As the holidays approach, hosts everywhere are preparing menus and decorations to achieve festive and - lets be real - Instagram-worthy gatherings guests will rave about until next year. But amidst the food and frill, how do you ensure the FUN?! That's where What's That Smell?™ comes in: an Amazon Top 100 game challenging those brave enough to guess scents ranging from roses to rotting garbage and everything in between. Hosts won't have to worry about pleasing older or younger guests because everyone can play at once without the awkward moments other games may cause.
I enjoy playing games with my family, and we've had a blast with What's That Smell? If you think your nose knows, put it to the test. Use your sense of smell to test your nostrils through each round.
What's That Smell? is for 2 to 6 players, ages 14+. Contents of the game include:
1 scorepad
48 Mystery Whiff Cards
1 sheet of Whiff Strips
6 cardholders
4 Stank Cards
4 resealable bags
Bacon, Pine, Vanilla, and Peach are much better smells than some that are on the cards.
To play the game, one person is elected as the StinkPin who acts as master of ceremony throughout the game and tallies the scores at the end of the round. The StinkPin also selects the number of Mystery Whiff Cards in play and a sniffing time of 30, 45, or 60 seconds.
Each player should have a cardholder, a scorecard and a whiff strip. They should also take a Mystery Whiff Card and open it to release the scent but not to where they can see the answer. The timer is then started and each player gives their Mystery Whiff card a good sniff. It is then up to the player to decide what the smell might be and what category is belongs in. Then write down the funniest memory or association of what the smell triggers. The game is done when all of the players have smelled all the cards.
The StinkPin gathers all of the cards and reveals the answers. Players count their points as follows:
Smell Guess - You get 5 points if you guess the top answer and 3 points for the second and third answers.
Smell Category - You get 1 point if you choose the correct category (even if your smell guess is wrong). There are seven categories of scents with some including Tutty Fruity, Just Plain Stinky, and All Things Chemical.
Smell Association - The group votes on whose smell memory is the funniest and that player gets 2 points.
The person who won the round picks a player of their choice to take 3 big whiffs of an outrageously stinky Stank Card. The Whiff of Shame cards include Hot Chunky Vomit, Diaper Blowout, Extra Old Toe Cheese, and Smothered in B.O. Trust me, none of them smell good!
Although we haven't used it yet, there's also a What's That Smell? app that can be downloaded. The app keeps time and players get extra points for top answers on the app. You can also use the app for the ReekCam to record the person sniffing a Whiff of Shame card.
It is important to just lightly brush the Mystery Whiff Cards, rather than scratching them roughly. It doesn't make the scent any stronger if you scratch hard. Rather, it will just take some of the scent off the card. The four resealable bags are for the Whiff of Shame cards and those cards should be put in the bags when not in use.
Don't use a weak stomach as an excuse not to play this game! The fun that comes from it is worth taking the risk - Will you end up smelling a flower or a fart?!
Win It!
One person will win a What's That Smell? game.
