Racing to the Finish: My Story - Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

It was a seemingly minor crash at Michigan International Speedway in June 2016 that ended the day early for Dale Earnhardt Jr. What he didn’t know was that it would also end his driving for the year. He’d dealt with concussions before, but concussions are like snowflakes, no two are the same. And recovery can be brutal, and lengthy.

When NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. retired from professional stock car racing in 2017, he walked away from his career as a healthy man. But for years, he had worried that the worsening effects of multiple racing-related concussions would end not only his time on the track but his ability to live a full and happy life.

Torn between a race-at-all-costs culture and the fear that something was terribly wrong, Earnhardt tried to pretend that everything was fine, but the private notes about his escalating symptoms that he kept on his phone reveal a vicious cycle: suffering injuries on Sunday, struggling through the week, then recovering in time to race again the following weekend. For the first time, he shares these notes and fully reveals the physical and emotional struggles he faced as he fought to close out his career on his own terms.

In this candid reflection, Earnhardt opens up about his frustration with the slow recovery, his admiration for the woman who stood by him through it all, and his determination to share his own experience so that others don’t have to suffer in silence. Steering his way to the final checkered flag of his storied career proved to be the most challenging race and most rewarding finish of his life.

My Review:

I don't consider myself a huge NASCAR fan but know enough about the sport.  My husband used to be big into watching the races, so he educated me on the more popular drivers and how the sport works.  Of course, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was - and is - one of the most popular drivers to ever race.

Racing to the Finish: My Story largely tells of why Earnhardt Jr. retired in 2017 and of the struggles with his medical issues that started several years before.  Although readers will get a view of Dale's race career, that's not what the overall book is about.  It's more about how Dale suffered numerous concussions and what he went through during those years.  Included are personal notes written by Dale, leaving clues of what was going on.  Told in his own account, Dale is raw and real with how he felt, both mentally and physically, about his brain trauma.  Fans of Dale will especially like how he is transparent and tells both the good and bad side of NASCAR in regards to head trauma.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants to bring attention and light to concussions and head injuries.  He does it best by giving readers a real, personal look at what he's went through.  Included within the story are several full-color photographs showing Dale's personal and professional life.

Win It!

One person will win a hardcover book copy of Racing to the Finish: My Story.

Celebrating National Cookbook Month with Keystone Meats

Although it's the last day for it, October is known as National Cookbook Month.  I personally have a collection of about ten cookbooks.  I also have a folder of recipes that I've printed out.

Buffalo Chicken Dip is a recipe that I make often for parties and events.  Paired with crackers, vegetables or tortilla chips, it makes a hearty appetizer.  And, usually, there's none left to take home!
Buffalo Chicken dip ingredients

1 can Keystone All Natural Chicken

1 (8 oz. pkg.) cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup hot sauce

1/2 cup blue cheese or ranch dressing

1/2 cup shredded cheese

PREHEAT oven to 350°F.

COMBINE all ingredients and spoon into shallow 1-quart baking dish. BAKE 20 minutes or until mixture is heated through; stir. Garnish with chopped green onions or crumbled bacon bits if desired.

bowl of Buffalo Chicken Dip served with tortilla chips

Last year I was introduced to Keystone Meats, and they've been celebrating National Cookbook Month all month long.  The company has been in business since 1964 and they are known for their canned meats and soup bases.  You can substitute Keystone Meats into any of your recipes that call for cooked chicken, cubed beef, pork, turkey, or ground beef.

There are a few reasons why I like Keystone Meats.  It is delicious and there's plenty of it in a can.  The canned meat is convenient because the meat is already cooked, and all I have to do is shred it up with a fork and heat it.  There's no long process of cooking.

Jason experimented with the Keystone All Natural Beef the other day and made a Beef and Noodle Soup.  It was super delicious!

How many cookbooks do you own?
Have you ever tried Keystone Meats?

Random Tuesday Thoughts - Deer and Casseroles

Say hello to Tuesday by linking up at Stacy Uncorked and posting all your randomness.  Grandpuppy, Diamond, says so.
me and Shelby - never mind the creepy zombie baby

I spent both Friday and Saturday evening going to all the local haunted houses and haunted trails.  Went home Friday night and had the absolute worst nightmares.  I don't get scared going through them but my nightmares more than made up for it. But it didn't stop me from going again Saturday.

Traci and Shelby

My sister played her part again in the Whispering Oaks Haunted Forest.  I'm not sure but I think she was going for the dead female version of Slash.

Jason finally got his first kill of the year.  He got an 8-point buck with a crossbow.  It's actually his first kill ever.  He didn't start hunting until last year.  The antlers are already mounted on our wall.

Speaking of Jason, he had a little oopsie with the grinder yesterday.  He was underneath a truck trying to grind off an exhaust.  The grinder slipped and went a little crazy.  Miracle it wasn't worse than it was.  Jesus took the wheel on that one!
As part of fundraising efforts, Logan's Track and Cross Country Team has been going to Indiana every weekend.  It's a six hour drive up and six hours back.  They don't spend the night, so it makes for a long day.  A charter bus picks them up and takes them to do security at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish college football games.  To keep anonymity, Logan goes by the name of Sergio (with a name tag and all).  On the plus side, he gets to watch the games.

A couple weekends ago, Garth Brooks played two concerts in Indiana.  Logan Sergio was security for a VIP section so he got to see the concerts for free.

Everyone left home super early Saturday morning and I was hangry.  So I made Green Bean Tuna Casserole for the win.  Breakfast of champions!!

How's your week been?

Baby Bear's Adoption - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

One winter day, Braden and Finley hike into the woods with their wildlife scientist dad and his team to tag a mamma bear who just had cubs. The tag makes it easy to find the mamma bear in the summer when the team gets a call about an orphaned bear cub that needs a new family. But will the mama bear adopt this new cub as one of her own? The story is based on orphaned black bear cub rescue efforts by Michigan DNR.

My Review:

I'm always excited when Arbordale Publishing releases new books each season.  The company has recently released four new books, with Baby Bear's Adoption being one of them.

A fictional story based on true events, Baby Bear's Adoption tells of two children who go on a snowshoe hike with their father one wintry day.  They happen upon a bear den, and the father figure (who is a wildlife biologist) explains bear behavior and how they track bears by outfitting them with collars.

While exploring the den, they realize that there's a mother bear with her two babies.  Illustrations show biologists checking the health of the mother.  They then leave the animals alone and go back about their business.  Then summer comes around and the father gets a call of a baby cub in distress.  The ensuing story tells of how the cub is rescued and becomes adopted by the mother bear they had encountered earlier that winter.  It's an interesting story, told in first-person form, of one of the many benefits of tracking bears.

The "For Creative Minds" section in the back of the book further educates readers with the Black Bear Life Cycle, Stages of Bear Hibernation, Furry Fun Facts, and Q&A with Bear Biologist, Mark Boersen.  If your child is even the least interested in bears, they'll definitely be interested in this book!

Baby Bear's Adoption is a Fall 2018 release from Arbordale Publishing.

Win It!

The Greatest Football Teams of All Time - Sports Illustrated Kids Books Review

Book Overview:

Perfectly timed for football season, and a super fun & informative read for middle grade football enthusiasts, The Greatest Football Teams of All Times kicks off the start of a brand-new series for SI Kids, covering the various G.O.A.T.'s in various sports.

This first book in a new series delivers all the deep background on the greatest teams to take the field. Whether it’s single-season teams, great teams era by era, or ultimate fantasy teams, readers will get an in-depth experience in football G.O.A.T.s - Greatest of All Time - with this all-new and unique view of America's favorite sport.

My Review:

I'll be the first to admit I don't know much about football.  Even with my very basic knowledge, I do have a favorite football team - Dallas Cowboys!  If your child is a fan of the sport and wants to know more about individual teams and players (or even if you do), then I recommend The Greatest Football Teams of All Time hardcover book.

Loaded with pictures, stats and information, this book spans across the years and talks about some of the best professional and college teams to ever play.  There's also loads of fun facts, insider stories, strategies, and player profiles.  It's a pretty impressive sports book.

Who is your favorite football team?

Hoyle Kids Cards - Card Games Review

I'm a big proponent for games.  Whether it be a family game night or a two friends playing together, I feel games promote a lot of life skills.  Hoyle Kids Games are a good fit for young children.  All of Hoyle’s card games are designed to be both fun and educational. Each game teaches a different set of practical skills such as addition and subtraction, sequence building and numeral identification, while promoting emotional intelligence, self-awareness and empathy.

Two newer games from Hoyle Kids Games is Monkey, May I? and Super Me!, both of which I had the opportunity to review.  Both are appropriate for kids ages 4 to 6.

The Monkey, May I? card game helps reinforce your children's social skills like making good choices, self awareness and self control.  Children flip over an Action card, make a good choice, and collect Monkey Money.  The child with the most money at the end wins the game.

Contents include:
26 GREEN "Monkey Action" cards
15 YELLOW "Monkey, MayI?" cards
15 RED "Stop & Think" cards
150 "Monkey Money" cards

The Super Me! card game is as equally easy to play.  Children flip over an Emergency! card, then match the situation to the emergency.  It engages them in learning how to help in a situation and be empathetic.  For instance, a card may depict a female struggling to carry all her groceries.  The child would match it up with the card of the superhero helping her carry the groceries.

Contents include:
24 RED "SUPER ME!" cards

Disney's ANT-MAN AND THE WASP - Blu-ray Review

Movie Overview:

In “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” Scott Lang is grappling with the consequences of his choices, as both the Super Hero Ant-Man and a father, in the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War.” As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission to rescue Janet van Dyne from the Quantum Realm. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp, all while attempting to serve house arrest, assist fast talking-Luis (Michael Peña) and the X-con Security crew, and thwart the efforts of a new adversary called Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and her ally Bill Foster (Laurence Fishburne).

Exclusive extras provide an inside look at some of Marvel Comics’ most celebrated characters and the consummate, comedic actors who portray them in “Ant-Man and The Wasp.” Featurettes spotlight Paul Rudd, who returns as good-hearted thief turned hero, Scott Lang, and delivers big laughs both on set and in theaters; Evangeline Lilly, who transforms into The Wasp, the first female character to be featured in the title treatment of a Marvel Studios film; and iconic actors Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer as super couple Hank and Janet Van Dyne.  Viewers can explore more about the visual development artists and effects used to bring the characters to life and drastically alter the size of the Super Heroes and their surroundings. Additional extras include deleted scenes, bloopers, outtakes, and audio commentary by “Ant-Man” franchise director Peyton Reed.

My Review (contains spoilers):

Ant-Man and The Wasp is the second movie going off of the first Ant-Man movie. At the end of the first movie Ant Man, we see that Dr. Hank Pym has made a wasp suit for his daughter, Hope.  When we see this unfold at the end of credits scene, it gets the Marvel fans wondering what is going to happen in the next movie.  This is where us Marvel fans FINALLY get to see if our predictions came true or even close to coming true. The start of the movie has Scott (Ant-Man) playing with his daughter Cassie at his place; having been on house arrest for three years. This was due from the “stunt he played with Captain America” during Civil War.

Everything seems to go fine and Scott’s probation is about up, but all of a sudden he gets a quantum theory flashback. Since this was a quantum flashback, he tries getting a hold of Hope and Dr.Pym by calling them off a disposable phone, which he thought didn’t happen. All of a sudden he gets smacked with something on his neck and passes out. When he wakes up from passing out, he is in a small downsized car with Hope driving to the Pym’s Lab.

After meeting up with Dr. Pym, they think it’s possible to bring back his wife. Making a plan, Hope, Scott, and Pym need an extra piece of equipment in order to fire up their machine. While trying to make a black market deal, they come in contact with Ghost. A woman who was trained in stealth by S.H.I.E.L.D., almost like a weapon. Trying to fight her was almost impossible because she faded out too much, not allowing the Wasp or Ant-Man hit her. She, in the end of the fight, was able to take Dr.Pym’s lab and the component for the machine.

Going forward, they ended up finding the lab and started the quantum machine up; but only with the help of Pym’s wife Janet. She gave all the solutions to their problems in order to start up the machine, by using Scott as an antenna. While in the quantum realm, Pym find his wife and are able to bring her back. In the meantime, Ant-Man and The Wasp have to fight off the Ghost before she kills her mother. It’s all for good intentions because she also doesn’t want to die. In the end, Janet was able to heal the Ghost because she had evolutionized while in the quantum realm.

In the end credit scenes, we see Scott trying to capture quantum energy.  He gets the energy, then asks to be brought back, but the signal goes static. The audience then sees Janet, Pym, and Hope fade. The last time we saw this happen was in Avengers Infinity War Having seen this, we can piece together why Ant-Man might be in the next movie. That is all for the director to decide, but it also leaves us with so many questions. Who will find out where Ant-Man is at? Who will get him out? What happened to his family? Will he be in the next movie?

This is an action-packed film with a plot that is better understood by those who have seen Ant-Man and Avengers Civil War. I'm excited to see if Ant-Man will be in the next MARVELS movie.

Ant-Man & The Wasp is available now for digital download now, and on 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ and Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD™

Wordful Wednesday - Haunted Trail

It's been quite a while since I've spent the night at Whispering Oaks Campground.  It was me and Jason's stomping grounds for several years but we gave it up.  I love all things Halloween, though, and couldn't resist the opportunity to take part in their haunted trail on Saturday.

Me doing my part

My sister organized the event and did most of the props.  I dressed up but didn't set out to scare anyone.  I was more of a "socializer".  I did take a ride through the grounds once to see what the haunted trail was all about.  It could've used a few more scares but wasn't bad overall.

some family who braved the trail on the hay rack tractor ride

Can you guess which one of these is my sister?
(hint: it's the crazy one)

Lotus Trolley Bag - Review and Giveaway

The average American family uses approximately 1,500 wasteful plastic bags in the U.S. each year.  I'm a part of the guilty party.  I'm good about recycling cardboard and paper, but not so good at finding a way to make a dent with plastic bags.  That is, until I found out about the Lotus Trolley Bag.

Created by a husband and wife duo in California (where plastic bags are now banned), the Lotus Trolley Bag is an environmentally friendly shopping bag system.  These bags save steps—time and energy - all the while eliminating millions of wasteful, harmful plastic bags from our environment.

I've received a ton of merchandise on my blog to review throughout the years, with some of them being at the top of the list as highly recommended.  The Lotus Trolley Bag has made it to the top of the list, and I definitely recommend it.  Seriously, go buy one for yourself and tons as gifts for others.

The Lotus Trolley Bag is a set of four bags that can be rolled into one carrying case.  Each bag can hold up to 50 pounds and is made with high quality double stitching.  Each bag has velcro on the sides and covered poles on both sides.

You can take the Lotus Trolley Bag with you when grocery shopping to eliminate the use for plastic bags.  When rolled up, it is lightweight and easy to carry.  A velcro closure at the handle allows you to hang it at the front of your shopping cart until you're ready to bag groceries, or you can go ahead and spread the bags out onto the shopping cart and allow them to hang from the rods.  The bags fit most grocery outlet shopping carts.  When you are finished shopping and ready to put the bags in your cart, just separate each one from the other's velcro and set them in your vehicle.

The light blue bag is insulated, providing 2 to 4 hours of keeping your food cold.  Another bag has a mesh bottom to aerate foods.  One of the bags even has inside pockets to hold wine and eggs.  Although I didn't take a picture of these bags on a shopping cart or with food in them, I can personally say that they are durable and hold lots of grocery items.  I love how well this bagging system works and that I don't  have to run immediately home with cold foods because one of the bags is insulated.

The poles on each bag are removable, and you have the option to take just one bag to the store with you if you want.  There's times when I need to take cold drinks to an event and I can use the insulated bag for just that purpose.  There's also times when I might want to just grab a few items from the store or want to take some food over to a friend's house.  I have the option to do that with these bags.

Although I haven't tried it yet, the company advises three of the bags are machine washable.  The insulated bag can be wiped down with a cloth.

Love, love, love the Lotus Trolley Bag!

Win It!

PUR attitude Wild Durian Fruit Peel - Skincare Product Review

In December 2017 I was introduced to PUR attitude, a skincare line that's dermatologist tested and approved, backed by independent clinical studies, and follows the brand’s standards for “Safe Beauty".  PUR attitude products contain only safe beauty ingredients and are not diluted with water.  I had a "love, hate" relationship with the products I reviewed in December.  Recently I was able to try the Wild Durian Fruit Peel.

Wild Durian Fruit Peel is formulated to visibly even out skin tones, wipe away fine lines, and restore vitality and brightness for more youthful looking skin. Due to the activation of rare wild durian fruit, known for its pungent aroma and revered for its advanced anti-aging properties, this product is able to produce these powerful results on the skin without irritation. Wild Durian Fruit Peel is enhanced with the power of natural Hyaluronix™ technology, which delivers up to one thousand times its weight in water, binding moisture deeply into the skin. These natural ingredients are combined with pure glucosamine, ceramides, as well as extracts of orange, apple, and green tea to detoxify impurities, exfoliate lifeless skin, and unclog pores.

I'd never heard of the wild durian fruit until receiving the Wild Durian Fruit Peel, so I did some Internet research to find out its description and uses.  Pretty interesting, actually!

I feel like the name of the product is a little misleading.  It's not an actual facial mask that peels off but rather more like a serum to be applied to the face after it's been cleansed.  Other than that, I have no qualms with the product itself.  I don't believe any product can completely reverse the signs of aging but there are some out there that I've found to be beneficial in giving my skin a more youthful, radiant look.  Wild Durian Fruit Peel makes my face feel and look brighter, as well as almost diminish the visible fine lines around my eyes.  It's become a part of my beauty ritual that makes my skin feel good and gives it a nice gleam.

During the month of October, Pur attitude will donate $25 for each Wild Durian Fruit Peel sold to National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® (NBCF). NBCF is an organization dedicated as much to the prevention of the disease, as it is to the cure, and holds excellent ratings with independent charity reviewers. PUR attitude chose to work with NBCF due to its alignment with PUR attitude’s own core mission to carry out responsible industry practices by providing carcinogen-free skincare.

There's only a few days left in October so now would be the time to order the Limited Edition Wild Durian Fruit Peel.

Random Tuesday Thoughts - Workouts and Haunted Trails

It's Tuesday, which means it's time for another edition of Random Tuesday Thoughts, hosted by Stacy Uncorked.  Grandkitty, Lola, would love for you to participate.

Sweaty selfie with Allyson, Shelby, Kim, Alexis, and myself

It's been six weeks now and I'm still faithfully going to workout class every Monday evening.  I'm not particularly losing weight but feel much better in the strength and endurance departments.  If the class offered a referral program, I'd be at the top of the game.  I've gotten four other girls to sign up after me.

This meme describes me to a T!

scarecrow face on my front door

Allyson and I spent Sunday afternoon at the Hannibal, MO Folklife Festival.  It was an open market of pottery, jewelry, paintings, wood carvings, crafts, and local foods.  I ended up purchasing the scarecrow face pictured above, along with a couple other things.  I only brought a debit card which was a blessing in disguise.  Some booths didn't take card.  I was ready to spend, spend, spend but got shut down.

My brother is a year and a half younger than me.  He's tatted head to toe and looks kinda rough.  He has no filter and a tough exterior.  He's actually a really good guy but doesn't get sappy very often.  So, I was almost brought to tears when he posted this on FB:

"Had a talk with my daughter today about appreciating people and letting them know they are awesome.
So figured id throw this out there.
I had 3 amazing women help me with this lesson through my life now.
And i want to say to Nancy Hoos, Terra Heck and Traci Kelley thank you for all raising me to be the man i am and leading me to find way here. Through my roughneck shit as a kid, through the busted faces and broken hearts. Through jail and a needle you were always there for me. Thank you for keeping me alive long enough to enjoy my queen and our beautiful angels. I love you all so much."

My heart melted.

Just wanted to share this pic of my husband (on the right) doing his thing at church.  He looks good in red ;)

This is no joke, all good blog posts come to me when I lay down to sleep.  I can craft an amazing post in no time.  Crap part is, the computer is in my teenage son's room.  He'd have a conniption if I ran to his room every time a great post came to mind.

me and MaKynzee

Me and Jason went through a haunted trail in Palmyra, MO Friday evening.  He's not a fan of the things because a lot of them are kinda lame.  Even he was impressed with this one.  If you're anywhere near the area, GO!

Saturday evening I dressed up and took part in a haunted trail at Whispering Oaks Campground.  It's my old stompin' grounds from when I was camping every weekend.  It was colder than a witch's tit, but I had a good time catching up with old friends and even taking a ride on the tractor myself.  My great-niece was a wee bit scared till I agreed to ride along and keep her safe.
What's your randomness for the week?
Been to any haunted houses or Halloween activities?
