Breakthrough - Blu-ray Review

Rated: PG
Studio: 20th Century Fox
DVD Release Date: July 16, 2019

Film Overview:

BREAKTHROUGH is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son, John, falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven) and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own book, BREAKTHROUGH is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.

My Review:

When I first saw previews for Breakthrough playing in theaters, I made it clear I would not watch it with others in public.  I knew, almost without a doubt, that I'd be a crying mess and I didn't want complete strangers watching me snot all over myself.  Now that I've seen the movie on Blu-ray in the comfort of my home, I'm glad I watched it alone with a box of Kleenex.

Breakthrough is one of the better Christian films, in my opinion.  It tells of a couple whose adopted son falls through a lake.  Although he gets rescued, the prognosis for recovery is not good.  The parents, especially Joyce, use a strong dose of faith and a lot of prayer for their son.  It goes to show that miracles can, and do happen.  In addition to being a movie about faith in God, this is also a movie about a mother's devout devotion to being an advocate for her son.  She does not let doctors or nurses talk negatively in front of her son, even though he is unable to respond to them.  She works tirelessly to have the best care given to her son, John.

Breakthrough is a movie of inspiration, devotion, faith, and love.
