My Pinterest Work From Back in the Day

Brace yourself!  If you consider yourself crafty, you may feel upstaged by what I'm about to show you.

1st grade

I don't normally show off my creative side but, when I do, it's pretty darn amazing.  I've had the crafting gene since birth.  Looking through old paper projects confirms that this girl's got some mad skills.

4th grade

It's been a few years since I've broke out the artistry side of myself but I think it's because I'd be afraid of all the power I'd unleash.

7th grade

Do you consider yourself as full of yourself crafty as me?

Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle Now Available on Blu-ray

I watched the original Charlie's Angels movie in 2000 and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle when it premiered in 2003.  Although I like the second one a smidgen better, I am a fan of the "Angels" and the fact that they're pretty bad-ass.

Now Charlie's Angels is available on 4K Ultra HD and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle is available on Blu-ray! Both films include an all-new sneak peek of Charlie's Angels (2019) and hours of archival special features.  I received the Blu-ray of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and was happy to watch it again.

 CHARLIE’S ANGELS (2000)

Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu star as the captivating crime-fighting trio who are masters of disguise, espionage and martial arts. When a devious mastermind embroils them in a plot to destroy individual privacy, the Angels, aided by their loyal sidekick Bosley (Bill Murray), set out to bring down the bad guys. But when a terrible secret is revealed, it makes the Angels targets for assassination.

CHARLIE’S ANGELS: FULL THROTTLE

The "Angels", three investigative agents (Barrymore, Diaz and Liu) who work for the Charles Townsend Detective Agency, return for another high-octane series of adventures as they investigate the theft of a database of witness protection profiles, after five of the people on the list are murdered. They're aided by a new Bosley (Bernie Mac), in an adventure which pits them against a "fallen angel" (Moore), their old nemesis, the Thin Man (Glover), and others.

My Life Lately - Hunters and Homecomings

Other than talking about my new fur baby, it's been a bit since I've talked about what's going on in my life.  Not that it's uber interesting, but here's what we've been up to:

Jason and I purchased a new (to us) 2016 Chevy Silverado.  Minus the payments, I like everything about it.  I traded in my Chevy Trailblazer that I drove for over nine years.  It was a trusty vehicle, but it was time for an upgrade.  This truck's got the bells and whistles, which I'm not used to, so I've been learning which button and screen works for what.
-----------------------------------

Emma went to her last Homecoming dance with her boyfriend of one year.  She's a senior in high school so these memories are especially bittersweet right now.
-----------------------------------

QHS Marching Band

Speaking of Homecoming, I've lived in Quincy for over 18 years now and this is the first year I've went to their high school parade.  None of our kids have attended QHS so it's never been a big thing.  I ended up going with a friend for this one.  The school spirit was fun to watch.
----------------------------

Jason and I celebrated our 17th year wedding anniversary on October 4th.  This is the first year we didn't really do anything for or with each other.  He ended up spending the night in the woods hunting and I spent the night with a girl friend.

Jason and Harley

I'm pretty much a hunting widow for now.  Jason's gone on the weekends trying to get a big buck.  He took my 3 year old great-nephew out last Sunday for the first time.  Harley was proud to say he "scared away a deer".  He still hasn't quite got the hang of how it all works!
------------------------

I reached my first financial goal towards my mission trip to Cambodia in March.  It's been busy with fundraisers and yard sales.  I'm taking the month of October off, then going to get back into making the other half of money needed.
----------------------------
What have you been up to?

The Forest in the Trees - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

It’s common knowledge that coast redwoods are tall, tall trees. In fact, they are the tallest trees in the world. What most people don’t know is that there is a whole other forest growing high in the canopy of a redwood forest. This adaptation of The House That Jack Built climbs into this secret, hidden habitat full of all kinds of plants and animals that call this forest home.

Written by Connie McLennan
32 pg, 8.5 x 10, Ages 3-8

My Review:

If you're at all familiar with The House That Jack Built, you know it is a cumulative tale that builds upon itself with repetition.  The Forest in the Trees is a book similar to that.  Using the same cumulative format, The Forest in the Trees starts out describing redwoods and goes into the creatures and edibles that can be found there.  So, each page builds upon the next.

Within the sidelines of each page are interesting facts about the coast redwoods, and the animals and plants found on them.  For instance, readers will learn that salamanders breathe through their skin and mouths instead of lungs.  They'll also learn that lichens are two organisms growing together, among other information.

The "For Creative Minds" section at the back of the book further teaches lessons on coast redwood habitats, redwood forest vocabulary words, animals and their basic needs, and how new coast redwood trees are reproduced.

The Forest in the Trees is a Fall 2019 release from Arbordale Publishing.

Green Bean's Quirks and Qualms

As many of you know, I got a new kitten a few weeks ago.  I was smitten from day one, and Green Bean has quickly taken up a lot of space in my camera roll.

Green Bean went to the vet the other day and weighs a whole 1.9 pounds.  Kind of a side note, but I had no idea that kitties could be tested for leukemia and HIV.  Vets draw blood and have results within minutes (for an extra fee, of course).  My guy is negative on both counts.

such a big yawn from a little guy

Green Bean loves to terrorize the other two cats, Misty and Trader Jimmy.  They're lazy laid back so they weren't sure what to think about all the energy at first.  Green Bean will chase them around the house and LOVES latching on to their tails.  Trader has gotten accustomed to it but Misty isn't a big fan.

MaKynzee says she comes over to visit me but I think she really just wants to see the cat.

Call me a crazy cat lady but I get easily amused by watching Green Bean run around the house.  He definitely keeps me entertained.

Green Bean loves to climb on my arm when I'm trying to type at the computer.  It's all good and well but complicates the whole typing process.  He loves to be held...on his time.  In actuality, I'm sure I like to hold him more than he likes.

Pick a Pumpkin - Children's Book Review

Pick a Pumpkin
By Patricia Toht, illustrated by Jarvis

9781536207644 | Ages 3 to 7

Pick a pumpkin from the patch. Tall and lean or short and fat. Vivid orange, ghostly white, or speckled green, might be just right.

Pairing a wonderfully rhythmic read-aloud text with expressive retro illustrations, author Patricia Toht and illustrator Jarvis capture all the excitement and familial feeling of a favorite holiday tradition. Readers will be happy to follow along with each step, from picking out the perfect specimen at the pumpkin patch (be sure to stop for cider and toffee apples) to carting it home, scooping out the insides, carving a scary face, and finally lighting a candle inside—savoring the familiar ritual of transforming an ordinary pumpkin into a one-of-a-kind glowing jack-o’-lantern.

The creators of Pick a Pine Tree are back with a joyful, energetic celebration of a Halloween tradition.

My Review:

Autumn is my favorite season of the year for several reasons, with one of them being about the experience of going to a pumpkin patch and another being about Halloween.  This book combines the two.

A hardcover book with a short story told in rhythmic form, Pick a Pumpkin tells of going from picking out a pumpkin at a patch and inviting a pumpkin carving crew to gathering supplies and creating a jack-o-lantern.

I really like the way this tale is worded.  It's catchy and there are a variety of adjectives used to describe pumpkins and other things.  It's a perfect book to read with your youngster to get in the Halloween spirit!

Retweet to Support Veterans this Veterans Day

This Veterans Day, Fisher House Foundation and Suave will anniversary their partnership to further the incredible work Fisher House does in providing a ‘home away from home’ where military and veterans’ families can stay together, at no cost, while a loved one is in a hospital.

In addition to donating $1 million to Fisher House, Suave is taking to Twitter through Veterans Day (11/11) to give people across the country a way to get involved online by driving donations to the organization’s Hero Miles program, which provides free airline tickets for service members and their families to stay together during medical treatment.

For every retweet received on this kick-off post, Suave will donate 100 airline miles to the Hero Miles program, with a goal of donating 1 million air miles to military families through 10K total retweets.

If you have Twitter, take just a few seconds to retweet the post from Suave.  It's a quick and easy way to help those who help us. (And, yes, I practiced what I'm preaching.  I've already retweeted.)

My Home Halloween Decor

I wouldn't say I'm the "Griswald" of Halloween but I do like to decorate for the occasion.  Autumn is my favorite season and I've always been a fan of Halloween.  Here are a few knick-knacks and such I put out for such occasion:

on front door

top of entertainment center

bought the boot at a thrift store and the skeleton bird at Dollar Tree

a scarecrow face that hangs at my side door
I purchased it at a craft fair last year.

The creepy doll was a gift from my sister.

My husband and I made this Halloween decoration out of items I purchased at Dollar Tree.
We used zip-ties to attach the two wire baskets together.

another hanging decoration I created from Dollar Tree supplies

I purchased the wooden sign at a yard sale and the filler from the vase is from Dollar Tree.

Do you decorate for Halloween or Fall?
Do you tend to gravitate towards scary decor or more cutesy stuff?

Henrietta Hen In Trouble Again - Children's Book Review and Giveaway

Book Overview:

Henrietta Hen and Dotty Donkey are best friends. They love going on adventures together! On this particular day, Dotty Donkey suggests they go berry picking but they run into some trouble on the way...will their friends come to their rescue?

This book uses personality and wit to explore friendships and kindness to others. It also promotes sharing.

"There's a whole host of characters that immerse children deep into the story, so they can learn and play," explains the author. "Just to mention some of them, there's the firefly-loving Frog, Stinky Pinky Pig who is looking for her wig and Mousey Mouse, who lives at the Well House. And we can't forget Fakey Fox, Henrietta's always-hungry arch nemesis."

Continuing, "This project is also deeply personal for me, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to Demelza (https://www.demelza.org.uk/about-us) – an amazing local charity who provide vital support to terminally ill children and their families. There's no better fundraising vehicle than a book that's just plain old good fun. I hope to make a difference to the great work they do."

My Review:

A children's book with a flair for words, Henrietta Hen In Trouble Again tells of a hen and a donkey who go on a journey to find some berries.  Donkey is a little on the goofy side and Henrietta is loud.  The pair encounter upon other animals along the way.  Most are quite friendly but a fox tries to spoil their trip.  A bear comes to their rescue, so Henrietta and Dotty Donkey celebrate by sharing their berries with the animal friends who they had encountered.

This is a whimsical, short book that illustrates encounters between animals and how sharing your bounty is a kind thing to do.  I don't think the book title quite goes with the story itself but, other than that, I think it's an entertaining tale.

Labor Day Weekend Camping at Woodyz Acres

lake for fishing

soaking up the sun

So, I'm a few days late.  Okay, a lot of days late.  But I'm gonna post my camping pics anyway.

Labor Day weekend, Jason and I took our little pop-up and spent the weekend at Woodyz Acres in Missouri.  We were joined by some friends who had their own camper.

Won a free night stay playing Bingo

Woodyz Acres used to be Injun Joe back in the day.  The place was hoppin'.  Then something happened and it all went to the crapper.  The new owners have renamed the place and have been hard at work getting it back to a quality campground.

Over Labor Day weekend, we cooked shark steak and beef stew over the fire, grilled lots of food, ate at a potluck with a bunch of other campers, watched movies, played Bingo, fished, and played putt-putt golf.

carry-in potluck lunch

Somehow I got Jason to wear coral shorts!

I'm pretty impressed with the way the campground's starting to look and it's become one of my new fave places to hang.
