saving Each Other (Saving Series, Book 1) by Stacy Mitchell
ISBN: 9781974591718 (paperback)
ASIN: B07CLDKKQG (Kindle edition)
Publication Date: May 15, 2018 (re-release date)

Two hearts, two souls. Devastated by loss, united through destiny.

The rules: Communicate only through text messages and never reveal our real names or other personal details.

My name is Ean Montgomery. After the drunk-driving accident that killed my wife, son, and unborn daughter, I was forced to see a grief counselor. In an unconventional move, she gave me a private cell phone and the first initial of the name of a woman who had been widowed by the same accident. I had no intention of ever texting her but with all hope and the will to live gone, I found myself quickly slipping down the rabbit hole. Desperate, lonely, and unbelievably sad, I reached out to her and she became my everything.

Everything is excruciating! Everything is broken!

My name is Dani Adams. I was married to my college sweetheart, the love of my life. Together we were raising our four-year-old daughter and running a successful business. Then the accident happened and life as I knew it ended in the blink of an eye. I didn't want to answer his text but I was barely hanging on by a thread and he was in tremendous pain, so I replied. And once again, my world was forever changed.
I can't lose you, I won't survive…

Over the course of a year, through texting alone, we bond. Friendship blossoms into something deeper. We were never supposed to meet, but fate had other plans, and into this world of loss and despair, something amazing began to grow… But can the passion we've found sustain itself with the deep, soul-twisting pain that never seems to fade?

My Review:

This is the first book that's supposed to be part of a series and, after reading Saving Each Other, I'm excited to see what author, Stacy Mitchell, comes up with in her next books.  Saving Each Other is the first novel for the author but her writing skill and character development is on par with that of seasoned writers.

Saving Each Other is a novel that is told in point-of-view perspective.  Ean and Danielle had near-perfect lives with their own families and were quite content.  Then their worlds came tumbling down and they realized that life can turn at the drop of a dime.  Their grief is insurmountable and both start a form of therapy that entails communicating over phone.  The pair are not to exchange overly personal information, and are there only to provide grief comfort to each other.  That works for a while but, as time passes, they find that they are developing a bond.  Ean and Danielle have life situations that come to pass and, oddly enough, some of them involve each other without them even knowing it.

I've read several books in my time and I couldn't count how many of them I've enjoyed.  But there's very few books that absolutely pull at my emotions and leave me so affected.  There were a couple parts in Saving Each Other where I was actually crying.  I was so sucked in to what the characters were going through.

The ending was a cliffhanger, which I'm not a big fan of.  I don't like being left not knowing the full outcome.  The author needs to hurry up and write the second novel in the series!

Win It!

One person will win a paperback book copy of Saving Each Other.

Diagnostic Tool to Determine Indicators of Strokes

I'm not a doctor (and I don't play one on TV) so don't take what I say as the "know all, end all".  If you're having medical problems, see someone who's properly licensed.  Now that that's out of the way...

As most of us know, time is of the essence when it comes to a stroke.  It is a medical emergency and needs to be treated as early as possible.

I've worked as a 9-1-1 Dispatcher for 13 years and often give callers assessments to determine if the case is a possible stroke.  Sometimes people hesitate or freak out, so they're not sure what exactly is going on.

Here is a Stroke Diagnostic Tool that may be helpful in determining evidence of stroke:

1. Ask the patient to smile.

Was the smile equal on both sides of the mouth?
Normal smile - 0
Slight difference in smile - 1
Only one side of mouth or face shows a smile - 3

2.  Ask the patient to raise both arms above their head.

Was the patient able to do so?
Both arms raised equally - 0
One arm higher than the other - 1
Only one arm raised - 3

3.  Ask the patient to say, "The early bird catches the worm."

Was the patient able to repeat it correctly?
Said correctly - 0
Slurred speech - 3
Garbled or not understandable speech - 3

Add up the scores that are assigned to each answer.
>3 = clear evidence of stroke
2 = strong evidence of stroke
1 = partial evidence of stroke

Using this tool and observing other symptoms such as sudden, severe headache with no known cause and sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes will help determine if this is quite probably a stroke.  Whatever the case may be, be sure to seek immediate professional help if you believe you or a loved one are stroking out.

Do you know anyone who's had a stroke?

The Thrill of the Yard Sale

I don't get to check out yard sales every weekend but I've been finding pretty great deals when I'm able to go.  I've spent a pretty penny lately but have come home with tons of stuff (somewhat to my husband's dismay!)

Here's a sampling of just a few items I've found.  If I took a picture of everything, I'd run out of SIM card space.

I picked up this LOGO game for $1.  I don't think it'd ever been played.  We broke it out on Father's Day and had fun guessing logos, icons, and companies.
P.S. I won.

This portable ping pong set was also a huge hit on Father's Day.  It fits my coffee table perfectly.  Granted, we have to play on our knees.  But that's the price we pay for fun.

This picture doesn't do any justice to the amount of clothes I've purchased.  Then again, I'd be almost embarrassed to show each and every item I bought.  Countless shirts and dresses are now stuffed into my already full closet.  I'm not a stickler for name brand or high fashion but I'm a total clothes whore.

I purchased this pull-out bin, along with another one, to throw miscellaneous items in until I find a forever home for them.

I almost didn't get this mirrored decor piece because my walls are already full.  But, then I remembered I have exactly one bare wall in my whole house and it wasn't fair to that wall to have nothing hanging on it.  The wall is happy now.  So am I.

Do you shop at yard sales or thrift stores?
What's a great bargain you've gotten recently?

Book Overview:

Tuck your little one in with Go to Sleep, Sheep!, a giggle-inducing story that helps convince even the most stubborn bedtime resisters to close their eyes and count a few sheep before bed. Children will love the cuddly cute artwork and sparkly glitter on the barn-shaped cover of this adorable book.

My Review:

I'm almost sure you've heard of "counting sheep" to go to sleep.  Go to Sleep, Sheep! is a cute board book for little ones and it spotlights, well, sheep!   In this sweet rhyming story, Mama sheep tries several times to coax her little ones to Bedtime Barn.  They come up with all sorts of excuses.  She finally gets them to cuddle, say their prayers, and fall asleep.

Young children thrive on routine and rituals, and a story at bedtime is one of the best routines to establish.  This is a bedtime story that parents can read quickly and children can enjoy.

ColorProof Hair Products - Review

With the "fun in the sun" attitude comes the responsibility of using SPF.  At this point, we all know that protecting our skin from the sun is a priority, but it’s equally important to protect your hair from harmful UVA and UVB rays.

Does your current haircare routine contain any SPF? If not, you should consider switching to products that incorporate UVA and UVB protection to avoid a dry scalp, brittle locks, and color damage. ColorProof, a vegan hair care brand who fuses the finest botanicals with advanced technology, has selection of products that can easily be incorporated into your daily mix of products.  I was able to review two products from this hair care line.
Allyson uses the TruCurl Anti-Frizz Oil to keep her curly hair shiny and healthy.

The RadicallySmooth Anti-Frizz Serum instantly provides a smooth finish for long-lasting, frizz-free style with full spectrum UVA/UVB color and heat protection. Featuring Camellia and Abyssinian Oils, this creamy serum will seal hairs' cuticle and provide intense surface smoothing and a silky shine.  I use it on my hair every other day to keep humidity locked out and to keep my hair from feeling so dry.

The TruCurl Anti-Frizz Oil will not only give your curls structure with polymers, sugar cane and seaweed, but also provide long lasting shine and protection from the sun with UVA / UVB protection.  Only a small amount is needed to provide shine and soften curls.  Allyson learned that if she applies too much, her hair will feel greasy.  But, if she uses it as directed and only applies a small amount, it makes her naturally curly hair manageable and looking fantastic.

Fobbles: Portable Fog and Bubble Machine - Review

stock photo

Parties I host usually aren't Pinterest worthy, but I do what I can to make them fun.  I want a guest's experience to be memorable.  Because of that, I have a few things I bring out to keep people entertained.  I recently received Fobbles for review and it's been a hit at my house.  I can't wait to use it during the next party or cookout I host.

Froggy’s Fog, a company that provides the special effect machines/systems to Broadway shows, concerts and amusement parks, is now offering an at-home product to consumers called Fobbles, a new 4-in-1 home unit that provides not only bubbles but fog, haze and fog-filled bubbles. Fobbles takes family fun and party entertainment to the next level and can be enjoyed throughout the year. Fobbles is lightweight, compact and easy to operate. In addition, it delivers water-based, non-toxic (pharmaceutical-grade) fog, haze, bubbles and fog-filled bubbles.  Currently, there is an Indiegogo campaign for Fobbles, which I encourage you to check out.

The Fobbles bubbles are environmentally safe, biodegradable, non-toxic and safe for kids.  There are two models of Fobbles available, Consumer and Professional. I received the former.

A user manual is included with Fobbles and there's also a Youtube video you can watch for instructions.  Maintenance instructions and safety warnings are listed on the  user's manual.

To set up the machine itself, you first need to attach the trigger control cable to the rear of the machine. Then you fill fog fluid reservoir with Froggy's Fog Brand Fog Fluid.  Then you fill the bubble reservoir at the front with Froggy's Fog Max Bubbles.  It is highly recommended that you use Froggy's Fog brand of bubbles and fog fluid to operate the Fobbles machine.

A diagram on the user's manual shows what each button is for and where each compartment is located.  The buttons are also marked on the machine itself, making it easy to see what goes where and what button to push for desired effect.

After plugging in the machine, you need to allow it to warm up and wait for the red light on the remote to become illuminated.  No functions of the machine will operate until the unit has come up to temperature.  There's no indicator that the machine is warming up and it left us wondering, at first, if it was even powered on.  That's the one thing Jason and I agree we'd change about the machine.  It would be nice to have an idea of how long it takes for the Fobbles unit to start working.  There's also no indication of when the unit is almost at the point of needing to be reheated.

There are four functions on the remote switch that activates your desired effect.  There's Fog, Haze, Bubble, and Fog Bubble functions.  That means you get four fun effects!  All of them are exciting to watch and it's definitely entertaining to see the fog, bubbles, and haze spew forth.  Our favorite function, and one that we've not seen before, is the Fog Bubbles.  A haze of fog comes out, along with lots of bubbles.  When the bubbles pop, it looks like a small cloud of smoke bursting out of them.

Fobbles is lightweight and portable, so we can take it anywhere there's an electric outlet nearby.  Fobbles adds an amazing element to any event or party.
